They have a consulting firm crunching the numbers and the tv people are actively involved.
This may take awhile.
Also, other conferences may well come a knocking too..Who knows.
It might streamline things if they have their people talk to my people. My people will tell their people to read this thread and we'll be cutting the MVFC patches off our jerseys before Monday's practice.

Also I have never in my life seen a school's financials gone over with a fine tooth comb then what I am seeing with NDSU. The number McFeely quoted from ML to go full MWC was $44 million, Brown is getting $50 million from some source. That is a big gap, nobody seems to know what the number for just football is but it's less then both the numbers I've quoted. All-sports MWC is a real commitment, you are traveling a lot more and all of our coaches are now operating in a league that has a very different pay scale than the Summit.
Those numbers sound ballpark right to me. $50m would match Wyoming budget. Its still a lot less than schools like UNLV and AFA spend. A lot of the costs will come from FBS requirements for additional scholarships, adding sports and coaches. Its not only travel. Football only would reduce the travel costs some, but that isn't the whole picture. Have to be ready for additional costs coming out of the House settlement and paying players directly too. I'd imagine the fine tooth comb part of this may be coming from President Cook. It just means they are being diligent and making sure it will all pass muster with the state too. They can't just say yes and figure it out later.

It’s important to remember that there are many reasons why the numerator on that equation will increase as well.

I'm sure NDSU is doing that math as well, and it may even be part of the discussions with MW in terms of what they will offer, and what the distributions are expected to look like. These decisions always come down to money in the end.
NIU is rumored to have been disappointed in what MW offered them, and felt it didn't make sense to leave the MAC. Perhaps their travel costs would have gone up more than the payout. Every school has to do this analysis for themselves.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Reportedly, NIU was concerned about the lawsuit the Pac Who has filed to get rid of the poaching fees and the fact that the MW would not have a guaranteed spot in the CFP. Or in other words they wanted a better deal.

I know..That is a lame reason to stay in the MAC. I still think it is still just negotiating.
Speaking of... The other day Gloria gave an interview on ESPN Honolulu. She was asked about the McMurphy tweet and said "Don't believe everything you read." She also said the MW is slowing down a bit after the frantic first couple of months getting to 8 and adding GCU. They still feel a sense of urgency but their hair is no longer on fire. She said they have a couple of meetings on the schedule and this will take awhile.

Thanks for sharing. Like everything else that happens within public institutions and the entities that govern them she gave a perfectly acceptable answer that said nothing at all.
I do think it will be a few weeks before we hear anything more one way or the other.

The TV contract is up in 2026 and there is no guarantee it will be renewed. Maction is a sure thing

Maybe. It seems like when these rumors turn out to be true, they fire off sooner than that. If our leadership is worth their salt, the financials should already be prepped and ready to present. Part of me thinks if we don't know by Monday the 18th, it's dead in the water.

I would be VERY surprised if there have not already been initial discussions between MW and media partners.
1 - most likely they know the outline and what expected range of payouts would be.
2 - most likely the media partners and/or consultants are providing estimates of media value for various schools that could be added, and this is part of the process of who gets invites normally.
PAC took a break for the purpose of figuring all this out. I suspect MW was ahead of them on this aspect. There have been rumors floating that the next MW contract will have a strong streaming aspect. Not sure if that will be Apple, ESPN+, Amazon, or someone else. PAC previously was close to deals with either Apple or Amazon for streaming, before it all fell apart.

Right, none of the G6 will get a guaranteed spot, though some conferences will have a higher probability than others. PAC has the best shot at getting the CFP bid on a regular basis. NIU would have significantly improved their odds of a CFP birth by moving to MW imo. Most years, MAC will not get significant consideration. Thus logically, it must have really come down to the money and additional travel costs.

It’s coming down to the fact that their other sports would be homeless. School has happily been in the MAC for 51 years. That’s a hell of a bridge to burn and football doesn’t run the school like it does at NDSU.

That is the most obvious reasoning. Football only for them meant having to find a new conference for the other sports. When you’ve been in a bus league for 50 years you’re not going to jump into another conference for Olympic sports that would mean increased travel.

Either you've got this wrong or Wikipedia does. Niu left the summit league in 1994 for the horizon league. And they left the horizon league in 1997 for the mac. (Both confereneces had different names then, but its the same charter).
Your point about it being a long time still stands. 27 years is a long time. It's just not 51.
Another aside, if football doesnt run niu, what does? Cause they suck ass at basketball

It's actually much more complicated than that. NIU first joined the MAC back in 1975, but they hopped around a bunch from 1986-96.
1920 - joined the IIAC(Illinois Intercollegiate Athletic Conference; later Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference)
1966 - left for the Midwestern Conference
1972 - went independent
1975 - joined the MAC for the first time
1986 - women join the North Star Conference(later absorbed into Mid-Con/Summit)
1986 - men go independent(again)
1990 - all olympic sports fully join the Mid-Con(Summit)
1993 - joined Big West for football
1994 - olympic sports moved to Midwestern Collegiate Conference(Horizon)
1996 - football independent
1997 - finally back to MAC(olympic + football)
So over the last 49 seasons(1975-2024), NIU was in the MAC for 37 of them(1975-1985*, 1997-2024).
*I used the beginning of the academic year for all the dates. So the 1985 date here is actually the 1985-86 season.

Which takes us full circle. More travel/costs and not enough of a revenue jump to outweigh that for NIU.
Travel costs and money are two of the biggest drivers of movement (or in this case nonmovement) within the G5/6. And really in the end, money drives all decisions in FBS. The numbers just weren't big enough for NIU to jump.

Yeah that was my b for skimming the Wikipedia page lol
Not to detract from the point that the major problem would be the homelessness of their non-football sports. That is how you divide an athletic department. All their other sports are just fine where they are at. You gonna blow things up for a conference that might not exist or at least turn into CUSA in 5 years?
No…

MW may be weakened, but no bloody way they turn into the train wreck that CUSA did  They have been avoiding schools like NMSU for a reason.

Lol we are less than three months removed from a significant amount of people speculating that the mountain west was going to be disbanded…

Many on here had given the MWC a death sentence, but much of that might have been wishful thinking from the FCS forever crowd. It is very hard to kill a conference
If you believe Matt Brown, Summit is already backfilling …

Summit will always be looking for members but not sure what that has to do with NDSU FB going to the MWC. We wouldn't be leaving the Summit for our other sports.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Ut arlington plz.
I'd love to go watch ndsu mbb lose then never go to a game ever again.
It seems like our basketball team miraculously achieves a new all time low every single year.

NIU football goes to MWC
NDSU has to stay in MVFC

They would join the Horizon long before the Summit.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Here are Izzo and McFeely talking about the Mountain West possibilities: Hot Mic with Dom Izzo on X: "From the show this morning, @McFeely_Inforum and @DomIzzoWDAY discuss NDSU potentially moving to the Mountain West. https://t.co/pu2AUbfVrj" / X
One point that they made was that the non-conference schedules are going to be insane so I went and checked what the future membership has for non-conference (home games in bold)
UTEP: Nebraska, Tennessee, Colorado State, Southern Utah
Nevada: SMU, Minnesota, Troy, Georgia Southern, Oregon State
UNLV: Houston, Utah Tech, Kansas, Syracuse
SJSU: Sacramento State, Kennesaw State, Washington State, Stanford
New Mexico: Montana State, Arizona, Auburn
I stopped there. Make of it what you will. Definitely an upgrade in competition though.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Playing upwards of 3 P4 teams annually (albeit on the road) is a huge upgrade for the Bison and a chance to really elevate the program. Plus I do think the remaining MWC teams are still on average a pretty considerable step up from MVFC competition, especially week in/week out.

Then have NDSU try to run them out of town afterwards? Felt so bad for Logan after she broke the Entz story, just for doing her job. AD ML was beyond butt-hurt at that one.

That one could go either way for me.
I think we're close, but less convinced TP knows and tipped his hand after watching it.
It is possible we are one of 2 or 3 candidates under discussion by MW. The recent quasi denial by Gloria was interesting. She essentially said the press/media reports were inaccurate.
