First bowl game after going FBS? Bison fans would take over the place at least 3 days before...it would be chaos. I don't care what the bowl was or where it was. Not saying they would keep doing it, but the first one...yeah we as a fanbase would travel for that. If there are 20k tickets available to Bison...I wouldn't put it past us to do it. We'd have to have that probationary period...so people would be itching for something postseason to go to.
And there I go defending bowl games. I'm no fan of bowl games whatsoever. I love the playoffs.

Nope. For a shitty bowl game? No. Not a single chance in hell.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Dare I say Trans and daddy are both correct?
The first bowl, yeah, it's new and novel. The numbers would show up. Advantage Trans.
But after that first experience and it's a weekday bowl in a so-so destination with under a week to make travel plans? Advantage daddy.

This makes me think they should add another bowl game called The TransDaddy Bowl. Maybe have it in Brookings.

What about bowl games in Boise, Detroit, Birmingham, NYC and other places where it might not be so nice in December?

Their "decent" is better than our "best". From a TV coverage, competition, etc. standpoint.
I would 100x over rather win the MW championship game than the FCS at this point. And I live in Frisco...

We should just say fuck everybody else and play sdsu 5 to 7 times a year and call it the dakota series eh. See who wins that eh

Absolutely agree, depending on the situation. If we're 10-3/9-4 have a good season, make conference championship game I think there's a really good chance.
I do think that the interest would taper off though like you say.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Remember, if we go FBS there will be no more Nationals Championships.
There will be only Toilet Bowls, and the occasional nicer bowl late in December or early January when there is a great season.
And before you rag on me saying they we could not compete for one, ask this.....do you actually think NDSU could beat Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Georgia, Clemson, ND, etc. in the "college football playoffs". Seriously?
I would love to beat the big boys just as much as anyone else. But I'm also a realist, that would be a long shot of a bet.

For me (and many) its not about getting to a "Toilet Bowl." It's about seeing how good NDSU can get.

RIP Coach Leach. I don't think people realize how great of a guy he was (especially after that bullshit at Texas Tech). He was a true innovator of offense and a hilarious interview.

I get what you are saying, but after literally winning a bunch of "national championships" what is the draw? It's not like it's a true national championship. It's a subdivision. Yes, we do get to say that we are the best of the schools who don't fund football very much. That is why many think that the FBS is the way to go.
With the way that the FCS is today, winning our conference and beating SDSU is our primary goal. Maybe we get to play a good team or two in the playoffs but generally speaking we don't play anyone tough until the semis or finals. If we win the whole thing we get to be happy that we were the best of 4-5 good FCS teams. Yea us!
In the FBS, the goal there would be to win our conference, play a better overall schedule and potentially get a chance to make the CFB playoff (if we have a really special season). For me, having a better overall schedule every year with the once in a decade opportunity to make it to the FBS playoffs would FAR outweigh anything we could accomplish at the FCS level.

UTSA & Troy play in the Duluth Trading Cure Bowl on December 16th. Both teams are 11-2 and ranked 24 & 25.
Fresno State is 9-4 and plays in Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl on the 17th against Washington State who is 7-5.
Boise Stat (9-4) plays North Texas (7-6) in the Frisco Bowl on the 17th.

Montana lost in the second round of the FCS playoffs in Fargo, ND in front of a half-full crowd. UND lost in the first round at something called Weber State in front of 2k fans in a semi-blizzard.
See how this goes both ways?

Re: A new and better FBS thread
The allure of going FBS is getting the opportunity for 1) continuing to build our brand and see how big it can get and 2) increasing our ceiling to be able to capitalize on the success of #1. For me and most, it is a long play. I think that's why you see a lot of younger folks on board with it.
Boise State would not be Boise State today if they stayed FCS. In fact, you can look no further than Boise State to see what happens to a program that doesn't take advantage of their success when they could've.

Bowl games are about $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. They are exhibition games in which players may opt out of to not risk injury prior to entering the NFL draft.

You are correct. Bowls aren't what they used to be. With the 12 team CFP, bowls are now officially (if they weren't already) exhibitions. The goal of FBS is to win your conference, play a better schedule and maybe get to the CFP. It's not about bowl games.

No kidding. My favorite game in 5 years was one we lost. It has been SIX YEARS since we have been a legitimate underdog in a football game.

This is the Internet. We spew stuff out like a firehose against a wall.
But if you would like me to directly comment on your post #9655:
Maybe the NDSU-Montana & Weber-UND games didn't draw well due to the fact that is 2022 and there are more entertainment options and digital viewing options then ever before. I was disappointed by the turnouts for both, but what can I as a fan do about it, not much. Nor am I willing or able to put in the time, money, or effort to change that.
I went to the Montana game and cheered. I watched most of the Weber-UND game because I have ESPN+.
I plead the FIRST when I poke fun at the bowl system and the four-team "playoff". And playoff is being generous, its more like an invitational.

Agreed, but is anyone really arguing that point? I don't think anyone seriously thinks NDSU can win in a playoff with those teams. Maybe they could hope to win a game or something. It would be more like getting into the NCAA bb tournament.

100 %, but it’s a mindset that people can’t see until they are there, apparently, much like resistance to moving up to FCS from D2. By staying stationary at the top of FCS - with schools like JMU leaving and UIW and MSU closing in - NDSU limits its growth as a program because it has hit the ceiling and is essentially stuck in place

Sure, but the bowl games are going against the same headwinds as FCS playoff games.
The overarching point here is that the bowls are not the reason to go FBS, at least not initially. It's to continue growing the brand, play similarly-resourced programs, and be amongst our peers. In my opinion, that is where NDSU is best-served as a university.
That last point is the reason why I want NDSU to make a push to go. Not because it serves my ego, or because "FBS go burrrr" Lakes-math misgivings, or whatever other made up ulterior motive people ascribe to the FBS crew.

For the vast majority of FBS, OOC games are also meaningless exhibitions. Those games are just about money. Teams are either getting money to play a road game or spending money to play at home.
I preferred the olden days when it wasn't about money all the time.

Yeah, the "either you play for a championship, or it's just an exhibition" crowd are so misguided. It's awesome that in FCS we've been able to play for championships. The reality is that NONE of our other sports will EVER play for a championship ever in D1. Does that make all of NDSU's non-football sports just exhibitions then?
Why can't people just enjoy good people, good football and good times?
"It's just an exhibition!" lol

Agreed, the university needs should take priority. I hope that sports needs would come second to the University and its primary purpose, higher learning.

Yeah I get that. I think NDSU is stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Other than that, could care less about the MWC or any other G5 football either. It is what it is...the best of the lousiest, the lousiest of the best.

Read the reply in the context it put into.
"How good can NDSU get?" I responded with some decent win teams playing early in the bowl schedule. My point was even if NDSU gets a good win count for the season, they may still play in a low-level bowl game.

With a 12-team playoff, it's possible that NDSU could be the 12th seed and get to play the first round at the 5th seed. Then it would be a matter of trying to see how well we can do in the playoffs.

If this game were to happen it would IMMEDIATELY be the biggest athletic event in the history of NDSU. Moving to FBS means paying to be a part of the FBS club and having that opportunity.

Lol daddy's gonna love this...
Going to the MW or MAC is so much more than a hopefully, maybe, once in 20 year shot at the CFP though. That is just icing and removes the FCS forever block of "it's not possible to win a championship"

Just like Minnesota, Illinois, Arizona, Cal, Tulsa...etc etc whats your freaking point??
with the new CFP if NDSU is #1 in MWC or AAC and they are the #1 ranked G5 Conference then we get a #12 seed or 11, 10 with a chance!
12 vs 5 11 vs 6 10 vs 7 NDSU could win 1 or 2 games!! where is your faith!
plus holy shit our 2nd team is reaching the semifinals right now.
going FBS eliminates 3 home playoff games that NO ONE IS GOING TOO!!!

Re: A new and better FBS thread
well it eliminates the need for NDSU to find these 8000-10,000 for 3 home games in december every year that keeps twindling.
OH and NCAA takes 70% so what's the point anymore.
FACE FACTS FCS is DEAD NDSU is STUPID for STAYING FCS especially with the CFP being at 12 teams and 1 of those teams is GUARANTEED to be a G5 Conference team!

He's right. Congrats you're the bridesmaid here's your 40 point ass kicking.
But the odds of NDSU ever being 12? .0001ish
