All sports...Davis
Oly sports only...Grand Canyon, St Mary's
Football only.. none.

Do you feel that if we have a 'football only' attitude that it makes us a less desirable candidate?

Hard to argue with Davis. You could have said “anyone with a basketball team that has a pulse” and I would have said “fair.”
Still curious on your “why”…

I think you would be 'more' desirable as football only if the MW is your goal. Travel costs for olympic sports is a prominent concern for the MW members. This is not a collection of really wealthy schools.

That's interesting, I as simply assumed that a conference wanted 'complete' members.

Davis already sponsors all the MW sports. It would balance the MW with 4 in the PST and 4 in the Mountain zone and Hawaii as the lone outlier. Davis is a very large school with jillions of alums. They have a very sturdy endowment. It is 13 miles from the Sacramento airport so the travel is easy. It is a warm weather school in California. Their football stadium is small but they can expand it to an average MW size quickly enough. Their basketball gym is not large but not tiny either. I don't know if they are interested or maybe looking at the Pac Who conference, so it probably isn't in the cards. Sac State would be a fallback option but Davis is the better add imho..
I have no real idea who or what the MW presidents have in mind for possible expansion. Gloria does not have a vote. Her staff does the vetting and may make recommendations, but the presidents decide everything.

Now that they have 8 full members they meet the NCAA requirement to be a conference. At this point, they can be as creative as they wish. They can also just stand pat if they choose. They have had affiliate members before. Hawaii for football. WAZZU is an affiliate for baseball this season. Sac State was an affiliate for baseball in the past. Colorado College is in with women's soccer, only.
At the moment they may be looking at the CST zone to perhaps add some product for their tv deals. I think they do want to add at least one school to help with basketball. There are a lot of those in the west. 9 schools who play football is really ideal. That gives you a true round robin 8 game conference schedule. 9 or 10 works very well for basketball and the other sports.

Like I said, I agree that Davis makes the most sense. You’ve mostly answered other questions by basically saying that a strong national football brand alone is not enough for you. Agree to disagree. :)

Davis is a Fix'r upper p4 school. They seem like such a slam dunk candidate that the mwc will probably offer Tennessee tech.
You know, gotta get that knoxville-nashville media market. Cookeville, TN (population 37,000) is around a hundred miles from both knoxville and nashville! Think of that sweet tennessee media market.
Its got everything they desire, eastern time zone, $$$$ media market, tiny town no ones ever heard of 100 miles from a city everyones heard of, school no ones ever heard of, small enrollment, vaguely D1 with no name recognition. It checks all the boxes.

I don't believe that a strong, national brand football program is 'not' enough. I also do not believe you are out of the running, either. Football only is an easy sale because it just means 4 schools each year coming to Fargo. I think all of the members already charter flights for football. Every other season you would have a very long air travel day to get to Honolulu. Hawaii would be in the same boat. That would be your schools' problem but not an issue for the rest of the conference.
Football is your best calling card but not your only one. Gloria always talks about fit first. The presidents who decide all this stuff are academics first and sports fans second. I believe you are a land grant, tier 1 school. In that regard you have some things in common with different MW universities. That could help and it certainly won't hurt.
AS football only you wouldn't be involved with the other sports and you would not receive a share of any of the basketball credits and any other revenue from oly sports. You would only get a partial share of the tv deals. You would have to cough up 5 million bucks to move to FBS and sponsor at least 6 million dollars worth of scholarships. You are already D-1 for your other sports. It is the FBS designation that is really pricey.
I think your president would want answers to various questions. Do you really want to be in the MW for football only? Would rather be in the Pac? They will likely be the stronger football conference. Is it worth it to be in any conference as football only at the FBS level. The MW is unlikely to be in contention for a spot in the CFP most years. The Pac probably does have a chance but G5 is G5. It ain't easy top get there.

…
…it’s not enough to make the top of your list, and you’ve also said that you would prefer not to have a football only member at all, so not to split hairs, but that’s what makes it “not enough” in your opinion (I understand this is just your opinion and you’re not a decision-maker).
I can tell you’ve put a lot of thought into this and I think you make good points, I just don’t agree, and I hope you’re wrong. :)

Re: A new and better FBS thread
So what if.....We would get an invite to join a conference in FBS contingent on being all in in all sports?
Do the other sports have the desire to move up to the next level as well? (wrestling would be a lateral move of course)
Are we in the position to quickly make that decision?

I, personally, would prefer not to do football only but it may well be in the very best interests of the MW conference to do just that. I would certainly defer to their thinking..They have reportedly engaged with NIU and Toledo and I believe they have also approached a couple of CUSA schools to gauge interest. I assume they have also touched base with you and SDSU. What makes the most sense to you or me is not the key component here. The MW doesn't have to do anything.
I do think they have some plans though, so who knows.

What do you mean by "move up"? Face better opponents?
The only new requirement for the other sports would be additional travel, and the 90% scholarship requirement coming up in 2027. The FBS scholarship requirement for 16 sports would apply regardless of whether we join MW for all sports or "football only." So the other sports would have a better/tougher schedule and gain additional scholarships. If I'm a good coach, I want this. Maybe if I'm scared of better competition, I don't.

Doesn't matter what they want. This is a football university. If football requires the other sports to march off a cliff, we will hear the marching.
If a coach objects, just fire them.

This is what I was asking. If we get an invite, do we control our own destiny? Or can those inside our own camp sabotage this?

I hope not, and think the only argument they could make would be budget oriented. If we have the money, there is no good argument against. I suppose they could argue excessive travel and "student athlete welfare", but that's lame. That came up for schools like Stanford, but ultimately wasn't a winning argument.

Virtually any FBS situation is better than the summit and would likely include pay raises to go along with better recruiting and competition. So if have a hard time seeing any individual coaches “going against it”. At the end of the day football pays the bills and if you’re curious what might happen in your scenario, one can find out by undermining leadership wherever they work and see what happens. Making a move like this also would likely include more scholarships for the non football sports instead of less, so it really would be a net benefit for all.
The answer is much more simple, all possible situations have been vetted and we would be ready to make a decision in pretty short order. And unless it’s a situation where a conference wanted to withhold payments from us but still wanted us to join, I’d have to assume the answer is yes.

If you aren’t depressed enough about still being in the FCS pick your favorite site/app and take run through FCS scores. Tell me those schools don’t get you pumped up for big time football!!!!!!!

Re: A new and better FBS thread
So if last night's game doesn't draw the attention of MWC or MAC commissioners, I don't think anything will.
Gloria & Goeff should be in a bidding war over NDSU & SDSU this week.
The thing is, they are guaranteed one of those nail biters every season! If that ain't good TV, what is?
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
I'm curious what the viewership numbers will be. Georgia was handling Texas and I don't think any other games were nailbiters. Casual fans may have tuned in to our game.

Even sweeter when that rival is the defending series champion and currently rated at #1!

Re: A new and better FBS thread
I did not see the game. Just saw the score.
I have no doubt that top FCS teams can make the transition for football. Many have. Hard to say who the MW is targeting at this moment. Lots of discussions about lots of scenarios taking place. But you do have an outstanding football program.

ECU just fired Mike Houston, JMU’s old coach…

Not a fan of Beavers?

Re: A new and better FBS thread
The Beavers poaching MW schools makes for strange bedfellows
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Also, OSU and WAZZU are suing the MW to get out of the poaching fees they agreed to a few months back.. FBS is not the most pleasant place these days. Pretty cutthroat..

A new and better FBS thread
I agree Heffray if FBS conferences really want eyeballs they should understand the impact of a program like NDSU can deliver on the national stage.

Nice to be agreed with. It doesn’t seem to be a point of agreement with conference commissioners…

I agree but for some reason that doesnt seem to be enough. With all the positives that NDSU brings to the table(in our minds) what is the hold up? All I can think of is location.

Location + FCS stigma causing some conferences to think they’re too good to be the one that brings up an FCS school imo.
