So, if all the chatter about SEC/B1G is serious, get us in the door, then throw away the key. Adding the Montanas, SDSU, or anyone else is not worth losing CFP access.
I hate to tell you this. These types of schools are going to loose access to the CFP regardless of the MW decision on NDSU. Also, if NDSU stays FCS they also will not have access to the CFP. If the G6 just becomes FCS, then the FCS becomes DII. Do you want to be DII?

Yeah - I’m not sure it was intentional, but even if BUT or AND were used there, its about what i would expect Larson to say at this point…

Go back and read what I said again. At no point did I suggest NDSU should not move. I just don't want to drag more of FCS with us if it jeopardizes CFP access.

Ok, I didn't see you say anything about other schools. My understanding is there is just one spot they're looking to fill so I don't see why there would be any dragging.

Others have been suggesting we could "lobby" to bring SDSU along, and there was discussion of others a page or two back.
I conceptually like the idea of the Montana/xDSU gang of 4, but not if that jeopardizes cfp. And that seems to continue coming up as a rumor from press reports.

Understand. I haven't listened to the guy who was on 1660 today, but from a recap I heard it sounded pretty clear there was one spot. I'll have to go find it now to make sure I understood correctly.

I'm saying if this rumor is legit, and we do get in, we really should not lobby to add any more FCS schools later, even if it gave us regional rivals. A split may happen regardless, but the risk/tradeoff there is simply not worth it. Let the Montanas and Jacks stay behind. If a split happens, could bring them up after.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Sure. I honestly don't think NDSU has any intention of lobbying for anyone else, but that's just my opinion. There are actually advantages to NOT have any of the neighbors join us.

I was thinking the same thing. Like when we poach their best players.

This is the way. No G5 recruiting competition from Chicago to Boise, from Tulsa to Canada. Dominate that recruiting footprint and you have the best G5 program in the country.

Much easier when you have 85 scholarships instead of 63. And I'm confident we will see FBS jump up to 100 which is crazy
This is on top of full cost of attendance, Alston payments, and a growing collective
The National exposure will open up some doors too and being the main central time zone team helps with TV scheduling

I envision a different approach. Let's poach their fanbase.
I would wager most of us have another college team they favor. Sure were all Bison fans but most of us find ourselves also rooting for other (FBS) teams as well. Let's become "The Dakotas FBS Team". If this is out opportunity to transition to FBS let's use any opportunity to send the message that becoming a Bison fan is compatible with being a Jacks (Yotes or Sioux) fan. We can be their favorite 'big team'. Let's let them know we are excited to welcome them into our fanbase. Maybe, just maybe we can even start to cheer for them in their FCS journey.
Difficult task, but absolutely worth the effort. We will need more fans willing to financially support our FBS journey.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
If this happens, I pledge to join the G&G collective and we'll also up our support through Teammakers. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I currently put in a moderate amount to G&G and nothing to Teammakers, and I’m the biggest NDSU fan I know. Give me a reason to give more and I gladly will. I’m not going to donate extra thousands a year just to watch us punk Illinois State. There are A LOT of bison fans like us.
Bigger question probably is how many companies in the region would start/increase their corporate dollars?

When McMurphy was on 1660 yesterday, he verbatim said that the Mountain West was only wanting to add ONE team, football-only, as they wanted to get football membership to nine teams to allow for a full 8-game conference schedule. The more I've thought about this, fuck the other regional rivals...there is no reason why we need to allow little brothers to drag along holding our coat-tails, we need to strike while the iron is hot and do what is best for the future of NDSU football, which is immediately accepting a MWC invite, if it indeed comes to fruition.

I will allow this only if they get a Bison tattoo… TAB?

100%. You think any of the other Dakotas would “wait for us?”

I think there is a 0.1% chance that they have only 1 spot to fill. Not having a conference championship game in the cfp era is bad business and basically no shot that plays out.
What they are actually saying is they are only interested in ndsu at this time. Other schools will also be added before 2026.

At this point we shouldnt advocate for others. The only G6 school in the upper midwest is a huge selling point in recruiting in my opinion.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Screw SDSU and the Montanas in this scenario. If NDSU ends up getting an invite and accepts, SDSU would just be a FCS school that hopes we schedule them. That would be funner.

There is one big reason why they would want to stop at 9, $$$. G5(6) media contracts don't get bigger with one or two more schools. With every school added you are diluting the pot. SEC, BIG, etc they can demand large amounts of new $$ per additional school. G5s simply can't. Their media deals are essentially the same whether they have 9 schools or 11.

I think you are wildly underestimating the financial contribution of having a conference championship football game. Without a conference championship game to win it becomes incredibly unlikley that a team from your conference ever gets the g5 autobid.

That is a good point. I could also see a slight increase in media rights for having that game be a staple event at the end of the season for a network to promote.
Edit: Also, adding here instead of a new post - SDSU may well find an opportunity into the MWC if/when the PAC makes their final moves.

Didn't the NCAA lift the requirement to have 12 teams in order to play a conference championship game quite a while ago? The Big 12 played conference championship games with 10 members for several years.

Maybe you're right, but that is not what the guy interviewed on 1660 said.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
They are going to add another school and then go to their media partners and get the lay of the land. That is where these conferences are at now, they don't operate wth a blank check like the Big 10 and SEC.
Also I have never in my life seen a school's financials gone over with a fine tooth comb then what I am seeing with NDSU. The number McFeely quoted from ML to go full MWC was $44 million, Brown is getting $50 million from some source. That is a big gap, nobody seems to know what the number for just football is but it's less then both the numbers I've quoted. All-sports MWC is a real commitment, you are traveling a lot more and all of our coaches are now operating in a league that has a very different pay scale than the Summit.

With the addition of GCU, I really don't think the MW would look to you as a full member. 9 works for Oly sports. They might consider Davis or Sac State because they in the footprint and provide warm weather sites for baseball, softball etc. Other than that I think it is football only and just the one add. I also don't think they are just talking to NDSU about a possible football invite. They are talking to other schools and have been all along. I think you have a good of a chance as anybody but the MW is really going to dig down into all the parameters they have set as far as expansion. They have a consulting firm crunching the numbers and the tv people are actively involved.
This may take awhile.
Also, other conferences may well come a knocking too..Who knows.
