Re: A new and better FBS thread
Well, a super unfortunate situation, but with NMSU shutting down their basketball program for what will likely be the rest of the year I really can’t see a way that they are in conversations for conference moves anytime in the next few years (been speculated that they could move with UTEP, possibly to MW).
They had a player shoot and kill a UNM student DURING A ROAD TRIP TO UNM that police are calling self defense (how the hell does a player bring a gun on a road trip and then sneak out the night before a major rivalry game woof) and now the school is saying there are major hazing incidents.
You really hate to see it but NMSU’s only draw is their somewhat decent basketball program. Early days but this all seems like a program killer, especially with the transfer portal.

I was just reading about that. Too many moving parts and bad decisions.

UVA had something similar happen in football last year and didn't play their last game or two. Student/ex-player got himself included on a class field trip and started shooting other players on the bus. Three were killed. Some personal grudge with teammates I think. There's been problems with guns at some other major football programs too, though most involve something off campus at a bar, etc.
It's sad what is happening in society overall. Maybe universities will have to use metal detectors like some high schools do. I think both programs will recover though.

I spoke with a local police officer last summer and asked if the high gun violence rate in the city was still drug and gang related. He said it wasn't any longer. It's now 18-24 year old men who used to solve disputes with fists and now solve them with guns. These are harder to monitor and prevent because it could be anyone. In the drug and gang area they tend to know who is involved and can better prevent it (even though that's not easy).

Similar in that guns were related and games got cancelled.
I felt like with UVA the team was seen as the victims as it wasn’t a current player and he’d been off the roster for years. NM State’s issues are involving current players, a player bringing a gun on a road trip and their alumni base and apparently the admin are putting a large amount of blame on their coaching staff.

It looks like they tried to cover up a violent crime so perhaps so blame is appropriate.

How much is their Midco media deal? Not very high so I suspect their small market is to blame

The big question is how many people in the Sioux Falls area pay more attention to the P-5 teams in Nebraska and Iowa and how many actually watch SDSU or USD on Midco.

I'd guess the same fraction as Gopher fans in the Fargo DMA.

I know we're splitting hares here but I seriously doubt it. Fargo is much more "all in" for NDSU than SF is for either of the SD schools. A major part of that is that NDSU is actually IN Fargo and it is further away from other competing programs. Hell, I bet there's more UND fans in Fargo than Gopher ones.
That said, I think the situation in SF is sliding toward SDSU given the current nature of the Husker program and the seeming rise of SDSU.
I think SDSU would be a good partner to move up again. I wouldn't wait for them but I think their BBall programs could help legitimize the pairing to any conference, providing a travel partner in the process. If that happens, I wouldn't at all be surprised to see SDSU football be as successful as NDSU in FBS. I personally think the Holy Nutmeg has been holding them back (Natty notwithstanding) and with him gone, they can take more risks as a program.

Not likely. Way back in the 90s when I worked at Burger King we had some kind of promotion with NCAA football where everybody got a baseball cap with a college logo to wear at work. I got the Minnesota hat and the manager's husband was the only one who wanted to trade. My insurance agent's family are the only other Gopher fans I can remember in the F-M area because their son, Justin Conzemius (The Fargo Flash as they call him on KFAN) played football there.

Just need someone to find a tweet by a college kid with 28 followers saying the MWC is going to need new schools if they lose a couple.
That should spice things back up.

PAC 10 visiting schools this Wednesday right?

Re: A new and better FBS thread
The PAC needs access into SoCal (students, alumni, donors).
SDSU is the only thing close to the standards of CaliStan.
SDSU has to be the prime target.
I still say the BXII could really foul up the PAC by offering San Diego State.
And SDSU could be awesome bait for the 'zonas (who see the money will be better in the BXII but still want SoCal access).
The 'zonas have to worry that UW/UO/CaliStan would ditch them in a heartbeat for the B1G.
Behind only Notre Dame, at this moment in time SDSU seems to have a lot of power as to how realignment may sort out.

The rumor I heard was that B1G doesn’t want Cal and Stanford is going the Notre Dame route. ASU, Zona, Colorado and Utah to BXII.

I read that multiple B10 sources have stated that USC and UCLA effectively blocked Oregon and Washington from the B10. If that is true, they will be stuck in the PAC for a while.

Not sure why that would be the case. FWIW - the PAC12 school that looks more like the B10 would be Washington when you look at both the academic and athletic profiles.

Lol if athletic and academic profiles decided everything, let me be first to introduce you to the BIG12 NDSU Bison

The story before USC/UCLA were taken was if the UC regents step in the B1G would take USC/Stan (both private). B1G'd get both SoCal and BayArea access that way. That they went USC/UCLA tells me where the B1G sees the value (UCLA > Cali or Stan).
In about every scenario I read the one left behind would be Cal.

The other "realignment" news was Middle Georgia State moving to Peach Belt, not sure if he considers that "mid major", possibly.

Didn't even know that Middle Georgia State was a real school! Can't name another school in the Mighty Peach Belt Conference.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
There are a bunch stories saying that Florida State might be one next big dominos to fall in next year or two.
They are not happy in current ACC being down 30 million to Big Ten and SEC each season. I think they are currently working on medical school to try to get in AAU in few years.

FSU seems to be doing a little sabre rattling to try to get a bigger share of the ACC payout. They've talked about how they bring in 15% of conference revenue.
The ACC has a pretty strong GoR contract, and thus far nobody has been willing to challenge it in court. Their media deal runs thru 2036 and is a lot smaller than the B1G/SEC, which is what has some schools jockeying for position. I don't think anything is imminent yet. The next moves will be determined by the PAC media deal and their expansion or implosion.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
So..Gloria Nevarez, MW commish (and El Chapo's pen pal) stopped by Reno for an interview. It was a wide ranging discussion about all the things she has been doing since she got the gig and the general well being of the conference. If you wish you can catch the interview on nevadasportsnet.com
However, here is the part that may be of interest
* On her level of concern in losing a school to expansion:
"Concerned is not the right word, but we're ready for it. We have a small subcommittee, three presidents and three ADs, that have met. We've scrubbed the entire landscape of schools. We have scenario A if one school leaves, B if two schools, Armageddon if big conferences get destabilized. So we're ready. We have no shortage of schools that are ready to join us, but we're in a really good position. We can be selective, and we can think about, 'If we lose any schools, what is it we're trying to replace? Do folks bring assets, strength, make us stronger or just strength in numbers?' We're analyzing this daily and trying to keep our ear to the rumor mill. It certainly is most of our most immediate focus because there's a lot of misinformation and rumor mill out there, and some of it's intentional to try to increase bargaining power and desirability. It's a constant in the background. But to your point, we are working our strategic plan, we're working on this brand analysis, and I'm really trying to get around to see all the schools."

Re: A new and better FBS thread
In other somewhat relative news. Former Nevada Head coach Chris Ault has been named to the CFP 13 person selection committee. Ault is in the college football Hall of Fame and was also the Athletic Director for years. He took Nevada from D3 to 1AA independent, to the Big Sky, the Big West (FBS), the WAC and the MW. He knows just about everybody. He knows and understands the challenges for non P5 schools and he will be an advocate on that committee..

Funny you mention that. This checks out with something I heard in passing the other day.
Sounds like there's a phone somewhere in Colorado Springs with a 701 area code in its recently dialed.
