My personal fav is Boise State over Oklahoma. More people remember a g' damn wedding proposal than the actual game.
Come up with something that makes sense or that isn't Sci Fi at least.
Boise State. University of Cincinnati. UCF.
All three examples of schools that for multiple years would be have been included in the 12 team playoff during their success. No Sci Fi, nothing made up.
Big time conference? Up until the past couple years the Valley was near a wash with the MW and better than the MAC. I think we’ve done just fine. Unbiased computer ratings, no sci-fi, nothing made up. Give us 22 more scholarships and I’m even more confident the “grind” doesn’t get us down.
Anywhere else you want to move the goalposts? Or are you just going to say that it all doesn’t matter due to geography (which is probably right, barring some wild circumstances) and move on, until you see some crap bowl on TV and come back using it as a reason to not go FBS?

2013 and 2019 teams would’ve had a serious shot at a NYE bowl. And there also would be an epic conference championship game.
That’s where the top 2 teams each of Mac and mwc played their bowl games. That’s the future in fbs. So maybe we would be lucky and get back to Frisco after all to the half empty stadium for the two fbs bowls down there.

Well unsurprising that you’re completely wrong. Wanna try again? Here’s a hint, use the internet to look up which team won each conference. Neither of those teams played in Frisco.
You can even use Sagarin ratings if you want to pick “best team” from each. Again, neither of those teams played in Frisco.
Utah State (MW champ) beat Oregon State in Los Angeles
Northern Illinois (MAC champ) lost to Coastal Carolina in Orlando
Boise State (MW highest rated) is playing Central Michigan (MAC highest rated) in… a NYE bowl in Tucson.
No Frisco, all better games in better locations (I would know, I live 1.5 miles from Toyota Stadium in Frisco).
Even then, all teams had at least 3 losses. They didn’t have the best season that they could. What I posted above for bowl games is not even the ceiling or what we would define as a great season. Boise State is the highest rated team at 28 in Sagarin. We’ve had at least one team finish above that in recent memory.

Yeah like anyone would want to go to Florida, Arizona or California to watch the Bison play in December.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
There will be a lot more discussion on this and where NDSU may end up/look to in the next 6-8 months.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
I don't think anybody cares about Sagarin anymore but point taken..Mid Major bowl games are abundant and mostly meaningless. It is rare that a mid major gets a big time bowl. It is fun though when it happens. The best part of the MW is not the rinky dinky bowl game it is winning the MW championship. The conference has long long long term rivalries and beating those guys is the real fun.

We care about Sagarin because it’s the only way we have been able to measure ourselves against the FBS. If we are FBS, we won’t care because we’ll be able to do it on the field.

NDSU fans use Sagarin because it’s one of the best, consistently updated and includes FCS with FBS.
The hardest part apparently to getting some people on board with FBS is getting them to understand that going 6-6 and playing in the Frisco bowl is not the ceiling for a G5 school. But, people see a lower bowl on tv and it triggers their confirmation bias.

Yeah I mean if you’re too lazy to check sagarin or any other ratings it’s probably not worth arguing. San Diego State isn’t the best team in the MW, and therefore didn’t make the best bowl out of MW teams.
Facts are facts bud, sorry

Didn’t Western Michigan also make it to one against Wisconsin when the Ol’ car salesman himself PJ was coaching?

Are you out of you effing mind? Boise State was 7-5; there were 4 teams above them in the MWC, and another tied with them at 5-3 in conference.....San Diego State was 12-2...oh, by the way, San Diego State beat Boise State head to head in the regular season. And, by the way, San Diego State played in the Smoothie Cafe FRISCO bowl.
wow a NYE bowl against Central michigan. That's our future? The barstool sports bowl...wow.

The reality of the situation is playing in the Frisco Bowl is the more likely scenario....of course we have no clue what conference we are talking about with NDSU.

Of course it’s the more likely reality. People only make the championship in every single year when they’re playing a subdivision below where they should be.
Should Clemson move down to FCS because they’re more likely to win a championship here?

Jeez, the CFP ranking has San Diego State at 24....Where's Boise in the CFP rankings?
The coaches poll doesn't have Boise above San Diego State. The AP poll doesn't have Boise above San Diego State. All you have is the Sagarin poll which in this case is ridiculous given it has Boise higher than 4 teams that beat them head to head....

All those you reference are human bias polls, notoriously slanted towards win/loss. Your point about head to head is fair, but game outcomes are one data point in a season of them. Would you argue SDSU is better than us because of one game? Or Indy State was better than us in 2012?
It’s all kinda sports talk semantics, at the end of the day there’s a MW and a MAC team playing on NYE. That much can’t be argued. Neither can the fact that both teams would be better competition for us than Montana State, the game will be better attended, the location is better and the tv ratings will be higher.

Great. 2 conferences NDSU won't get into playing a game. Sounds amazing.

Probably, maybe not. But the conversation wasn’t about if it will happen, it was about which is the better setup.
Which ultimately is the problem with these endless circular arguments. There’s two separate discussions getting muddled into one.
Which is preferable if we were given the option, and will the opportunity ever come up?

Well, San Diego state did play the conference USA champ in the Frisco bowl game, and that champ is higher ranked than the directional Michigan team per sagarin. Would I go see a NYE game of NDSU against a directional Michigan team…probably not. It would probably have less attendance than the NDSU Montana state game too.
I did go to meaningless bowl games in Ft. Worth when I lived in DFW because they were giving free tickets away at the base in Ft Worth because otherwise the stands would have been empty.

I certainly agree that a majority of the bowl games are stupid. The whole system is not ideal (neither is FCS, FWIW), but I feel it’s where our peers are.

I don’t believe you’ll see a NY6 Bowl with two G5 teams. That is basically reserved for the top G5 if one makes it and a top P5 team.

Following the 2010 season WAC champ Boise State played MWC champ TCU in the Fiesta Bowl. Still a big deal for those schools but it said “you kids have fun at the kid’s table” to me.

Not like it’s gonna be a regular occurrence though. I think in the years two G5 teams do qualify for one of the major bowls they will be pitted against each other like in that game. Maybe the CFP has some rules about it I’m not aware of though.

Ok so during what was the BCS and before the P5 was officially a thing. That was way back when USF was like 2 in the country. Same timeframe.

It will be rare that 2 G5 teams do make into the NY6 games, just saying it is definitely possible. It could've happened this year had BYU not stumbled against Boise and finished undefeated. Pretty good chance they would be playing in the Peach Bowl instead of Michigan State.
In the event 2 G5 teams would make it (and 1 isn't in the CFP) my opinion is its very likely those 2 teams would be paired up in their bowl game like Boise St & TCU were in 2009.

I want the Vikings to win the Super Bowl but that ain't happening either. So bring up something realistic when you make an arguement. Doesn't make anyone a "d2er" just means they have some common sense.

Meh I’m a pretty staunch FBSer but I’ll shit on most bowl games. But we aren’t moving up to play in bad bowl games. We’re moving up for the chance at a NYE bowl and hopefully more than that in the not too distant future.

Overall, the last few years, the difference in research money from state sources is in the same neighborhood of the overall difference in research funding between the schools, which is why the incessant whining about funding is an interesting stance to take.

Would guess he’s talking about money each institution gets from the state for each student enrolled.
It’s been about 10 years but I think the last time I looked, UND gets like 10x more for each med student than all schools get for regular students. Engineering was like a 4x multiplier or something.
I have no idea where it came from or what it’s called, btw.

Based on a post in the JMU dynasty thread, NDSU will have to improve the marching band if we want to compete in the FBS.

Cool story bro alert:
Funny story about the beer song, I met a coworker at a company kool-aid event a couple years ago, she was in the band at Iowa when we beat them. We're at a bar afterwards and we're talking about where everyone went to college in our group of 10 or so. It gets to me, I say NDSU.
Her eyes flash the fire of hell and she proceeds to interject for a few minutes on a long rant about how NDSU is a joke, we STOLE the game, and then afterwards we played *their* victory song (In Heaven There Is No Beer) to troll them. Everyone else is from Texas, went to school at A&M or UT, have pretty much no idea what the hell she's on about lol. Biggest smile on my face the entire time. I wasn't there for the Montana fan protoplasm episode but I would say it was probably at least half as epic.
I apologized, told her that I didn't think we stole it, but I guess you could say we ran away with it with a wink. Thanked her school for inventing the song that we've been practicing for 30 years just unleash on their unsuspecting band, and told her if she's so upset she should take it up with her AD to see if he's man enough to schedule a rematch. I was sure he would understand, not like he would've come from some joke of a school after all.
Pretty much ended with her exclaiming how much she hates NDSU. Saltiest tears I've ever tasted firsthand. Too funny
