Very true statement. They aren't at the level of a B1G school but they are mostly very good, respected universities in this part of the country. My son graduated from Ball State. They have a phenomenal telecommunications program (with funding from alumnus David Letterman), a very good journalism program, and solid in other core programs many universities have (business, computer science, nursing, education, etc.). With 23k students they are twice the size of NDSU.
As for football, as a whole they are a step up from the MVFC. It's not a huge step and NDSU would definitely be capable of competing right away. But more games would be more competitive. Friends who have moved up from MVFC to MAC have said they notice the better level of play. The atmosphere overall is better in the MVFC though. The midweek games are miserable. They struggle with some of the same things many G5 and FCS teams do...a lot of their alumni are fans of the bigger universities in there state. And they have generally don't have a long history of success to build up a big fan base.

I don't care what Jim says. That is not the real Ben Franklin. I'm 99% certain.
Wrestling is my 2nd favorite sport to follow at NDSU. MAC wrestling would absolutely suck compared to the Big 12.
Yes, there is a lot of sarcasm but in your defense, there are also many serious comments on this board that would warrant your response.
I for one appreciate your comments on here, it's interesting to get the perspective of someone not close to NDSU (I guess I'm making an assumption here).

I know this isn't how university types think, BUT, Boise State isn't exactly Harvard and they seem to play a significant role in the national football scene. Sometimes I think that part gets too much emphasis when talking about athletic conferences.
I don't know what the answer is but I guess I'm left hoping there is some fire behid the 3rd hand rumors that have been mentioned here in the last few days.

I’m trying to not be overly excited/optimistic about some of the possible stuff happening behind the scenes that some have stated as of late. It’s like being all excited to have a weekend off and the weather is awesome and find out at 4:45pm Friday afternoon that we have a train to unload/load all weekend and the weather is expected to take a 180. I’m just going to sit and wait till someone gets the text.

I was just being goofy responding to what I thought was a lighthearted post about NDSU moving to the "Pac 10" 3 years after joining the MW.. I think you guys are alright.
I am interested in the debate about moving up. My alma mater, Nevada had similar debates before moving up. The Big West was in the process of collapsing as a football conference. A few of the nearby California schools dropped the sport. The conference scrambled like crazy adding schools like Louisiana Lafayette, Arkansas State and North Texas. None were in the West. Boise didn't come on board for 4 or 5 more years. It was tough sledding for a small school, with a limited budget but we had a hall of fame coach and a lot of drive. It got us to the WAC and then the MW. It took about 20 years.
While it may be different for you, moving up is not a smooth ride for the most part. But, if you want it bad enough it can be done.
I came here because of some misconceptions about the MW. I have no inside info but I am guessing the conference is aware of NDSU. If the conference wants you they will invite you. However, there are some layers that make an invitation unlikely anytime soon. The MW tv deal runs through 2026. I don't think they will look to add until then even if they lose a school or 2 in the interim.
Pac 10 or bust.
