It's easier to get caught up on turf and end your career trying to avoid injury though, right? I mean, why stop at QBs, why don't our RBs slide before taking contact if being tackled is that dangerous?

I don't think Bison QBs should slide except when they would otherwise take a huge hit, and I'd prefer to leave it up to their judgment. The spots you get on slides are almost always terrible too - I swear that one in Arizona was where the ref thought Cam started thinking about sliding.

Not to argue but RB's have to take the hits ----or they don't play. QB's should avoid excessive hits........ imagine RB's avoiding/shying away from contact. Good Lord !!! Wouldn't that be a hoot; they'll find themselves deep in the depth chart, standing beside the coach with a pencil and clipboard in hand. Regarding the spotting of the ball on a sliding ball carrier. .... the ball is spotted at the yard line where the ball's further most point is when the ball carrier's knee, hip, or elbow first contacts the playing surface. So, when a RB is sliding, the knee or hip, or elbow is the first thing that touches the playing surface. That's where he's downed and the official determines the further most point of the ball; that spot is where the ball is next put in play.

Agree here on sliding surfaces. I've got baseball players who are reluctant to slide on a "dirt" field that are some of the most aggressive sliding on turf fields.... because it's easier.

The only other point I would make is that there are fewer and fewer kids sliding feet first in baseball, most everything tends to be head first with the stupid oven mitts, so "baseball slide" is not as useful/widespread as it used to be.

Good points........I've noticed that also with the sliding mitts, even at the U9 and 10 levels.............lots of mothers out there asking themselves, "Now where did I put that oven mitt? I used it last Easter when I baked those hams and pies." Next thing you know she's accusing her husband of using her mitts in his welding shop.

Kids have been sliding head first for 30 years. It was “ruining the game” at least as far back as when I did it.
I do find pre-teens running the bases with an oven mit on their right hand hilarious though.

Unless they are protecting a prior injury the pros all put it on the right because that’s how you go back into the base on a pickoff attempt. So until kids are at a level where leading off a base is allowed it’s all pretty transparent hero worship. Which I guess is fine too.

It's not that you come to a conclusion about it. Through that argument you change your mind sometimes... That's how societies grow.
