Yes, I might be naïve, but I think Sankey knows that the only thing that can bring them down is greed. What makes college sports entertaining is that the little guy has a shot. If you kill that, you kill interest. So it’s worth it to pay the G5 chump change to create a sense that everyone has a shot (see March Madness). And to the G5, that chump change is gold, way more than they could make if they split off with the top of FCS and had their own playoffs. If there’s anything universal, it’s $$$$, and the SEC will make boatloads of it just off the regular season, never mind multiple bids in the CFB playoff. My prediction is that FBS splits off, P5 stays at 5 (see hoops) and the playoff expands to 12, but we will see.

Sounds harsh, but if NDSU gets a shot, they should move up just for the $$$ and brand exposure. And FWIW, I don’t think ML would say what he just said publicly if he had any doubts about finances, which tells me that NDSU has their ducks in a row.

But hey, no invite, no problem. I’ll support the program either way, and for whatever reason, USD and UND will be very happy if we don’t move up.

It’s my opinion Sankey just dangled the carrot to keep people off their trail. They have the most powerful conference in all of sports and I’m sure in his mind they deserve 6 bids to the playoffs.
Yes it’s about the money, which is why they don’t want the G5. Honest question, do you think the TV contract would be less if it was a playoff that didn’t involve the G5? I don’t and if it’s all about money like we all agree then you should understand that without the G5 in the playoff, they don’t have to share any money with them. The pie would be bigger and less mouths to feed. It’s just seems so blatantly obvious to me, but again I really hope I am wrong.

When has the little guy had a shot at the national championship?

I 100% agree with your other two paragraphs.

This Strawman doesn't fly with me.

Should Illinois, UNLV, Kansas, Colorado St all move down to FCS? because they have 0.00% chance of winning a Natl Title every year as well.
NDSU TO FBS. HAVEN'T WE WON ENOUGH?

You honestly think if Illinois or Kansas go undefeated they wouldn’t get into the playoff? If so there is no point in having this convo with you. If CSU and UNLV go undefeated they have no chance to make the playoff. And when they are left behind by the power conferences they won’t have a choice.

Im just saying Ilinois Kansas NEVER will have a shot at the NATL title cuz they SUCK.

so in some people's eyes (not you) they should move down to FCS so they can win a title.

Kansas was ranked like 2 in the country near the end of one season a decade ago. If a few plays broke the other way, they would have been playing for one.

2007 under Mangino. They were ranked #2 in week 13, playing #3 Mizzou. They win that game, which they ended up losing by 8, they're undefeated and they're easily playing in the title game.

GTFO of here with your bullshit.

Lakes?!? HAvent you heard? Illinois is BEGGING to be FCS. Patty V is literally talking with the Gophers, Kansas, Nebraska, Illinois, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Wake forest, Syracuse, and at least 20 others who are absolutely f*cking BEGGING to be accepted to the Missouri Valley.

They want CHAMPIONSHIPS, baby! its all about those FCS titles! They've seen what Sam Houston was able to do this past year and they WANT. A. PIECE.

I just got the text, Major Missouri Valley expansion coming soon. those stupid FBS programs have realized that the FCS is where the action is. Theres just no $$$ in FBS, or media attention, or better recruits, or better anything, really.

Brian MacLaughlin's recruiting ratings prove it. JMU just landed the highest recruiting class in college football for what, the 8th year in a row? Literally everything is better in the FCS, and those G5 and even most P5 programs are starting to see the light
Time to join our peers in the FBS. Do WHATEVER it takes. Also... consider firing ML. any CEO who is 5-10 years behind the tide/movement gets fired. Why do we accept this with ML?

We've almost seen it happen before. Houston in 2016 may have been in had they not pissed their pants.

Coming off a big bowl win, they #3 OU to start the year. They proceeded to be ranked #6 before getting upset by Navy. They got boatraced by SMU a couple weeks later. They got things sorted out, and pounded #3 Louisville, before getting upset again by Memphis. Had they not shit the bed, they'd have been undefeated with two top 5 wins. I presume that would have been enough to get them in over Washington who was not undefeated, and did not have the same sort of marquee wins.

It's not impossible to do, it's just really really hard for the G5 schools. I think you need to be pretty good the year before (to get some decent preseason hype), and then you need to hope the P5's you schedule end up being very good (get recent playoff level teams on the schedule), and you need to not slip up along the way.
