Re: A new and better FBS thread
If Boise State wants access to the CFP so badly why don’t they just team up with WSU, OSU, us, SDSU, SDSU, Colorado state and UNLV.
That conference is getting the autobid every time and making considerably more money.

No it’s actually about the amount of money the school is going to bring in via eyeballs. Performance on the field doesn’t mean anything if you don’t bring in viewers!

Because Mountain West teams can’t afford to leave……. Have you not been paying attention?

They can, they just have to wait. If the PAC gets to keep their $100M in assets that would more than help pay for schools to jump.
Much more feasible than a three conference sub-subdivision that they’re proposing. As if there isn’t a million and one reasons that will never happen.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
This attempt at wild deal making by WasSU and OrSU to try to save and rebuild the PAC will do nothing but affirm they were the coattails of the PAC12 and left behind for good reason.

At least they are trying and thinking outside the box. That's far beyond what their commissioner ever did.

Feels more like the bargaining phase of grief progression. As long as uni presidents have the final say this'll never happen.

If you're a "five stage" guy, DABDA, yeah, I'd agree.

I don't disagree. Greed and incompetence led to desperation and the situation they are in. Plenty of poor leadership to go around.

Then why NDSU? I don’t think that’s a money play, that has to be a level of competition play, no?

Trying hard not to look through green and yellow glasses here ... in a promotion/relegation system I think NDSU and even SDSU are perfect candidates to draw eyeballs. NDSU especially. A large number of college football fans know of NDSU's success, it's a story that can be discussed ad nauseam by reporters and game coverage, and "eveyone" wants to see if NDSU can truly make it with the "big boys". What better way to prove that than in this model? Honestly it's almost reality TV which audiences eat up.

That's a lot of what's dragging this out I believe. The PAC-2 don't officially have control of the conference yet.
The departing PAC members would love to just vote to disband it, split up the remaining assets, and take their NCAA tourney credits with them. I'm pretty sure that won't be the outcome, but I'm not sure if the PAC-2 will keep everything either.
With this kind of money in stake, it will take some time in court to resolve. The real risk for PAC-2 is the court proceedings drag out and force them to make a sub-optimal choice for next year. Most of the "good" outcomes for PAC-2 are likely to create opportunities for NDSU also in my opinion.

The part that's being overlooked is the giant debt the PAC-12 is on the hook for. Something like $50 million from a media overpayment?? That's also going to complicate things.

Murthy said the two schools have been trying to get a better understanding of the Pac-12’s current assets and liabilities — assets that include media rights payments, NCAA tournament units and College Football Playoff revenue. Liabilities include debt owed to Comcast and fallout from a legal dispute with the Holiday Bowl.
Part of the reason the two schools took legal action against the Pac-12 conference and commissioner George Kliavkoff earlier this month was to gain clarity regarding the financial condition of the league.
“We’ve got to have that full picture,” Schulz said. “I don’t think it is going to take us months to get the full picture (of assets and liabilities, and potential partnerships). I am optimistic that in the next 30 days or so we’re going to have a pretty decent idea of a lot of this and that will help our decision-making.”
Quote:
Asked about a promotion/relegation proposal for western FBS football teams that originated with Boise State associate athletic director Michael Walsh, administrators declined to discuss it specifically. Barnes said he believes there will likely be more examples of unequal revenue distribution models within conferences, leagues contracting and/or a pure relegation model in the future of college sports.
That “will take place, I think,” Barnes said. “I think that’s coming. … We see it working in a similar fashion (with the Premier League) in Europe, and, certainly, it’s worthy of our study.”

It is coming out of the final media rights payment

In theory, Texas St could also be in play, but they are at the bottom of SBC, and probably not a first choice. They have a reasonable fanbase and stadium, but have not been good on the field. Just hired UIW's coach, and maybe better this year. They knocked off Baylor and show signs of improving.
Went and double checked, with the departure of SMU to ACC, there's only 6 G5 in Texas.
CUSA: SHSU, UTEP
SBC: Texas St
AAC: UTSA, UNT, Rice
Of those, I'd say UTSA or UNT most likely. UNT is mediocre.
Texas State has one the one thing that most of the recent Texas move ups don't have. They are a large traditional growing university in a true college town where a big chunk of their students live on or close to campus. They have an upper G5 level basketball facility and a football stadium that while not complete has a beautiful master plan. Obviously their football program has a lot to be desired but they could separate themselves from all their Texas move up siblings by getting into the MWC.

Is getting into the MWC an improvement? In this relegation model, they would likely start out in the lower tier and they would need to get their on field performance up in order to elevate to the upper tier which would likely be an improvement over the SBC. It will come down to money and I just don't see the lower tier of the PAC/MWC relegation idea being a bigger media revenue generator than the SBC. I would also think that there is likely a cost for them to leave the SBC to join the MWC.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
I can prove to you right now that when a vote comes to become a relegation system no president will vote for it.
How?
Look how hard WasSU and OrSU are fighting to keep the "PAC" name and avoid ... relegation ... to the Mountain West.

Oregon St didn't seem overly concerned about that aspect in the Athletic article. Perhaps they should be, but maybe they would also get some type of permanent status, or would at least stack the deck in their own favor there.
Quote:
Chun said he had not studied the Boise State model but wouldn’t believe Oregon State or Washington State would be at risk of relegation in a relegation model because both are top-25 football programs right now.
Unless the PAC-2 end up financially strong enough to poach, their only other option than Promotion/Relegation system would be to outright join MWC, which is arguably an even lower status.

Right, I COMPLETELY agree. But I’d argue that is a competition play for potential eyes and money, not a financial play for guaranteed money. Splitting hairs maybe, but wanted to clarify what I meant.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
This quote from the Boise St AD tells you all you need to know about the G5 thought process, the potential split(not happening any time soon) and why things like keeping the PAC name is important. It's all about perception imo.
Quote:
His proposal begins by telling athletics officials to “control what you can control.” In reference to the Power conferences, it asks: “Do you want to be at the kids’ table under the same roof, or eating at a different establishment?”

Everybody not in a P4 conference is at another establishment while the bottom feeders in the the P4 are at the kids table.

There is a lot of truth to that but they all pretend they are still part of the party and no one wants to be the first to leave(or be left out)

I don't think anybody is pretending about anything..G5 conferences know their place in the hierarchy. They are not snobby or unwilling to add from FCS if it makes sense for a conference to do so. Lots of FCS schools have moved up.
As for getting left behind. OSU and WAZZU are the only P5 schools to be left in the lurch, so far. There will be more. It should be noted that no G5 school or conference caused the demise of the Pac 12..They did it to themselves.
One positive that may emerge from this is a more regional makeup of G5 conferences. The AAC is not pursuing OSU/Wazzu and their commissioner said they were looking at a more regional model. Scott Barnes, who is the AD of Oregon State also said that the health and welfare of their student athletes is better served by less time and travel in a non regional conference.
I don't think the relegation model will happen with the PAC/MW partnership but that doesn't have to happen anyway. I do think all the MW schools will be part of the merger if that does indeed occur. If not, then there could be some schools leaving.

No, it shows half of the PAC has interest in the concept. Which is unfortunate because that’s who the entire scheme is centered around.
Funny I haven’t heard anything from Nevada, UNM, SJSU, Fresno State, Hawaii or Utah State on the matter

Unless PAC-2 has poaching funds, Promo/Releg is better than outright merger with MWC.

The problem is this is just an echo-chamber. We can all want it, but telling us about it isn't going to change anything.
Want to make a change/difference? Spend the same amount of effort that you spend complaining on here and direct that energy toward talking to big donors (oil money, Scheels, Sanford, RDO, etc....) Get them on board to commit to $X more in donations if NDSU makes a move up. Create a coalition of local/regional businesses to apply pressure to the university. Start a movement. Not with us, but with the community. Getting bisonvillers to come on board is relatively easy. But I'm willing to bet that even if 90% of us doubled our annual contributions, it would barely move the needle.
You've said it before, NDSU should move up because our brand is marketable. If you want to put pressure on NDSU, you need to get some marketable names behind the effort as well because honestly, Chapo; tjamz; TAB; PL; Kevin; Scottie; etc... are the "Hoople" level investors in comparison.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
For Chapo:
Quote:
To this point, NDSU has been mostly passive in whatever interest it has in moving to FBS. I've been told the people in the Mountain West who need to know of the Bison's interest have been told. Perhaps it's time to get more aggressive if the school is serious about pursuing a move up. If you want to be part of the action, you have to let people know. - McFeely

It’s going to take most of the conference to vote to move into this regelation model. The bottom half of the current MWC would not benefit from this new model and would prefer an outright merger with the PAC-2. There is a reason teams like Boise and Oregon St are the ones pushing this model because they want some of the MWC members but not all of them

They all potentially benefit though from the additional PAC bids and tourney credits. It's in the best interests of all for the PAC conference to exist, if they can agree on financial terms that work.
Continue to believe this is the best answer for all of them *IF* they can cooperate on it. Fear or Greed could mess it up though.
