Well I can promise you that Mertens WON'T be the QB next year. If Jose doesn't beat his a$$ there will be a transfer or a even a kid out of H.S. who can read the D and execute better than Mertens. He sucked and he is the primary reason the Bison went 6-5. So if you want another 6-5 or worse season stay with Mertens.
SD BISON..
$100. Im in! who else wants in??
Unless they bring in an off the wall freshman or a kickass juco Im afraid we will be stuck with Mertens until the following year.
I think what they need to do is not protect him this year. If he gets hurt so be it. Then let the next man step up.
I agree that he hamstrung the team this year. Ive never seen one player fail at every critical juncture of the game as he did many times this last year. But last year is over. Thank god. PL

When you play football, you gotta like the taste of blood, And 50 percent of the time, it's your blood.
You don't give out trophies for losing. Trophies for sucking. That's a communist idea. You don't get a trophy for losing. You get a piece of pizza and you shut up. Trophies for losing? What the hell happened to us?

Yoooo..... Wheres The Summit Tickets You Told Me I Could Buy?!?!?
You see, here is the problem. Bohl tole everybody he was holding an "open competition last spring. Mertens wins, as we ALL THOUGHT HE WOULD. Again this spring Bohl will most likely hold an "open competition" and most likely it will be Mertens that comes out on top. You can say Jose is better but are you the coach..... No. I would take this bet along with Lakes. So i have a question for you.... What if Mertens is the QB and we do better than 6-5, will you take back your words, because i can promise you one thing. That thing is, as soon as he does something good everybody is going to be saying Bohl was a genius for leaving him in, Bohl must have knew that he had it in him.
To keep this towards recruting, you saw what happened when Mertens saw his first REAL action against the MVFC, the speed killed him. What is going to happen when a true freshman steps in. We don't get those amazing recruits that can just step in. At this level they are 1 out of a million. We dont get the Matt Barkley's or the Russel Shepard's or the Jimmy Clausen's here. Thes are the QB's i'm talking about: http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com...sp?ra_key=2113 So if the speed of the game killed Mertens his first full year then what is going to happen when we throw a true freshman in there or even Jose. I can gaurantee that he is going to have troubles and then everybody will calling for his head. The only way that Mertens gets sidelined is by a good FBS transfer and so far, no luck. So when Mertens starts kickin ass in 09' what are you going to say SD.
P.S.- I ripped Mertens apart on this board but i have accepted the fact that he is it.
SD you're crazy
Mertens will start, Jose may push him which would be great, but if I were in Vegas I'd put my money down on Mertens to be the starter. For reasons already mentioned and the fact that maybe Bohl realizes Mertens wasn't the whole problem and that the coaching staff didn't play to all his strengths.
NDSU to the FBS always. In all ways.
