Honestly I think there would be an argument against an undefeated Kansas. The Big XII is having a down year with Kansas left standing at the top of the heap. SEC champ, B1G champ, ACC and/or PAC 10 champ, and a one-loss SEC team (Georgia/LSU/Auburn/TAMU/etc.) all have stronger resumes in the eyes of the committee in the current 4 team model. I'd also think if Texas or Oklahoma were one-loss teams with their lone loss coming against Kansas that there would be the "outlier" argument.

I think the point is though, that realistically, the mountains that programs like kansas, syracuse, illinois, rutgers, vanderbilt , wake forest etc. would have to climb to go undefeated are so insanely high that it will never statistically happen. Like winning the lottery, yes it is POSSIBLE, but it may as well be impossible because the chance is so miniscule.

Teams like Baylor, TCU OK State have all had their best seasons in school history and still have not made a playoff in those particular years. there is almost zero chance they could make a 4 team playoff- its really only possible/likely way they make it is in a 12 team playoff
Time to join our peers in the FBS. Do WHATEVER it takes. Also... consider firing ML. any CEO who is 5-10 years behind the tide/movement gets fired. Why do we accept this with ML?

Back when I went to school and NDSU wasn’t “big timey” yet my buds and I all had our favorite FBS teams as well as NDSU. One guy didn’t have a team so we selected Vanderbilt for him and would excitedly proclaim the Vanderbilt scores for him and console him after looses etc.

One year saw that vegas had Vandy at 276,000:1 odds to win the SEC. was super tempted to place a bet but was before internet gambling was easy and had no clue how to place a bet like that anyway.

That season Jay Cutler tore it up for them and damn near won the thing. Damn near.

TCU would have made a 4 team playoff from the Mountain West, granted that the MWC was much better then. OK State almost made the title game after losing to Iowa State, they absolutely would have made a 4 team playoff.

Stanford would have once been on this list of hopeless programs

Kansas was literally 8 points away from an undefeated season less than 15 years ago.

Gene Taylor with thoughts on P6 realignment. Says it's basically done for a few more years. Makes some good points. Probably not great news if you're hoping for something to shake loose for NDSU.

    https://footballscoop.com/news/kansa...n-done-for-now

“Nothing's going to happen this year, I'd be shocked,” Taylor told host John Kurtz. “Obviously, I don't think … I do have friends in other leagues and when I talk to those ADs that I'm close with, I'm hearing that they're not doing anything.”

    ...

“We haven't solidified anything or headed down a certain direction,” Taylor said. “Just for now, there is time on our hands although people maybe sometimes don't believe that. Because the Grant of Rights has four more years left on that through 2024-25.

“The best thing for us is to stay together (as a conference) because if we start to fall apart, we lose the Grant of Rights and all the dollars that go along with that and doesn't put us in a good position.”

    ...

“There's a lot of rumors, but look, the Big Ten doesn't need to add anybody. They're fine where they are. Their money is plenty where it is. The Pac-12 is probably one that has maybe right now the most challenging (path) because of TV revenue. The ACC has a Grant of Rights that goes through 2035. There's a lot of rumors out there that I don't think people know the difficulty of various situations in each of the conferences. I think we just have to understand there are going to be rumors and we have to stay true to each other and move forward together the best we can, the eight of us.”

He has some good level headed points but I guess I for one wasn't expecting any real changes in alignment for 2-3 years but that doesn't happen overnight. the conversations have started and the wheels are already turning. I believe changes in conference alignment will happen by 2024-2025.

Thats right! I was only looking as far back as the CFP has existed, but you are right I think a TCU team as well as Boise would have each made a 4 team playoff in the 2000s

Yup. but they werent undefeated. Just like TCU OkSt and Baylor werent which is why they didnt get in the playoff.

Kansas is literally the worst P5 team right now. It is POSSILBE they could surpass not only every team in the big 12 but every P5 Team, but I wont hold my breath. If you want to die on the hill of "Kansas, Illinois, Minnesota, rutgers, maryland, Kentucky, vandy, UCLA, Cal, Colorado, Nebraska, Michigan state, purdue, indiana, texas tech, ole miss, missippi state, NC State, South Carolina, Wazzou, oregon state, arizona and arizona state all have legitimate shots at the CFP and are on the CUSP of greatness", be my guest.

I'm arguing the statistical fact that most every single one of these schools has next to no shot at the CFP as it stands now.

Of course they don't have a shot at the CFP. They're bad at football. They're not getting in because they're no good, not because of systemic barriers or bias.
