Well, a super unfortunate situation, but with NMSU shutting down their basketball program for what will likely be the rest of the year I really can’t see a way that they are in conversations for conference moves anytime in the next few years (been speculated that they could move with UTEP, possibly to MW).

They had a player shoot and kill a UNM student DURING A ROAD TRIP TO UNM that police are calling self defense (how the hell does a player bring a gun on a road trip and then sneak out the night before a major rivalry game woof) and now the school is saying there are major hazing incidents.

You really hate to see it but NMSU’s only draw is their somewhat decent basketball program. Early days but this all seems like a program killer, especially with the transfer portal.
Mountain West, hope for the best.

I was just reading about that. Too many moving parts and bad decisions.

UVA had something similar happen in football last year and didn't play their last game or two. Student/ex-player got himself included on a class field trip and started shooting other players on the bus. Three were killed. Some personal grudge with teammates I think. There's been problems with guns at some other major football programs too, though most involve something off campus at a bar, etc.

It's sad what is happening in society overall. Maybe universities will have to use metal detectors like some high schools do. I think both programs will recover though.

I spoke with a local police officer last summer and asked if the high gun violence rate in the city was still drug and gang related. He said it wasn't any longer. It's now 18-24 year old men who used to solve disputes with fists and now solve them with guns. These are harder to monitor and prevent because it could be anyone. In the drug and gang area they tend to know who is involved and can better prevent it (even though that's not easy).

Similar in that guns were related and games got cancelled.

I felt like with UVA the team was seen as the victims as it wasn’t a current player and he’d been off the roster for years. NM State’s issues are involving current players, a player bringing a gun on a road trip and their alumni base and apparently the admin are putting a large amount of blame on their coaching staff.

It looks like they tried to cover up a violent crime so perhaps so blame is appropriate.

How much is their Midco media deal? Not very high so I suspect their small market is to blame

The big question is how many people in the Sioux Falls area pay more attention to the P-5 teams in Nebraska and Iowa and how many actually watch SDSU or USD on Midco.
It's OK to not be OK.

I'd guess the same fraction as Gopher fans in the Fargo DMA.
