Defensively, in the first game of the year when Drake ran the ball down the field for a TD on their first possession, we should have been worried. Worst Bison defense in well over a decade!
I thought this was QB U and Randy was the quarterback whisperer?
Maybe he only whispered into ears of guys who were super talented and their success had nothing to do with him...hmmmmm
Kind of Like Tyler calling plays for NFL players and then he doesn't have one, and he doesn't know what the hell to do.

Part of coaching is recruiting and Hedberg's been here recruiting those NFL QB's. Last one was so good he left after basically his sophomore season from an FCS school which is bonkers. It's my opinion we are still trying to recover from Lance's unexpected early exit. NDSU was lucky to have a regular and predictable progression of starting QB's that got messed up when Lance left earlier than any sane person would have guessed.

Fair enough, I agree with the Lance leaving early catching us off guard.
But his replacement was supposed to be Cam or Cole, and it doesn't look like either of them are more than 15-20th best QB's in FCS, which isn't exactly exciting considering the average talent level in this division at QB.
I'm not sure Randy actually got Carson, Easton and Trey to come here, because I don't know if he actually goes into the home and recruits hard, but I'd bet he got lucky more than he had some sort of exceptional skill at making QB's NFL worthy.

Cole was supposed to be next starter. Lance left too early so Cam had to and he further complicated things by winning a Natty. #BisonProblems

Hedberg recruits North Dakota.

Jaren Lewis recently portaled to the other KState
Kent State - from Kansas State
Also, in regards to depth questions behind Trey Lance - Cam Miller was a 3 star recruit, one of the higher ever for NDSU.

Stars don't mean shit, especially compared to calf diameter.

I know. Probably doesn’t see the field there either? Poor kid! All things considered, I believe it would’ve benefited the team having that scholarship Fr. QB (can’t recall who they signed instead) in the room during Trey’s Rfr. Year. Also, believe he was “ranked” higher than Trey but lower than Cam.

Randy has been frustrated with Tyler Roehl. Randy is severely hampered by Tyler's inability to call meaningful pass plays. Poor guy is recruiting only QBs who can run and unable to bring in guys who are more like Trey or Carson.

If Randy gets all the Bison coaches together and starts whispering in their ears, he can do this eh.

This exactly! Hedberg is not the problem here! Roehl is the problem and needs to go. Like others said before our offense is predictable and unimaginable. He has gotten by long enough with superior talent as his crutch. The talent just can’t get it done anymore against the top teams in the FCS. We were lucky to beat UIW and SDSU has us figured out. When Randy leaves our QB room is screwed!

It seems like the "tail is wagging the dog" in Bison coaching staff. Randy Hedberg is frustrated with Roehl as it impacts his QBs. Other coaching staff no doubt are also frustrated by Tyler Roehl and perhaps Matt Entz's inability to right the ship. Seems dysfunctional. Many of the problems seem to revolve around OC and Head Coach. I don't understand - is Matt Entz lacking a spine who can't do what he is hired to do - manage coaching staff dysfunction and make tough decisions? I am just exasperated. I think that if we have the same problem in games result in 2023 schedule, you are going to see a lot of fans bolt, not that we have to win the national championship every single year but that it is just tiresome to see such poor playcalling decisions and recruiting decisions. We need that motivational guy to come back. Surely there are some good OC candidates out there who would be thrilled to work at NDSU.
The best coaching staffs or really any groups of people do best when there is not only a free exchange of ideas BUT also Devil's Advocates are welcome to give ideas. Brain-storming is also a good tool. ;)

Re: 2021 Verbal: Cole Payton
Has anyone seen how Cole can do for an entire game with a full playbook. Willing to bet Cole is better than Cam, but these coaches won't give him a chance.

Based on what? He's barely thrown and when he has, it hasn't been impressive.
This cam narrative is complete bullshit. He is as good, if not better than Brock and walker. Because they won the big games and cam hasn't, everybody wants this kids head. Cam was not this years teams problem. And he's went to back 2 back championships and people want him benched. JFC
Not to mention entz and rohl have went to 3 of the last 4 championships and people want them fired. End of rant.

I'm about as critical as anyone, I just want roehl to go somewhere else for a while so he can learn how to operate a passing game.

I agree with you that Cam is not a problem, he’s reliable, but he’s Brock Lite at best.
He could be way better, but the coaches have not given him the opportunity to shine, and that really sucks.
Honestly, with all due respect, if you can’t see issues with coaching, I don’t think we’re watching the same games.

The only thing consistent about how we used him this year is how inconsistent we used him this year.
The only thing easily predictable about how how we used him was how predictable we used him.
98% chance we were running him, and D knew it. And I just shake my head at having Cam (Natty game) in next to him at the RB position, and we run a fake to Cam and there goes Cole for zero yards. Were we trying to set something up there? If so, we certainly didn’t go back to it. What a complete waste of a play and player in that play (Cam). Could have just ran it with 10 people, as no one in the stadium thought Cam was getting the ball as a RB. Is, we hadn’t used it as a set up play during year—>AND WE RUN IT IN THE Natty down be a couple of scores or wherever we were at in the game at that point??
I’d like to know WT EXACT FUCK ROEHL WAS THINKING THERE, assuming he was even thinking. Dumbest play I’ve ever seen.

Come on. Usually the back up doesnt play the whole game. Not to mention the whole playbook thing. But he did have a chance and pissed up a rope by throwing and interception. When that was the worst thing he could have done.

. Yep, coaches surely gave Cole a chance to show his skills. He gets to handoff the ball 5 to 10 times in a few games during clean up duty. Other than that he comes in to do a designated QB run 0 to 3 times a game, with the only exception being the stupid call for Cole to chuck the ball into the end zone to make up for Cam's penalty for his show off bow and arrow move. Cam should have been suspended for a game for that crap! Either the coaches or Cam are to blame for not having a consistent passing game. I think Cam's 1 for 12 performance against UIW was disgusting and much worse than judging Cole on one pass of the few he got to throw this year!

When youre the back thats what you get. No different than any other team.

I don’t know whether that is true with this O staff. We rotate and play 20 players—can’t tell me that the the skill players are all of equal talent so it’s justified. And, I think that effects current QB play.
May as well rotate QB I’f you’re gonna rotate so many other skill players. Or, maybe, quit doing it already and play your best players until and if they need a break.

Ive never liked rotating skill players. The more they get the ball the better they get. They find that groove and become the hot hand. You lose what there D is doing. I guess thats why you need a OC to tell you? When you are on the field you can figure out how to beat your opponent. And you know that.

Re: 2021 Verbal: Cole Payton
We have had Brock, Wentz, Easton,....thru Bohl and Klienman eras
Did they handle it diff?
At least give the backup a full quarter in mop up duty--- with pass attempts, play Change at LOs etcetc
Did they add real game training to practice regimines ?

How many games did we have this year to allow for mop up duty? I honestly don’t recall.

Don't believe Hedberg recruited Wentz or Stick to NDSU as he wasn't here when those guys committed. Klieman brought him on staff when he got the head job. Trey leaving early was unfortunate but Cam did a decent job as a true freshman and sophomore. I expected more from him this season but not sure how much we can put on him or the staff. Definitely need improvement from all of them next season!

4 possible I’d say...
Drake 56-14 final. Believe game he threw pick. Don’t believe he attempted another pass?
NC AT&T. 43-3 final
Western Ill. 56-17 final
Ill. State. 24-7
But gotta say....once they switched out Quincy P....same pattern.

For this past season Cole Peyton only had the one interception in the SDSU game. He was 8 of 12 in passing. He ran 38 times for 7.5 yards per carry. Much better average per carry than Cam. And passing completion percentage slightly better than Cam.

Cam's passing stats were slightly down when compared to last year (less TDs, more INTs, less completion percentage). His rushing yards about doubled, increasing an average of 18 more yards per game. The passing game was less consistent this year and was a big factor why the Bison offense often struggled and became one dimensional and very predictable!

Not sure I’d blame the passing stats on came. We had Watson last year.
And let’s not forget how bad the D was.

Still need to work with what you got. That's why I think it's both a coaching and Cam problem. 1 of 12 in a game where most of the passes were not even close is what I remember. I really hope our coaches invigorate our passing game for next year. Assuming Cam will start we will see then how he does. If Cam not able to get the job done then Cole should start.
-
Re: 2021 Verbal: Cole Payton
Should be a full fledged competition for the starting job this spring and let the best player win. Cam regressed this season IMO, he has had plenty of opportunity to improve his game time to put up or shut up as they say. Of course the other players and coaches need to improve their game as well!
