Everything changes when the P5 splits. Nobody knows what the G5 will even look like. Perhaps the Montanas and SDSU wanna go then too? Any FBS conference that would even consider NDSU before the changes hit the fan will more than likely be raided and dust anyway. Too much uncertainty at the moment.
Yep. Montana and SDSU and whoever else constitutes the "top of FCS" should figure their business out on their own. The reasoning that the "top of FCS" gets to just move up because they're competitive with G5 is dumb. They haven't been invited yet because they fit 0 needs of any G5 conference, which includes us. That doesn't change just because the P5 took their ball and walked.
Similar to the past ~5 years, we should be working to get to FBS asap and if whatever conference we end up in thinks SDSU and/or Montana fit their needs we can add them at that time. Or we can come out and proactively pair with one of them similar to our transition to FCS. Not trying to make a move because we don't want to speak out of turn with those schools or because the future is murky is ridiculous and hyper-beta. Most FCS schools would be happy (or at least completely understand) if we openly pushed to leave.
I've understood the past "don't rock the boat and go public with FBS intentions" stance. In this environment, that stance no longer makes sense. It's musical chairs time now.
Mountain West, hope for the best.
Right now the only G5 that may be considering/open to FCS members is the CUSA. While i'm not a huge fan of the schools in that conference, at the end of the day they can say that the are FBS and in the G5. Now, if a big change happens and there is a breakaway and the G5 starts to reorganized at least we'd be in the conversation. The G5 however would not need any more schools (as stated earlier). They can do whatever playoff system they like with their 60 or so teams. They will NOT need any FCS teams.
In this scenario, NDSU would then be at a point of begging to try to get into the G5. At that point, I hope we're not turned down to forever be in the FCS.
