If they go 5-6 but one of those 5 wins is against us, whose season is the failure?

If neither team makes the playoffs they are both failures, of course to SDSU fans any time they beat us their season is a resounding success. ;)

Re: 2009 Recruiting: Quick Reference
sdsu could go 1-10 and as long as they beat us they would think they are good.

Isn't that the point of a rivalry? I remember a year we went 10-1 and that year was a failure.

haha are you kidding me?????????? so ur saying the only point of the season is to beat ur rival??? wow you sound like a SDSU fan. last time i checked we care more about conference championships, playoffs, and nattys than beating our rival.
i'd take 14-1--national champions--and our loss coming from sdsu
over
1-10 with our only win over sdsu

I'm going to have to agree and disagree, and i'll go with its everyones fault, somebody posted earlier that last years Senior class lacked a leader and that IMO is right on, Yes Mertens did not play well all year, and really Roehl was almost non-factor (i know injury) the recievers seemed to be in Walker shock, D-line Hello where the hell were they, play calling umm nope non, and well the kicking game WTF, etc...it was a total team breakdown, but Mertens gits alot of crap because he should have been a leader and wasn't instead his play hindered alot of positives a nice critical 3 and out by our D just to have a INT instantly, talk about taking the wind out of their sails

Fair enough.... one last point he is the only one receiving a paycheck and part of the gate... hence how i would put him high on the blame list..... oooh yeah he also picks his own players..... I done TJ agree to disagree

Perceived success is based on the expectation coming into the season, and that is no different in the land of the jackrabbit. If we expect the Jacks to make the playoffs and they don't, we certainly don't view the season as a success, but rather a disappointment (I hold off on calling a season a failure unless I can really find no positive effects on the program produced). It is also to be noted that each fan has different expectations for a season, hence the different post season perspectives.
As for us beating the Bison making the season a success, I think most Jacks fans would agree with me that beating you guys definitely makes the season better, but it certainly doesn't make it a success if the team doesn't meet our exceed our season expectations. For instance; if we went 1-10 with our only win being against the Bison, 99.9% of SDSU fans would NOT view that as a successful season, but it would be used as a defense mechanism if, for some reason, a Bison fan wanted to "remind" us of that season.

It's always good to see local talent sign up.

Re: 2009 Recruiting: Quick Reference
Seriously, does anybody close to NDSU football know if the coaches are still looking for a QB that can transfer and contribute right away in 2009? I am really surprised this question is not be asked or followed up on by Kolback or any other local media. If for some reason Bohl feels comfortable with where things are at..........
I believe NDSU should be able to do better than Fabry or Jackson.
-
Re: 2009 Recruiting: Quick Reference
I think you are right SD. I don't think there is any way they are not looking for another QB. With Jackson off the team, they don't even have enough bodies to practise.

Re: 2009 Recruiting: Quick Reference
Saw this on rivals today...
Quote:
Howard Pulley greatly benefited from the point guard play of Marcus Williams who lead a transition game that pushed a single digit Pulley lead to 20 plus over the St. Louis Eagles. His pestering defense and creation blew the game wide open. Williams is said to be deciding on football/basketball opportunities at North Dakota State, Northern Iowa, and Minnesota (walk-on).

Marcus Williams could be an outstanding cornerback or wide receiver. In hoops, he could be a shutdown defender who could matchup with the Johnathan Jones types. He is a poor shooter, but I think he would be a good compliment to guys like Drew Lundberg and Nate Zastrow who have different skill sets, especially if he doesn't cost Saul a scholly.
Two very large, very late football recruiting battles going on (Chase Stangel and Marcus Williams) with the Bison and UNI in the mix.

When a player gets a scholarship for football and then plays football and basketball, does his scholarship count against both sport's maximums? I'm guessing it doesn't count against basketball or NDSU and SDSU wouldn't have had football players filling roster holes during transition.

Counts against football. Here's the priority list; the scholarship counts against the first sport played.
Men
Football
Basketball
Ice Hockey
Swimming and Water Polo = Swimming
Swimming or Water Polo or anything else = can be counted in either sport
Women
Basketball
Volleyball
Any other two sports = can be counted in either

I believe Marcus is Northern Iowa bound to play both sports

If that is true it wouldn't be terribly surprising. NDSU loses more recruiting battles in the TC area than they win against UNI, and it is beyond me to understand why.
-
Re: 2009 Recruiting: Quick Reference
I sort of thought we turned it around this year on UNI, but they still are very good at recruiting the TC area. It would have been nice to get this kid...that is for sure.

I am willing to bet that once NDSU gets established in the FCS the battles will swing our way more often. When they look at the 4-4 record in the first full year in the conference it gives NDSU a mediocre appearance. As the years progress and the success continues at this level it will be easier. Thats just what I think.

Re: 2009 Recruiting: Quick Reference
yea our record last year didnt help

Our record is not a huge factor in the desicion of recruits IMO!! Every prospective player knows a program WILL have a down year, most recruits will look at coaching, depth at prospected position (or what position the coaches would like him to play), Majors at the university, type offense/defense etc... I just don't buy into your record being a huge factor of course, if you have been a bottom feeder for serveral years, but we had two 10-1 seasons and going 6-5 in the MVFC last year is nothing to be ashamed of, the kid who picked UNI had something he liked more about their program and University congrats to the Panthers, we took some serious good recruits in 09 from MN that UNI wanted also!! Win some Lose some;)

I have never been able to find confirmation of Marcus Williams committing to Northern Iowa. Can't find anything via google and nada on the PantherNation board. It still seems likely, but it would be a little wierd for an athlete of his caliber to commit with absolutey NO press..
Anybody? Bueller?

I would like to thank OldBison for lighting the fire under Bohl on this one!!!!
Thanks OldBison! looks like NDSU is doing just fine, and the coach at Hopkins had nothing but great things to say about NDSU and their staff.

Hopefully we have a pipeline developing? Not exactly a football powerhouse, but I'll gladly trade that for some basketball recruits :).

He was all set for Northern Iowa a month ago, but obviously something changed.
