Al is like a little yapping dog. NDSU wanted to get the funding formula changed it was changed. NDSU wanted to get the BSA renovated and it is being renovated.
If NDSU presents a viable plan in moving up, then to me Al is of no concern. He can yap all he wants but it will get him nowhere. I don't expect our admin to ever do anything half-assed so if we move up I'm confident we would have the proper plan in place.

Re: FBS move fans. Here's a good read
The day will come when FCS becomes watered down like D2 did and we will move up. Hopefully we dont wait a decade to long like we did last time. Personally, I am hoping that the BCS does split off and creates a vacuum where schools like Montana, ndsu, UNI, Delaware, NH, Nova, etc can move into. Until then, we should be dumping money into facilities so we can actually compete and recruit af the next level. besides, winning Natty's on the field is incredibly fun!

Re: FBS move fans. Here's a good read
Don't get me wrong............I think a move to the MWC would be great.......just not doable.
-
Re: FBS move fans. Here's a good read
Auggggh. Why does this keep coming up?????? We won't do anything until FBS/BCS people get their act together. If there is a split at the top, then, and only then, will we move up. Gene has said more than once we'll be in the second tier and that's the right place for us.
We've just hired the FCS coach in the land, we're about to piss pound a team in the semi's, and with any luck, we'll give EWU that beat down they deserve in Frisco.
Go Bison.

Amen...........that would be so, so sweet. Saturday I am cheering for EWU.....not because I like them......buy, because I hate them.

Re: FBS move fans. Here's a good read
Why the hell would you call up Bison Rewind to take a dump on what NDSU is trying to accomplish?
If a majority felt like Lakes, why should NDSU even bother winning the national championship? Maybe we can send the trophies we already have back to the NCAA.
He sounds EXACTLY like a UND fan ("So what if NDSU wins a national championship. It's a glorified rec league.") Screw that. You don't like the FCS, think it's beneath you? Fine, but don't downplay what NDSU is trying to accomplish and, heck, why not let somebody else have your tickets? They play FBS football in the Twin Cities. Go get drunk there.

The move wont be down. What is your think on playing in a 3rd level? Nothing on the radar suggests that.

Actually, when you examine it closely, we are already competing on the third level.
1. BCS teams.
2. The rest of FBS.
3. FCS
We belong in the second level of football, how we get there I have no idea.

No thought of moving down, the NCAA has already said they will work with the 5 major conferences, money suggests they may be on to their own level. Obviously this is all speculation of course, but you have to think that at some point in the future with money continuing to come into play they are going to look at something for those 5 major conferences.
The second level would be everyone else in FBS. The comparison was us and a program like Wyoming. I don't think Wyoming is a good comparison because we can get to a point where we can compete with Sun Belt and MAC teams who would also be on that second level. I've always thought we were in our rightful place in FCS, and these last 3 years have been a great ride. It has changed my tune about moving up, and like you said, GT will make the best decision for NDSU moving forward and I'm sure there will come a time when h thinks long and hard about moving up.

Re: FBS move fans. Here's a good read
How many posters here have confidence in Patty V. being able to position us in the second tier of college football? I think she does a good job but I think she is hogtied by the MVC. I think the MVC very much wants to be a basketball conference and will not let the MVFC get "uppity". I think the MVC would very much like to keep the MVFC in the third tier of college football.
As LittleGuysInGreen pointed out in a previous post, we are probably in the third tier now.
FWIW, I see the college football more in terms of attendance.
Tier 1 (BCS) - 50,000+
Tier 2 (Non-BCS and some FCS) - 15,000-50,000
Tier 3 (FCS) - <15,000
We should be in the tier 2 with the MAC, Sunbelt, Mountain West type divisions.
I have more confidence in Doug Fullerton getting the Big Sky into Tier 2 than I do Patty V. getting the MVFC there.
I could see the Big Sky with a north division of the ND, SD, MT and ID schools with Northern Colorado thrown in there for the ninth. I realize that many posters will say that is the NCC 2.0, but at least it would have away games that most of our fans could consistently attend. Personally, I don't have the resources to travel to Nevada, Fresno and Hawaii-type away games.
Just my opinion.

FCS is just embarrassing when you look at the interest in other schools. NDSU needs to sell high
This is just plain wrong. Lakes is the worst possible thing that could happen to NDSU where public relations is concerned. I've been following various FCS (and the FBS we play) message boards for the last 3 or 4 years and Lakes is constantly there trolling their boards, pissing them off and causing them to think that NDSU fans are raving lunatics. He is sometimes trolling their boards a year ahead of the game. NDSU has a very poor fan image around the country due to Lakes. The opposing team's fans who actually visit the Dome for a game are completely surprised that NDSU fans are actually the polar opposite of Lakes, e.g., not arrogant, and overbearingly annoying.

Bingo. He sure seems hell bent on spending other people's money. The past has shown that he doesn't understand the political and financial landscape in ND.
I'm sure Gene has a plan to move quickly if necessary. The financial commitment needed would be substantial but is probably doable. No, it would not include a stadium. That would completely blow it out of the water.

That may be a Catch-22. If we want to move up and be competitive, we will need a significant and sustainable increase in annual revenue. For most programs, a stadium is a key component, both in terms of capacity and premium seating options.
Don't get me wrong--I would love to see NDSU in the MWC or something similar. NDSU is a peer institution to those schools, we have a great community, a great fan base, and a great athletic tradition. The big obstacles are geography/conference affiliation and funding. We compete for state funding with multiple other institutions in a political climate that doesn't want to fund anything. We have a nice indoor stadium that isn't expandable. Something will need to change at the state level before the time is right to move up. It isn't just a matter of supporters having a "D2 attitude."
-
Re: FBS move fans. Here's a good read
We will stay at the FCS level until the ncaa decides to tip the table and see who slides off. In the meantime, continue to build in all aspects.
-
Re: FBS move fans. Here's a good read
We have a state were one can start a petition. Now getting funding for NDSU alone would not fly but if you included the other schools that mattered to enough of the population in ND you might be able to get a one time funding stimulus package passed to support facility upgrades. Personally I would much rather see a funding of higher education vs the conservation petition that is being touted by some groups.

Even if initiatives like this would be successful, I believe said facility upgrade stimulus money would be targeted to quite a few other things on campus before athletic facilities gets a dime.

In the one state in the union that needs one least.

Yea we don't need the stimulus so much in the area of the economy but we could use the stimulus in spending on education in the state. The state coffers are bursting at the seams with surpluses before they find ways to blow it on other stuff they should step up their game on funding the colleges. In another 10 years how much will be stuffed into the reserves?

Re: FBS move fans. Here's a good read
We have just went through about 5 years of unprecedented profit in the AG sector. It actually extended all the way down to the producers.
I have a strong feeling that is about to change. Maybe even a few truly ugly years in the near future. The affects are likely to be widespread. Belt tightening all around.

Just a hunch...but I think that he had thoughts of staying around if the move up was around the corner. Saw it wasn't gonna happen and then became more motivated to look elsewhere.

Re: FBS move fans. Here's a good read
Let's say the BCS broke off tomorrow and 2014 will have 3 levels of DI football. We're going to see an unprecedented conference shakeup. The left behind FBS schools are going to be pissed at the loss of revenue and perception of prestige from being top tier. The top schools will be begging to be accepted in the BCS, few if any will get in. Most if not all scholarship FCS conferences will want to be in the new mid-tier, someone(NCAA? ESPN?) will have to pick which make the cut. Somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 max move up to leave a functioning FCS. CAA, MVFC, SoCon go, dropping a few schools. Big Sky breaks in half. Now we have 5 oversized former FBS conferences, 4 undersized former FCS, and a few FCS independents. It's going to take awhile for that to sort out and nobody will be happy for years. We will find a home though.

Re: FBS move fans. Here's a good read
UCF just stroked a check for $3.4 million to the bowl committee because they couldn't get rid of their ticket guarantee. And Ohio State is on the hook for 10,000 unsold tickets to their BCS bowl. If that's what you're selling, I'm not buying I-A football.

The Orlando Sentinal and USA Today say that over half the athletic department budget is covered by student fees, almost $20 million dollars in 2012.
Taking $1.7 million out of student pockets to line those of a select few already rich guys on a noaccount bowl committee makes no sense to me.

The mountain west, american, usa, mid american, and the sun belt all just need to drop to fcs they have as much or less business in the fbs as NDSU does moving up
