I'd suggest that it would involve much more than simply adding scholarships to existing women's programs. It would probably require adding a sport or maybe two in addition to bumping the dollars contributed to the existing sports for coaching, recruiting, etc. There would likely be larger increases on the women's side to maintain balance. I have a feeling we aren't exactly a long way into the "green" right now when it comes to Title IX. There are 3 methods of maintaining compliance and you only have to meet one. I'd be shocked to learn that we comply under all three methods.
One of the three methods is obsolete("progress"), so there are only two to consider. NDSU doesn't even come close to meeting "proportionality". We use "interests and abilities". I'd put money that the first women's sport we would add would be tennis. It's a low-scholarship sport, so it wouldn't help much if we were using proportionality, but it's a sport actually played by girls in our recruiting area(by this I mean the general student body recruiting, not athletic recruiting). Tennis is also easy from a facilities standpoint as we could use tennis courts around town like those guys to the north. Finally, we'd have an instant home in the Summit. If West Fargo actually goes through with the aquatics center and chooses the expensive option with the Olympic pool and the diving area, then swimming and diving could also be on the list for the same reasons as tennis.
Let me say this again to many in the thread, adding 22 scholarships for football does not automatically mean 22 scholarships for women must be added. The situation is a heck of a lot more complex than that, and it's a pet peeve when people throw that out there. Northern does a good job alluding to that complexity in his post.

Could work. So the team would be TAB(beer brewer), CAS(biker babe beauties), and who's got the blow?

At some point there will have to be a 16-24 team tournament similar to FCS, but that seems light years away?
So, the question was, "Why all the fuss about moving up to FBS?" Seems like a fair question to me?
We should wait and see what literally happens at the FBS/BCS level, but maybe that will be waiting too long? Maybe we need to be in a conference ASAP? But which conference? Wyoming is not even in a BCS conference right now?
Too many questions with only limited speculation for answers.

I don't want to be anybody else. I want to be NDSU setting its own path to greatness no matter where that greatness is achieved. So don't group me in with that "we would rather" because no I don't.

This^^^^^^. I want NDSU to do something unique with its future or present. I have heard on the radio a few times how we are referred to as the Alabama of the FCS, so when I called College Sports News on XM radio one time, I referred to Alabama as the NDSU of the FBS.

What greatness is there when theres a capped bubble? Everyone around the country will keep on asking why NDSU isn't moving up to FBS.
soooo if that's your pinnacle, we're just going to have to agree to disagree.

Ahhhh who gives a shit if people are asking when will we move up? Its none of there business. NDSU will move up when or if they get and invite and or when it benefits NDSU. Not there curiosity or somebodys ego.

Plenty of us do. hard to see the untapped talent that the NDSU program possesses when it keeps winning championships at a level the majority of the country doesn't watch.
I just dont see the benefits of staying here.
*cue the "DONATE the 25 million it takes to move up" comments. *

Please explain how it is untapped talent when we keep winning championships? You seemed more concerned that certain parts of the country dont know about us as opposed to what is best for NDSU at this moment.

There's always going to be a capped bubble until you are in the Power 4 or 5 conferences. And even then if you aren't in the SEC, you are handicapped also. So unless you have a way to get NDSU into the SEC, there is always some sort of capped bubble.

What greatness is there in the mountain west? Or Mac? Are you serious??? Are you watching these crappy bowls?
The bold above is the problem. IMO...most of the pro FBSers just want to be able to say NDSU is FBS. Thats the only reason. Who cares if people keep asking? Why cant the answer be..."Because the bowl system is a joke"

How isn't national prestige NOT on the top of anybodys list?
Its preposterous to sit here and argue that staying FCS is what's best. Its a money driven sport now. 8 straight FCS championships don't add up to squat at the FBS level. Again, at what championship does it stop at when we're thinking "OK this team we're playing can barely bring 1000 fans to their biggest game..every game not involving NDSU is half emptied stadiums".
NDSU is far too good for FCS. The programs in this division are embarrassing outside of what, 3? unacceptable...but to some, thats the top of the mountain. Kudos i guess.

Did you see the EIU, EWU, SeLa, SHSU stands?
yea, theyre like those meaningless bowl games. but this is for the playoffs. NDSU deserves better than schools who can't afford to pay the electrical bill

I'd love for NDSU to be in the MWC. It is where NDSU belongs.
With that said I don't see it happening anytime soon.

What does the opposing teams fan support have to do with quality of play? I understand what you are saying. But I dont think your talking points arent the catalyst for moving up a division.

Because look at how those great seeded teams did under NDSU.
My talking points are pretty clear. Its money driven now. Any FBS conferences is beneficiary to the MVFC. TV contracts, bowl game payouts, bigger stadium. All help NDSU grow.
the same guys saying the bowl games suck (they do, i know), arent taking the fact that the same division NDSU is in, has games @ a schools home stadium, that are half full. Its just D2 all over again and we're wasting our time here.
Whats the cap PL? Are you gonna be happy with 7 of the next 10 championships with the championship banner now touching the field?
Itd be just getting lame with the program getting a negative perception that it isn't open enough to join the big boys.

Well that's all fine and well, but it also takes money to make money. We don't have it and we won't have it. Until the state realizes it needs to invest more into its universities, this is where we will be. And that's ok. We have success. We have a growing fan base (nation-wide). We are 10 years into this move up. Let's ride it out for awhile. Let's let the BCS/FBS figure out what it's going to do, and jump when the time is right. Forcing it now would be a big mistake. I'm here to support the university in whatever it decides to do and my actions back that up. Do I hope they plan for the future? You bet. But you must also enjoy where you're at as well.

I did see those games. Im also looking at the texas bowl stands right now...and the U of M is loosing a lot of money to put on this show right now. So your saying just because schools have money to throw down the drain that is better for ndsu?
National prestige? We already have it. Im tired of that exposure argument. Its crap.
If you think we would compete with the Big boys of FBS .....you are fooling yourself.

If the State decides to put more funds into higher education, I can assure you it will NOT be for Athletics.
All funding will have to be private. It's incredibly naive to think otherwise.

Yep...that was a great game. Kstate was not the team they were last year. I meant the BCS bowl teams....this years BCS bowl teams. If you think we can compete in that every year I think you are sadly mistaken.
I am for a move if and when the big conferences break off from the rest of FBS. 2nd level of of college football is where we belong.

Yea thats just the problem. Nodak has more money than it knows what to do with it, and the grounds for a national power is on its doorstep......and nothing will be done about it. how isn't this going to become a NW Missouri St?
i agree with the middle part. Itll have to be when the big 5 break off or sooner...if theres any window and NDSU misses it, then its toast.

Becasue there would hopefully be playoffs. Going now is to go into obscurity. Our season would be done right now. Until that shakeup happens...it makes no sense.

I don't think it would take this huge amount of money for NDSU to move into the MAC and be highly competitive. I don't even think that we would need a new stadium.

Because the finances will be entirely different with the big boys gone and taking a large chunk of the money that is currently being spread over the entire BCS/FBS.
FBS smalls will be looking for more teams to fill the void allowing teams such as NDSU MtSU UMt SDSU(?) USD (?) UNH and do I dare say UN_ to have a shot at joining them but to fill that void the FBS schools may need to make some concessions since they will no longer be able to financially support what current model they have.
Along with they probably would institute a playoff perhaps? Since they're the ones trying to get it pushed through now.

Do you think that will be the norm? Nobody stays on top forever. Look at Texas and LSU and FLA. Remember when they were killing everyone?
My talking points are pretty clear. Its money driven now. Any FBS conferences is beneficiary to the MVFC. TV contracts, bowl game payouts, bigger stadium. All help NDSU grow.
Dont bring up bowl game payouts as teams LOSE money in those ventures.
the same guys saying the bowl games suck (they do, i know), arent taking the fact that the same division NDSU is in, has games @ a schools home stadium, that are half full. Its just D2 all over again and we're wasting our time here.
Seems you are basing a lot of you angst towards the fact that many teams dont fill their stadiums. Is that a reason for NDSU to move up?
Whats the cap PL? Are you gonna be happy with 7 of the next 10 championships with the championship banner now touching the field?
If the division is competitive why wouldnt I want that?
Itd be just getting lame with the program getting a negative perception that it isn't open enough to join the big boys.
I think that is a perception that you are try to project when in fact I think its a misguided vision.
Now let me restate what has been posted before but for some reason you move up guys cant comprehend some simple facts.
GT has stated that NDSU is waiting for the BIGs to get settled in what they are going to do. When that happens NDSU will NEED to be ready to make a move depending on the circumstances.
To make a move NDSU has to be INVITED to join a FBS conference. You do understand this right?
Next is FUNDING. How will this move be FUNDED now and in the future? Hint snapping your fingers wont make it happen
Then you have the issue of our stadium. HOW will that be FUNDED?
Many many here arent necessarily opposed to moving up. Its just that those many many people understand the pitfalls and logistics, funding involved to making the move and bring those points up. While your side is pissing and moaning about no people in the opponents stand and youre bored with the competition as a reason to move up. Which really doesnt hold much water in a business sense does it.
Now of course all of this is moot IF you are wanting to move up now. In that case whos going to invite us and where is the money going to come from right now?
-

I think it would only work from a football only perspective, the MAC has had a history of inviting schools for football only. I guess for the MAC it would give them a strong football program, one that would look impressive on TV and could help bring up the conference's power rating.
For NDSU it perhaps our only way into the FBS and it is a conference that we could become competitive in quickly.

Does it really help NDSU overall to buy into a conference that sells out to ESPN to get their games on Wednesday's?? I think this would be a program killer or at least a huge step backwards for NDSU.

Well at least we would be in a conference that actually has its conference games televised...instead of ESPN3 being the best we can get.
I am not exactly happy with our current situation. The MVFC needs to step it up.

gimme a break there was 10 midweek games western michigan and 5 others played 1 game, so I dont see where people think ndsu will have 3 of them they would have 1 a year and 1 every other year at home on a Thursday maybe fbs is a must this is extremely boring indiana state had 2000 people at their place with 2 trucks parked on the sidelines lets become real men

espn3 is kind of lame but honestly with the expansion of it and smart TV's... it may be a pretty good deal within a few years. You'll probably have an ESPN3 icon on your tv by default.
I agree the mac espn primetime Wed night isn't a killer. I checked out Northern Illinois schedule and they play a 12 game regular season (every year) and 3 total games were on Wed Night primetime ESPN2. Of those 3 games, 2 were home games. Then you get the Mac championship in Detroit (Ford Field) in front of a 1/3 empty stadium. (it is on a saturday) But they also went to the Orange Bowl last year and this year it was in Sunny San Diego!
Substituting a few home playoff games for Bowls or mac championship would be ok in my book. And while their early season tv wasn't as good as ours, they made their way on ESPN 6 times. And last time I checked we were trending on twitter during the CC espn game.
