UNI is ranked 11th in bball. I want that.

How far is anyone willing to take them in the NCAA Brackets?
Ranked 11th is huge though.

I always have thought it was a bit ridiculous that we didn't have DI hockey in this town. There is no question it could be supported. No, we wouldn't be absolutely top-tier like UND is to start with but an FM team could absolutely be competetive and over the course of several decades could emerge as top-tier. We have the youth programs and local interest.

But I am starting to see the other side now. NDSU has done very well during their transition to DI. I'd rather see them have overall excellence than hockey. That said, I do believe we will have a local hockey team at some point. How much would it hurt NDSU to have MSUM competing for local sponsorships? Like it or not, hockey would be fairly high-profile in this region.

I would 100% support (and own season tickets to) hockey at MSU-Moorhead. This would in no way affect my donations or attendance at NDSU events.

Oh I'm sure you wouldn't be the only one. But corporate sponsors aren't likely to spend additional money at MSUM without taking away from what they spend with NDSU (or some other part of their budget). It would affect NDSU, I just have no idea how much.

But with Scheels Arena they'd be starting with a facility as good or better than anything in the region outside of Mariucci and the Ralph.

Fargo already HAS a "local" hockey team. It's called the Fargo Force, and I hear they draw pretty darn well. Or are you not going to be happy unless it is somehow an NCAA top-tier D-1 program?

And we also have D3 hockey over at Concordia. MSUM has been talking about D-1 hockey for years....and obviously can't make it work, otherwise I assume they already would have.

The fact is, there is plenty of hockey in and around Fargo, so what we are REALLY talking about here is competing against UND's program. And for what? An ego trip against UND? NDSU does not need to be everything for everybody. I'm plenty fine with letting UND be what they are (a hockey-only school) and NDSU be what we are (basically, everything else that is successful!).

Junior hockey is where the future is anyway. If I were a hockey fan in Fargo-Moorhead, I would be advocating for a higher level junior hockey team rather than an NCAA program. Leave NDSU out of it.

Very nice post. NDSU would only get in the WCHA, which is practically all D2 teams playing up. It won't be acceptable to be in a lower level league compared to UN_.

Anything that even remotely has the potential to take away from NDSU's other successful programs makes absolutely no sense to me. Without mega bucks coming from someone like SS had I don't see how it could be done.
