I don't think anyone on this board is to blame for anything that happens in NDSU athletics. But I am playing the "I told you so" game about two years in advance. And if it turns out I'm wrong, I'll be the one lacking self-awareness to remember this conversation. However, I'm guessing I'll have your help to remind me.

Just remember, basketball season is less than a month away. Then we'll be seeing eye-to-eye on everything!

It has been a long, long time since the attendance requirement was taken seriously. Watch some Rice and New Mexico State highlights. Idaho’s stadium capacity was less than the requirement lol

FREAKIN KENNESAW STATE. NOT NDSU. TO FBS. LOL. FIRE LARSON
Sources: Kennesaw State has emerged as the favorite to become Conference USA’s tenth member. That addition is expected in the near future for Kennesaw to join effective 2024.

I guess if you’re going to suck might as well suck in FBS. Go Owls. It's the Owls, right?
I’m not worried about NDSU moving up. All signs suggest to me that they are actively pursuing it, and I know the Bison will find a good FBS home. I suspect they’ve been working on it for some time, and I appreciate the standards

They will have 1 Neutral Home game at Atlanta Falcons stadium vs a big opponent and get 50,000 attendance
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING SAID BY KSU IS . (WE NEED TO BE FBS BY 2024 TO PARTICIPATE IN THE "OPPORTUNITY" TO GET INTO THE CFP)

On the flip side, this move nails CUSA to the floor, they won't sniff the CFP the next 10-20 years.
Any other adds will come from the same region, the next schools up are SFA, Tarleton, UCA, EKU.
Missouri St could get in if they want probably, but they seem more interested in SBC.
Location, location, location. It's why we need the PAC/MWC cascade to get sorted out.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
problem with your scenario is the CUSA/MAC/SUN BELT will have a "Chip & A Chance"
because in 2024 the door is shut & NDSU will be ballsacking the Dakota schools & Terra Haute/Mcomb teams for next 100 years while our idiot admin says "we will see what the future brings"

SBC and MAC have a chance. CUSA does not.
If you go back the past 8 years when the G5 became included in CFP rankings, the bid would have gone to:
AAC 6 out of 8 years, MWC 1 year, MAC one year. The NY6 access slot becomes the CFP bid.
The odds are basically zero for CUSA due to conference makeup and SOS now. Quite literally will be 8-10 of the very bottom schools.
It's really stupid wringing our hands over a conference that has no interest in us due to geography. It's like wishing we were in the Southland.
Nothing is changing in 2024 that isn't already known. Theres no magic gate that will close.

If the PAC12 B12 and MWC all continue to exist then I agree with you. If 3 becomes 2, I think a gate does close because conference sizes would already go up to accommodate the merges.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
So now the programs that were supposed to backfill the absences of App, Georgia Southern, coastal Carolina, James Madison, Sam Houston state and Jacksonville State - are now themselves leaving FCS?

Delaware, W&M, NC A&T are who I expect to step up in the east.
South/southeast was already pretty diluted. Maybe Citadel, Mercer a few schools like that.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
I keep hearing NDSU admin needs to make an announcement of FBS intentions, but how often does that actually happen? In the last 20 years 12 teams have joined FBS, plus SHSU, JSU, and apparently KSU in the near future. Other than random people on the internet speculating or sportswriters spreading rumors to fill space and get clicks, how many of these programs had an official announcement of intent before an invite? Not counting ones like ODU that had a full FBS conference invite before even playing a single game when starting football from scratch. Please don't just say "x did", give a link to the announcement.
My main point is everybody with the power to get us FBS knows about NDSU football. I am very confident every single conference commissioner and uni president/AD have heard of us.

I'm picturing NDSU, SDSU, Montana, & Montana State as the four musicians playing music on the Titanic as it's sinking. App State, Georgia Southern, and Coastal got on the first life raft and are just looking back at the sinking (FCS) ship in the distance. JMU, Sam Houston, Jax State, & Kennesaw are now boarding the last life raft.
Other FCS schools in the south with a pulse (EKU, Tarleton, SFA, McNeese, Missouri St., etc.) are about to jump off the ship and hope to grab onto something, waiting for a (FBS) rescue boat to come save them.
The rest of the FCS is stuck in steerage on the sinking FCS ship, completely irrelevant to the outside world.

This is such a perfect analogy. I'm imagining UND as the guy who jumps and hits the propeller. SDSU will end up being Rose on the door, taper and daddy daycare are Jack in the water saying "this is fine, someone will save me when the stars align".

Would be great! This ship won't be sunk in 2026. And the Carpathia is first class cruising.

You guys will be walking on the promenade deck of a new conference luxury ship before you know it. I do not think you are going to be stuck in FCS..

This is an accurate picture. Except that I would add that it is as if the musicians on the Titanic were saying "look at all the losers getting into the life rafts."

I’m not asking for FBS intentions specifically. I’m asking for them to sell a vision for the entire athletic department and how that ties into the entire university. The destination isn’t just about FBS. It’s about athletics being a touch point for alumni, fan, community and corporate engagement. They need to share the overall framework of their vision more publicly. They don’t need to promise FBS. They do need to say they aspire to be one of the best mid-major universities in the nation and they need to let anyone with any connection to the university know what their contributions will do to attain that goal.

I'm sorry if it doesn't include a bulleted list with everything you want to see. Do you really think our admin can pull off this amazingly successful campaign but have no plan for the proceeds?

Never said they didn’t have a plan. They just aren’t very good at selling it. And selling it matters.

Raising $586 million, plus another $50 million for a practice facility suggests the opposite, they are pretty darn good at selling it.
Just because they aren't shouting fbs from the rooftops doesn't mean people aren't buying in.

Declining attendance and ticket sales says otherwise. There are lots of good things at NDSU. That doesn’t mean we aren’t allowed to criticize the things that aren’t so good.

Part of this may be people are still coming out of sheltering from the pandemic. Attendance has dropped across FBS as well.We might see some improvement as people get more comfortable with being in crowds again though.
I do think boredom of winning games too easily may also be a factor, but cusa wouldn't change that, and I don't think MAC would either.
People still turn out for SDSU and the "big" playoff games.
OOC in fbs we would have two home games, with one of them likely to be FCS. Most of the home G5 OOC games won't be against top 25 teams either.
Certainly hyping to the world we want to be FBS won't get droves of people eager to go see drake now.
In short, I don't think anything other than MWC will really move the attendance needle that much.

You seem like a reasonable person. This isn’t pandemic related. It was happening prior. The “big” playoff games have been seeing declining attendance. The JMU game last year was great but it wasn’t a sellout. Apologizing for negligence on this issue isn’t going to do anything. Maybe you’re right and nothing outside of the MWC is going to help improve this. One thing I do know is that it sure as hell isn’t going to change doing the same thing that’s always been done.

I'm just not convinced there are many moves that can fix this, other than getting a MWC invite.
People are frustrated with our situation and want to feel like "something" can be done to change it. I'm not seeing any easy answers.
Declaring we are headed to FBS could worsen matters if no invite materializes. Independent with no CFP bid possibility is like program suicide.
We will almost certainly be FCS no matter what for the next couple seasons. Need to make the best of it and enjoy the championships. The changes in fbs aren't done, and eventually the pieces will shift to present an opening. It might take until 2024 or 2026, but that's ok.

Your sentiment I believe is shared by many. The reality is the FBS games are what gave the early run the energy. The championships certainly contributed but the energy started to build after the 2006 Gopher game and built from there. Obviously being competitive or winning those games was essential but it was huge in the fan excitement. The fact that we have gone 6 years with No FBS game really stunted fan enthusiasm.

And that’s just talking from the perspective of us fans.
I sincerely think the best benefits to the University are non-athletic. But from past experience that doesn’t seem to carry much currency here.

Yes, we might have to settle for one Arizona type game in G5 conferences also.
The typical OOC schedule is one home FCS and G5 game, one away G5 and P5.
Some of the P5's will also likely continue to avoid us, as they won't want a G5 loss anymore than they want a FCS loss.
P5 teams usually look for G5 punching bags for a home game, it's like their FCS warmup game.
The only games you can truly count on in FBS are the teams in your conference, and whatever Bowl tie ins the conference has.
