It is a risk but I am not sure how we move forward without taking a risk. I don't see any ideal situation falling into our laps like JMU got.
NDSU to the FBS always. In all ways.

JMU's situation is ideal geographically but it is still a risk financially. They have previously funded their athletics on the back of student fees. Now by moving to the FBS they are by state law required to lower the percentage of athletic funding coming from student fees. They do have 3-5 years, I believe, to do that. However, they are still taking a risk. They have done their due diligence and believe the funding gap can be made up with increased donors, higher game payouts, increased ticket sales and FBS TV contracts. I say this to further support your point that any move that we make, or any school makes, is going to have some level of risk. Texas and OU moving to the SEC has a large amount of risk. There is never going to be a zero risk/no brainer option.

If you're in a conference like what the CUSA is alleged to be the ceiling isn't good.

You are correct. I don't care. I know where NDSU falls in the grand scheme of college athletics. I mean we could be dreaming of the Potato Bowl with one hundred of our friends. WHOA...such a think big mindset.

    Or the realistic outcome.

I’m not advocating for CUSA at all costs but every year that passes with us still in FCS gives us fewer and fewer options and the urgency increases. You don’t like any options so I’m not sure exactly what you are arguing for or against. Based on my observations, the math doesn’t work for us to stay FCS with declining attendance and revenues and still try to grow our athletic department.

We're a top 50 team right now in multiple all-D1 computer rankings. I'll say this, if we were consistently a Top-50 team in the worst FBS conference for 10 years, people would at least recognize it, we'd be a household name in MW conference talks. Not a cute school with a great history beating up on small division schools.

The difference in ability is no different between the two examples. The difference is the perception people have. For myself and many others, there just is no getting around having to already be FBS when MW or MAC comes sniffing around to expand. The FBS brand is that important.

If we were to go and fail and flame out, guess what? We'd be back at FCS, probably winning championships in short order considering what little competition was left is now leaving.
