College presidents pick conference mates.

I like the addition..Nevada was in the WAC with them for a few years..MST school to boot.

NDSU to be the stand in football only for Pac-12

Pretty sure it’s going to be UConn though. PAC views themselves as too elite to call up a FCS team and likely still trying to sway Memphis with Texas St as their backup choice.

McMurphy on 365 sports
- Texas St top target for MW, Tarleton fallback option
- Texas St wants PAC, but PAC still trying to get AAC schools first.

I'm pretty much done with this at this point. I'd these are the teams behind considered, we will never ever move up.

Reading online comments, nobody in the MVC is happy Tarelton is being considered. It's really quite embarrassing and they are in the stages of looking like Conference USA

All sports is dead but football only is possible. If they get Toledo and NIU, we could backfill football only in the MAC or maybe the MW would take 4 football only members? We may just need to bite the bullet and go to the crappy CUSA
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
A possibility but unlikely. Once they get another full member they will have 9 for football. That works all day..They could then a non football school, St Mary's, anyone? and have 9 for basketball. That also works all day.

He doesn't care. Neither does the conference
University presidents are odd ducks. Most of them suck

Man idk Tarleton would do some pretty bad things to what’s left of the brand.
Academically I’m not sure they’re a real college.

He might, he isn't a university president.
I just don't get that move, they have zero DI success and are located in a tiny town outside of the Dallas. It is like adding a school just because they are in Texas. UTEP I got, that was the obvious move with their location and history. Texas State as well, established DI school in the middle of a number of major metro areas.

True, but our friend is clearly a hoops guy. Is Tarleton good at hoops? I know nothing about them. Guessing they're not R1
Imagine 10 people, each with varied grievances and purported causes, trying to choose from a list of diverse and talented candidates. Often times the choice represents compromise more than reason

Seems that way, or at least they told SBC that according to Thamel. They seem to be leaving the door to PAC open though.

We beat them a few years ago in hoops, that is about all I know. We have bigger impact in the Minneapolis market then they do in DFW, never once heard them mentioned when I have been in Dallas or from people I know in Dallas.

That shows the conference lost it's luster. The short term higher TV payout divided by less teams isn't enough because they won't get much when it's time to renew
PAC 12 now has Gonzaga. That's huge and boosts the whole perception as a P5 league and it will take 90% of the TV revenue
I mean Texas State really isn't that big of a deal. One would think it would be easy but they view it as a lateral move. the MW may need to grab Sam Houston State since they apparently want to be Texas bus league
The whole "access to Texas" is easy. Recruit it like NDSU does

Re: A new and better FBS thread
I really don't understand the hate for Tarleton State.
They have higher enrollment than NDSU.
They have a bigger stadium than NDSU.
They have higher attendance than NDSU.
NDSU won our first FCS title in our 4th year after completing our D1 transition. We were once the new guy nobody had heard of. Why are you hating on one of the few schools that's actively trying to make themselves better?

Yeah they will change their mind now they can play Gonzaga at home every year. That as big as it gets
Or they could play Tarleton State
Hmmmm let me think

Because they have done nothing, do I really need to say that multiple times. We were beating MAC and Big 10 schools at this point in our transition.

Not doubting they are a good program with good facilities. It's just nobody knows who they are and they haven't even proven anything in the FCS yet
Of course they are drawing well. They moved up from D2 and have a new stadium
I mean enrollment is 100 higher than us. Our attendance is based on a weak schedule where we win almost every game with NFL ticket prices. Give us good games and we sell out with a waiting list. It's not our transition years anymore
Their athletic budget was 7.8 million in 2019. We are at 30 million with a goal to hit 40

There are also some reports that their offer was a red herring

I’ll bite on the obvious troll job
$20M athletic budget
Actual butts in seats is far less than NDSU
No tradition or history or fan base
$40M institutional endowment
Literally 0 name recognition or brand

Texas press is naturally making the case for Tarleton

If attendance is your concern, Tarleton’s average of 18,697 fans in 2023 was the fifth-best in FCS and more than current Texas FBS schools UTEP (18,160), North Texas (17,761), and Sam Houston (8,298).
I just hope that maybe there’s another shoe to drop yet with MW. This week has not started well.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
I kind of wonder if they floated them out to put some pressure on Texas State, which obviously didn't work.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Without singling out anybody, the responses to my post about Tarleton St sure show a lot of insecurity. Calling me a troll says everything. They're basically us from 20 years ago. Big difference is low/mid tier FBS learned not to schedule good FCS teams so Tarleton hasn't had a chance to get those wins like we did. I still have no understanding why people here hate on a school that wants to be good.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Not sure I have ever agreed with McFeely more than what his thoughts are about the current state of where NDSU is at today on his podcast. It is becoming 1995 all over again, our big game and season is UND and SDSU. He listed off the 2012 top 15 FCS schools...you had great programs from all over the country and now it is just the Dakota schools and Montana schools...I guess Central Arkansas as well who will probably go FBS soon. This not why went DI, it was to compete with who we thought our peers were, on a national level and that just isn't the case anymore.

You’re saying NDSU in 2004 deserved to get looks from the mountain west? Lol gtfoh
Who’s calling it hate? Between NDSU leadership and mountain west decision making, Tarleton is about the only party not catching disdain here lol honestly I’d say the feeling towards Tarleton is jealousy more than anything. Must be nice to have leadership with vision.
Obvious troll is obvious

They are not us from 20 years, not even close. There is really nothing like us, a school that langiushed in a shit filled division for decades because we had cowards as leaders who had zero vision. At least Chapman got us out of that mess.
I have no hate for Tarleton, they just have done nothing and if you want my respect you go out and win. That is all I ask, I am not going to fawn all over them because they are a Texas school with some potential.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Just a guess..Hawaii becomes an all sports member which gets the MW to 8. Then sit back for awhile and see what pops up.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
I'm sure the usual FCS Forever crowd will always find an excuse for not moving up or not wanting a particular conference when we all know NDSU can't be choosy.
