Exactly. The coaching staff actually got a "hand" on these kids. You could call it a "test drive". Ultimately, only time will tell.

You know what is funny to me is that these athletes have scholarship offers to play at other institutions including the ones where these fans are questioning the number of commits NDSU has before the season. Since there schools aren't getting these verbal commitments this early it is bad for NDSU to get them. Sounds like sour grapes to me. Didn't we pick up the #2 rated offensive lineman out of Nebraska? Didn't we also get a verbal from a highly rated DB from Wisconsin? I kinda think this is absurd. It is great to see this caliber of athlete committing to play for the Bison already. The first time I read anything negative about these athletes committing already came from of course SS.com. It made me chuckle and shake my head.
This has been the way with basketball recruiting in some areas for a very long time. Schools come in and see kids with talent. They then stay in touch and watch the progress. By the time the kid gets in to his later years the school who contacted him early has a significant head start-foot in the door over the other schools.
If other schools or fans are questioning or just dont understand the early commits then they are way behind the learning curve on how the recruiting game is played in this day and age. By what I read it sounds as though they dont have a clue.
SDSU hasn't had an offer out to any of the recruits that NDSU landed. Not that they weren't recruiting them as I'm sure that the two from SD were on SDSU's radar.
I'm not coming out and flat out saying that NDSU is picking of recruits early because they are unsure of their upcoming season, it's just a thought. I would actually assume that option A is more likely. NDSU felt these kids were a good fit so they jumped on them before the competition got too heated.
You are right. We jumped on them and held them down and made them give their verbals. I would venture to say that a more accurate assessment of the situation is that these kids that are coming to the summer camps have been so blown away by the staff and facilities at NDSU and they are pulling the trigger while they have the chance. Another factor is the reputation that the NDSU coaches are getting with the area high school coaches. There was a very good interview with the Hopkins coach where he stated how honest and strait forward the NDSU coaches were with the kids as opposed to some recruiters. You have to know that the kids are getting some advice from their HS coaches. I guess NDSU just has a better reputation than some schools :bunnyb: and it is starting to show. (irony, don't you love it?)
Isn't it true that SDSU doesn't even offer scholarships until after the season starts? That's what was said on SDSUFans.com. If that is true, then of course SDSU didn't have offers out to the players NDSU landed; they have NO offers out.
Personally, I think Stig is making a strategic mistake by not offering earlier, but time will tell. Historically, I don't think NDSU & SDSU went head to head on many recruits. That seems to be changing as both schools continue to expand their recruiting bases and they increasingly overlap. If NDSU starts to get more commits of players SDSU wants before they even offer, any battles could start to get awfully one-sided. Just an opinion based on few facts.
- Added Jason Pomerenke to the Verbal List
- Had to split the Interest List from the first post because of a 10,000 character limit on posts.
Fixed it... oops.
You hit the nail on the head with your post. The kid from NE had a solid offer from Ohio, the ND kids will be studs in FCS so I think the coaches know what they're doing. With the early committs now they now can go after some FBS talent and may strike gold with a few of those kids.
SDSU offers a couple/few before the season...my understanding is they have three or four extended at this point-nobody has verballed, though.
NDSU and SDSU are going head-to-head on some recruits. So far, it appears NDSU is in the lead.
NDSU seems to be approaching it like FBS does...get in right away and try to steal a recruit with a full-ride and earlier playing time. SDSU seems to sit and wait for recruits to possibly fall from FBS, see if anyone gets injured or all the sudden rises their Sr. year, and look a bit more into their character before extending the lions share of their offers.
If Hinz were to really have a blow up Senior Year...which is expected....he would have significantly more offers. He is in the heart of Big 12 country down there. 10 minutes from Lincoln. 2 hours from Manhappenen, KS....few hours from Ames, Lawrence, etc. He is a huge get as those schools already know about him from his camps down there. We got him early. Nothing negative about this. Now please sign in February!!!
Yeah, all of these FBS teams in the link below must really suck because most of the top ten teams have 15-20 verbals already for the 2010 signing class.

Stigy can continue to run his team like a DII team if he wants, that is his perogative. As for me, I am glad Bohl is running the FCS Bison as he would a FBS team. But hey, that's just me.
On the verbal list need to add the WR position to the listing for:
Trevor Gebhart, 6-2, 180, Sioux Falls (Washington), SD, WR 8/13/2009 Argus Leader
I'm beginning to think that when coaches tell recruits to "we need to see your first couple games on film" or "if you blow up your senior year we will offer" is coach speak for "we have offers out to our more highly rated prospects and if they don't accept we may offer you."
Unless there is a stud that was injured and didn't play their Jr. year, I just don't think prospects improve so dramatically to get offered. Hinz dominated as a Jr. and will do so again as a Sr...not much to improve on. Although dominant, Nebraska must have kids on their board who they view as more dominant.
IMO, coaches have seen game film of these players from their Jr. year and have seen some in camp. They know who is who and have them prioritzed on a board. The first-tier recruits already have offers. If a prospect verbals elsewhere or indicate not having interest in a particular program, the school moves down their list and offers.
My guess is Nebraska and Iowa State have Hinz as a plan B or C prospect-as many NDSU prospects are to other FBS programs...they'll offer if offered prospects verbal elsewhere and Hinz's name is next up on the board. I think he could get an FBS offer, but IMO it's more about where he is on their board. He could move up on the board, but my guess is he's already pretty high up there.
I think it is a little crazy that having this many recruits verbal now is a bad thing. The coaches offered these players for a reason and if more verbal now I think it gives coaches a better chance to target a few late bloomers or recruits that wait too long to get an FBS offer later.
This also protects against a player the coaches like from blowing up and getting a big offer.
But ultimately I think it is a luxury a lot of coaches would love to have at this point, they can spend more time evaluating future classes and be patient and wait for a few big impact recruits later on.
- Added the position for Trevor Gebhart
- Added Matt Perez of the Offer List. He's an Illinois RB - unfortunately, I found out about the offer in an article saying that he had committed to Indiana.
I can't help but wonder if any of these guys get an offer from a top FBS school would they bail on NDSU. It sure would be nice to say no but if you could play for the likes of Oklahoma, Texas, Michigan, Ohio State,etc... wouldn't it be a no-brainer to take the ride...???
The coaching staff must have a way to limit the exposure of this happening to the program.
***Not sure if any of the verbals are being recruited by the big dawgs so the argument could be for not***
Gebhart from Sioux Falls picked NDSU over SDSU because he really likes the coaches #1 (especially Breske and Samuel). Also the fact that NDSU is always good and to play in front of 18,000 plus at home!!

Helpful spot to look at the players rivals has listed for interest and offers from NDSU. I don't think they had ever had this feature before to look by schools. Helps make sure we didn't miss anyone. It doesn't have all of our verbals changed yet hopefully changes soon though.
Here are the ones not already on the list:
Offer
Matt Eggen, 6-5, 290, La Crosse(Logan), WI, OL *Committed to Minnesota*
Interest
Kyle Deavers, 6-6, 330, Racine (Park High), WI, OT
Reggie Dillingham, 5-11, 230, Glendale (Nicolet), WI, RB
Brad Fischer, 6-6, 255, Hartland (Arrowhead), WI, OL
Taylor Gabriel, 6-3, 265, Manitowoc (Lincoln), WI, OL
Zach Lempka, 6-5, 230, Sterling, NE, DE
Collin Seibert, 6-4, 260, Oswego, IL, OL
Shea Walker, 6-2, 290, St. Paul (C-DH), MN, OL
Xavier Whitaker, 6-2, 195, Brookfield (Central), WI, RB *Committed to Indiana*
They also have Tyler Gefroh down as class of 2011. That's wrong, correct?
Also the possibility of NDSU rescinding the offer, if the kid tanks or major injury or bad decisions. That's why I wish they would tighten up the rules and limit the times. Hockey is getting commitments 3-4 years out and big-time basketball is heading that way. It probably won't get that bad for football, but it's heading in that general direction.
All the offers and verbals are like teenagers and "promise rings". Cutest thing ever, but unless they both feel the same way in February it doesn't mean squat.
No. SDSU had not offered yet, but I think they would have. Gebhart's first touch tonight was a 56 yard punt return for a TD. SF Washington wins 54-0
Last year's recruiting class is being called the best that SDSU's brought in so far. And that's not something the coaches throw around every year, this is the first year I've heard them quoted as saying it. I don't think Coach Stig is worried.
Most high schoolers collect their offers throughout the year and they wait until their season is over so they know what schools they have to choose from. The FCS kids who decide early either get the offer they wanted all along and accept, or they aren't getting any interest from the FBS schools .
Oh...he will be.

According to this article NDSU is pursuing Wheaton (IL) OL/K Nick Immekus.
Some jaw-dropping stats from the ESPN article:
Sounds like a player worthy of picking up on Bibeau's legacy :hide:Quote:
"As an offensive lineman and also a kicker, Immekus is already a rarity among high school players. What puts him in the 99th percentile of kickers/offensive linemen is he's good from 60-plus yards out.
...
Immekus had his coming out party as a kicker during the fourth week of that season. The Tigers were trailing Glenbard North 14-13 with nine seconds remaining and the ball on their opponents' 30-yard line. Muhitch wanted to throw a quick pass play and get Immekus a little closer.
Immekus had a different idea.
"He came over, and he said, 'Coach, I will make this kick,'" Muhitch said. "I turned and looked at him in the eye. Everyone was looking at me in me the huddle. I said, 'Let's go.'
"He not only kicked that thing … Our sophomores were in the end zone, and soon as the ball was kicked, they started going nuts in the end zone. We couldn't see from that angle. He kicked it at least 60 yards."
The 46-yard field goal that defeated Glenbard North is the longest Immekus has connected in a game. Off a one-inch tee in practice, he has nailed a 64-yard field goal. Off the ground, he's hit from as far as 59 yards. He also recorded touchbacks on 65 percent of his kickoffs last season."
With that sort of boot, colleges have been calling. Illinois, Michigan State, Northern Illinois, Southern Illinois and North Dakota State are recruiting him. Muhitch and Immekus realize it's in his best interest to delay his commitment as more schools could come along.
NOTE: Haven't been able to find any other source that confirms this (which conists mostly of rivals), so take this post with a grain of salt the size of a boulder. Just thought I'd throw this out there.
I think SDSU would have offered. Had nothing to do with that. He really likes the coaches and facilities. Pretty simple.
If he really really wanted to play for SDSU I would think he would have waited to verbal until he seen if they would offer, so either A) he had zero intentions on going to any other school and really did fall in love with the Facilities, coaches, tradition, fans (it does happen) or B) SDSU told him they would not give a full ride you decide
Most student athletes would prefer to be located in a suburban setting like Fargo versus a hick town like Brookings. Even if the football field is in a dome the facility and the coaches offices kick a$$ compared to the dump of Cough-Lin and other subpar crap there. So what you have a crap DI outdoor stadium with porta potties and a big screen. BFD!
Max Busher middle linebacker for Rosemount.
He hit a number of camps this summer to showcase his talents for the next level. He attended one day camps at Minnesota, Northwestern, North Dakota State and Northern Iowa. He had offers to go to more camps, but selected the four he attended because of the high interest he has received from each. He has a scholarship offer from North Dakota, NDSU and after the Northern Iowa camp, the coaches told him he could be expecting an offer from them in the coming weeks.
He also took a trip out west and visited Colorado, Colorado State and Wyoming. Since then they have shown a lot of interest.
In addition to the schools he has visited on trips or with camps, he has started to get interest from schools like Washington State, Stanford, Northern Illinois and Western Michigan.
I was looking at the gopher hole this morning and was looking at their Quick Chat section for football recruiting. There was a Quick Chat with Collin Giles ( May 8, 2009) a 6'4" 285 pound LB/Center from Academy of Holy Angels, he mentioned one of the schools that peaked his interest was North Dakota State. I havn't seen him mentioned on the list of potential recruits. Am I missing something ? Has he commited somewhere else ? Just wondering.
