2009 Recruits

Seems our season record this past year isn't affecting recruits......could it be the excellent university, the workmanlike team attitude, the outstanding coaches, the great tradition, the FBS caliber facilities, the high level of fan interest, or the vibrant city environment that helped make the decision? Funny how SDSU fans said their second win in a row against NDSU would bolster their recruiting. Wonder if that really makes any difference? How is SDSU's recruiting going compared to NDSU? Any head to head wins / losses?

Personally I do not thing that 1 off season will affect recruiting to much. String a bunch together and it would have more effect. And having solid progressive academic programs never hurts recruiting either.

NDSU and SDSU do not seem to do much head to head recruiting except for the athletes from South Dakota.

How many scholarships do the Bison have to give out? Coach Stig said SDSU only had 9 or 10 this year, which is low.

Was it 16 Seniors announced at the last game? plus or minus a couple I would presume.

NDSU and SDSU do not seem to do much head to head recruiting except for the athletes from South Dakota.

They also had a couple people leave the team - Bourne-McFarland, Purcell, ect.

OK, I was down in the dumps about the 2008 football season, but now I am starting to get fired up about the 2009 season!

I think I recall everyone thought Mays was going to be a stud. As for Drago, he was more highly thought of as a tall wide receiver that was expected to do good things......turns out he used his foot better than his hands. We must have believed Walker could contribute right away though we had no proof other than HS performance. When Stauss looked bad a game or two before the UNC meltdown we all wanted Walker in. Apparently he sucked at practice so Bohl was afraid to put him in. What a surprise to Bohl when Walker took the reigns and executed with confidence.

I heard the opposite...

When I was a GA for the Sports Information Department in 03-04, one of my softball buddies was a student-trainer for the football squad. From what he saw, he told me that Walker was the going to be the real deal (even though he was only a redshirt) because he was so good at practice. When I was watching Steve during his senior year, I always thought of my friend's comments.

It is interesting the reasons kids have for attending certain schools. You can never be certain why they would choose one school over another. Academics, location, how they interact with other recruits on thier visit, how they interact with coaches, an undescriptive word "feel" for one university over another. My favorite example of this was the recruiting class of which I was a part, 2002. UND was coming off of a national championship and NDSU did not make the playoffs. NDSU absolutely killed UND in head to head recruting in the state of North Dakota that year. All of the high profile players within North Dakota chose NDSU over UND. Why? Who knows. All you can do in recruiting is show a player what you have to offer and the rest is up to them. Some players can be convinced, others know where they want to go and no amount of talking or reasoning can convince them otherwise. Ryan Chappell is a great example of this. I hosted him on his recruiting visit to NDSU and neither him nr his father would stop talking to me about UND. He did not even attempt to listen to anything we were telling him, he had made up his mind before he came down.
