We don’t even want their money. We just want to play football at the “highest collegiate level available”.
We want their…. Well.

Apologies. I re-wrote a “Bison Pride” function a while back so that I may understand and help you understand what I believe it means.
But I get pretty jacked up. I wrote the program to recycle 72 times every time I call it up.
That takes about .0076 seconds for me.
But. Gets me all fired up.
Every time.

I’m not “saying” I am a better “thinker” than you. But I am willing to attempt to PROVE that I am a bigger BISON FAN than LAKES.
Lol.

Michigan State is cool.
Other than that. Ohio State, Michigan, Nebraska, Iowa, minnysota, northwestern, Illinois, penn State, Rutgers, Maryland, USC, whoever.
Had to do a double take. You know what I see? Other than Michigan State???
Bitches. Bitches for the Bison to reign over, and robotically DOMINATAE!
Michigan State gave our program a lot. So. Win that one for pride. But be gentle.

I like this guy. He doesn’t really answer Mcfeely, but the questions are all loaded, and Cook does a good job of stepping around the mines and filling space with positive stuff.
Regarding enrollment, I’m hearing that freshman class is up yet again. Grad students too. But that’s just word of mouth, so we’ll have to wait and see.
But in the bigger picture, the funding model ND uses now is fatally flawed. The real issue is that ND has way too many – and I mean way too many – schools for its population.
Here’s a metaphor that sums it up. Suppose a guy has 11 trees on his lot and they are starting to compete for space and water. The ND model would stipulate that he cut a few feet off each one each year. But what’s going to happen? They’re all going to die. The correct answer is to remove a few to let the bigger ones survive and thrive.

What ND colleges should be shut down & no one would notice outside of 100-200 people?

Either Mayville or Valley City should be closed. And maybe one of either Lake Region or Bottineau. This will never happen though.

The problem is most of them are in the state constitution and can't be closed without an amendment. Agree that Mayville really needs to be merged into VCSU. Dickinson is a degree mill and an embarrassment to the rest of the system. I don't know enough about the junior colleges, but in general there's a nationwide shortage in the trades so I'd lean towards keeping them. If one's a lot worse than the others I'm ok with it going.

I would ask why this happened. That would give you a reference point for how to fix the underlying problem.

Consolidation and pooling of resources, instead of having 9 mediocre non-universities we should have 3 outstanding ones...
Not to mention the hypocrisy of super conservative ND lawmakers who 1) Hate gov't waste and 2) Hate spending money on higher-ed, breaking their necks to keep zombie schools open on the public dime

Valley City absorbs into NDSU
Mayville absorbs into und
dickinson absorbs into bismarck
that would help
I always love the wasted money to "shrink wrap" the valley city baseball bus or dickinson st "basketball" bus. just think of the money saved dumping 2-3 schools.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Does the constitution specify that each of those schools be a separate entity? Or just that there be an institution of higher education in those cities?

https://ndlegis.gov/constit/a08.pdf
Quote:
Section 6.
1. A board of higher education, to be officially known as the state board of higher
education, is hereby created for the control and administration of the following state
educational institutions, to wit:
a. The state university and school of mines, at Grand Forks, with their substations.
b. The state agricultural college and experiment station, at Fargo, with their
substations.
c. The school of science, at Wahpeton.
d. The state normal schools and teachers colleges, at Valley City, Mayville, Minot,
and Dickinson.
e. The school of forestry, at Bottineau.
f. And such other state institutions of higher education as may hereafter be
established.
I suppose you could try to argue that control and admin of a school includes closing it, but good luck with that.
As for Lurker's point, I believe this is fallout from the 1910's-20's political interference that caused NDSU to lose accreditation and the first ever recall of a state governor.

in regards to NDSU "You make your intentions known, and then you get invited. There is almost certainly at LEAST one conference that would send out an invitation if it was told the invitation would be accepted"

Well that conference is almost certainly CUSA, and I would guess our admin would almost certainly not accept it. Therefore we haven't seen it.
MAC or Mountain West? All day every day. Our admin had BETTER have let our consultants let those conferences' consultants know that we're interested...

I dont see it as hypocritical. Conservatism's central tenet is status quo. Those schools at all small, but the state constitution provides for them.
Those schools are also great for the communities they are in. Amending the constitution to eliminate those schools sounds unpopular. Maybe I'm wrong.
I'd be fine closing them or folding them into whoever. Just have a hunch that it wouldn't be popular. Its really easy as a conservative lawmaker in ND to justify those schools.
I think the idea of turning them into subsidiaries of NDSU and UND is more believable. Anyone have an idea of how much money that would save?
This all could have been dealt with about 140 years ago if they had just made UND, plopped it down in Bismarck, Fargo, or Grand Forks and given them the land-grant. Pump out a couple JC/tech schools and voila! North Dakota would have about 30 SEC championships ;)

Re: A new and better FBS thread
How does he know at least one conference would send an invite? Using his logic I should have asked all of Charlie's angels to my Jr. High dances and almost certainly one of them would have accepted.

I get why many don't agree with me on this, but you take the CUSA invite if it is there. Football-only if possible. Then you make the conference something decent and interesting. A conference with NDSU, Liberty, UTEP, WKU, and MTSU is inherently more interesting than any FCS conference, including the MVFC. TAKE THE INVITE and begin our FBS journey. The publicity we would get would be huge. JMU has been getting some good write-ups as a new SBC member. We'd have 10 times the coverage. Our move to FBS--even if settling for a less preferable conference--would be a major college sports story and people would tune it to see how it plays out and to see if we really are ready for the next level. Do it, President Cook. Even ESPN gets it.

They need a media contract. They need to show a plan that shows viability beyond 2 years. They need a vision. We'd have 44 more scholarships to fund, 44 more FCOA we'd need to fund, and we'd likely end up losing TV revenue by moving to CUSA. Every school is looking to jump outta that conference the first chance they get. I honestly think it would look better to an FBS conference as a MVFC that has rejected CUSA.
We jump to CUSA:
Best case, we jump to a good G5 conference (no different than now). Worst case, CUSA folds and we come limping back to FCS with a ruined brand and hope MVFC takes us back.
We have a lot to lose and not a lot to gain from jumping...

I was gonna say. It's major paycut to go to CUSA as it stands now. You'd do some irreversible damage with that
Anyone garner anything of value from Connelly today? I had too much going on to pay attention
