Fyp for you. They get a G5 product at FCS prices. No way they want to lose that
I remember when UNC was applying to the BSC and all they talked about was the Denver media market. That didn't work out so well. No one in Denver knows they exist.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
IMO sac state’s fate will be telling. If they waltz into FBS as an independent, all the "split" talk is BS. If the "pending" power split is real, they’ll block sac state from moving up

ESPN article on Sac St was crowing about how they sit in a "top 20" media market, even though they've got shit for a fanbase, and went a crappy 3-9 in Big Sky.
In spite of all this, believe we would have been invited to MW without Sankey/P4 involvement.
P4 splitting off would be bittersweet. It would improve our odds of joining G4/5/6 (whatever remains). But it would also almost permanently slam the door on dreams of competing for a championship at the top level. There won't be much of a path from G6 to P2/4 status after that.
If (when?) P2/4 leave, the vast majority of the money will as well. What is left will feel like FCS+ at best, with slightly better competition. It will be like rooting for farm system teams that are merely feeders into the P2/P4.
It increasingly looks like the plan is for them to take most of the basketball money as well. Rumors of power basketball conferences splitting from NCAA. That would hit nearly all NCAA sports outside the power conferences. Also rumors floating now that MW will invite a few non-football top basketball schools to shore up that side of things.
Power conference money/greed and NIL are destroying the college sports system. The giants want every crumb now and don't wish to revenue share with NCAA.
If they take basketball money, I'm not sure how the other sports and divisions continue to have championships. 85% of the NCAA money is from the men's basketball tournament. A lot of that money pays for the D2 wrestling tournament and D3 lacrosse tournaments. FCS is funded some from that pot, but probably less than many others.

I feel the tea leaves are reversed. P4 votes will likely influence/control the outcome.
If Sac St waltz in, that's because the power conference ADs on that committee have decided they no longer care, and plan to split off soon, imo. That could happen as soon as the next CFP contract gets negotiated (2026/2027).

I realize this biz is cutthroat, but that would be too low imo. You’d be letting them join something you were about to blow up, lol, with big implications across the board for sac state, big sky etc. I don’t think they’d go that low, and it might create legal problems

Pretty good interview with the P4 commissioners on today's Ruthless podcast. Starts at about the 50 minute mark. Discussion about NIL, trying to maintain college athletics, trying to get a federal framework.

It’s interesting that TSU is now too good for CUSA, but it’s even more interesting that SDSU appears uninterested in moving up. Can they not afford it?

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the move.
It's simply an honest question. We'll need more talent if we do this. That talent is costing more each season. It's a concern.

Best way to get more talent is increase scholarships. Right now we have 63. FBS is 85. If you opt into the settlement, it increases to 105. We already have an endowment that perpetually covers all 63, so increasing it would be a breeze
The tougher part would be increasing coaching salaries but it's very do-able

Thanks, good info. I was actually thinking about the NIL money. Not sure where that's gonna come from?

Sacramento is averaging 9,000 fans a game in a 15,000 capacity stadium as a 3 year temporary home of the Oakland. The As are currently above 500 too. Big time market

They aren't really "deserving" of FBS status, but the same could be said of a few others like Kennesaw.
Conference invite for them may hinge on how the media companies perceive things. The ESPN article proclaiming that they were a "top 20" media market irked me a bit, because that is what CUSA crowed about when adding Kennesaw (Atlanta "market").
The Basketball angle though is a good move on their part, and something we should be doing. There is no FCS/Iaa level for basketball, if you succeed in that sport, there almost instant recognition and opportunity (see Gonzaga and others). D1 Basketball success has been a proven path for moving up the conference ladder, and something we've sorely neglected. Make the tourney every year and win a few games to get to Sweet 16, and there will be interest.

Notable quotes ...
"With five departing schools triggering an estimated $100 million in exit fees, the remaining members are poised for a financial windfall. Those funds could support NIL programs, facility upgrades, and staff retention. Combine that with upcoming media rights renegotiations in 2026, and the MWC’s new core has real leverage to boost exposure and revenue."
"The conference now has the opportunity to grow deliberately. Schools like Montana, Montana State, North Dakota State, or UC Davis could bring strong fan bases, football tradition, and geography-friendly options for future membership, helping create a fresh and competitive conference landscape."
No mention of Tarleton, SDSU or Sac State fwiw

The plan from the get go was to add two football only schools in the CST zone. The first invitations went to NIU and Toledo. Toledo does not appear to be interested. The Montanas are in the Mountain time zone. Probably not the add they are looking for because they already have 5 schools in the MST. With Davis in the conference and soon to be transitioning to FBS, Sac State is very unlikely. To me Tarleton seems unlikely. That could leave NDSU in a good spot.
The point to remember, is the MW already has 9 for football and 10 for olympic sports so they really don't have to do anything. Also, the MW and Pac have been negotiating over the exit and poaching fees but there is no guarantee they will settle. If this thing goes to court that will take quite awhile to play out. In that case the MW will almost certainly stand pat.
I would personally favor a NDSU football only invitation but I do wonder if you guys will still be interested in a much different MW than you wanted to join before.

No idea but Big Mountain guys seem to think NDSU would accept immediately. I find it interesting that these guys never bring up SDSU, which tells me they (bunnies) must not be interested

Re: A new and better FBS thread
I think the School would accept if offered. I was just wondering how you all personally feel about that possible move. No Boise, CSU or USU any more. Wyoming is the last northern school in what is primarily a southwestern based conference in 2026.
Just speculation on my part but I believe the new tv deal will be around 2.5 per for full members with an 80 percent cut for football only schools. That is around 2.8 million but like no games on ESPN..Fox and CBS with maybe some streaming on Paramount +. Mostly night time starts for football.
If the MW prevails in the poaching and exit fee suits or at least makes out pretty well, UNLV and AFA will get 24.5 percent of the total. NV, NM, SJSU and Wyoming would each get 11 percent. Hawaii, 7%. The represents a significant cash influx for those 7 schools but none of that money would go to UTEP, Davis or GCU. An school added going forward would not get a share of that.

Leaving the MVFC for the MWC will be a hard decision. No Boise, CSU are big deals especially since we'll be losing the ability to play Murray State, Northern Iowa and Indiana State.
However, when we weigh the pro's they narrowly outweigh the con's.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Talk about MWC expansion always seems to love the idea of the Montanas and I’m not sure why. Is a move even practical for both universities?

Re: A new and better FBS thread
So..a lot like getting to play SJSU, Nevada, NM and UTEP. I can see how that would tilt the scales.

I’m not entirely sure there is much difference for a program like NDSU at the top of the FCS or somewhere within the middle of FBS.
Not being FBS doesn’t protect us from the portal or NIL just as being FBS doesn’t protect us either.
Still gonna lose players, still going to have to have NIL, etc.

I thought the whole point of moving up was (i) NDSU has won most of the FCS titles in the last decade or whatever, so it’s sort of obnoxious not to move up if there’s a higher level to play at (ask Sam Herder how he feels lol), and (ii) although Boise/CSU etc are no longer in the conference, playing them would at least be an option in the MWC, and right now it is most certainly not. I have no idea what admin is thinking -- or the major boosters for that matter -- but as recently as a week or so ago AD ML still seemed pretty focused on playing FB at a higher level … I don’t see a P2 split coming

Agree on the ML take. His most recent comments are much more clear that NDSU wants to go FBS.
