Whats to stop the Power Conference from leaving the NCAA and just creating something similar to the NFL? One conference is the Big Ten the other is the SEC and you have divisional pods similar to the NFC/AFC.

Anyone catch ML on 1660 today? Sounds like he went into the weeds on FBS a bit
Cliff notes? Missed it today
I think CUSA could be viable if and only if they get creative, so they would first need to fire whoever is running it into the ground currently. They have exactly one asset that I see, FBS conference status, the rest of it, media rights, non-football sports are all trash. That said leverage your FBS status to get the best of the rest. And get a content package a streaming service would want to host. The conference is in three time zones already they just need teams that care about football and have some level of regional rivalry.
Probably not possible but if I was running CUSA I would try to get to 20 teams with 4 pods of 5 teams. That's big enough to have a semi final, final format. Still do the trash bowl the bowl games, but winning CUSA would be more meaningful.
North: NDSU, SDSU, ISUr, Montana, Montana State.
Northeast: UMass, UConn, Delaware, Villanova, Liberty
East: FIU, MTSU, Western Kentucky, Jax State, ETSU
South: UTEP, NMSU, LA Tech, SHSU, Missouri State
All adds are football only so cost wouldn't change to materially assuming everyone is flying already anyway. The conference would get very little from a traditional TV deal, like the CUSA current deal so finding a streaming partner would be a must. No FloSports bs.
Semi final round played on campus. Hold the Championship game in a fun city that is warm and is easy to get to; Dallas, Nashville, Memphis.
There's a few reasons this won't happen:
- CUSA is cash poor and reluctant to expand, because they don't want to split the pie for their NCAA and CFP money with more schools. As of now, there is no media deal after this year, and if they land something, it probably will be Flo, or similar. They pissed off ESPN the last time around, so thats not an option now. Believe I saw Fox said no thanks also.
- It seems the school presidents are scared to lay a hand on Judy, because she is the first female commissioner. They don't want negative PR from firing her.
- If they do expand, it looks like the next schools up are those that will make SHSU, UTEP, NMSU happy - namely SFA, Tarleton, etc. Judy has made this a texas centric league, and they are willing to dig deep in that pool. Maybe they go as far as Kennesaw, but that rumor was recently denied by both CUSA and KSU AD.
- some of the schools on that list hope to land elsewhere. WKU wants MAC. MTSU wants AAC. Missouri St has been talking to SBC. CUSA is toxic right now, and most FBS schools would only go there if forced to. LT wants out, but has nowhere to go. They'd jump in a heartbeat for SBC or AAC.
How much cash could actually be involved from the NCAA and CFP per team? My thought above was that it was near zero because the independents would take break-even money if it was out there. Or maybe they just take the paydays from the non conference beat downs from the Big10 in the early fall and then the SEC in the late fall.
Also Judy is a fool if she thinks a 4th tier Texas league is a good idea. SEC, Big 12, AAC, then CUSA good call.
On streaming, you need one of YouTube, Amazon, or Apple and you don’t do it for money you do it for exposure and stream quality. The CAA stuff is awful, I think flosports is still trying to hit my Amex from the Delaware game.
At this point I just want to see NDSU avoid the hallowed out FCS and dissolving fan interest, Murray State home games will not help. How much to buy CUSA fire everyone and move HQ to Fargo? I can see the Hero Sports headline now… NDSU privately funds purchase of FBS conference.
