I’m realistic, but we need to puuuush to make up for the 30 years we stayed behind in D2 when we should’ve been IAA. I don’t want to see another 30 years of us hanging out in a league where we obviously don’t belong. Already 10 years into overstaying in FCS.
Our endowment and research profile are nuts now. We would be a an academic flag bearer for any conference outside the P5 and AAC. We are not a local university anymore. It’s okay to drop the aww shucks ND humility for a bit and really put on the full court press to ensure our seat at the table. We are a great university and any G5 conference would be better off having us.
Our consultant should be calling the G5 conferences and telling them that they may not need us now - but when shit hits the fan, here’s our number.
When I refer to 2nd tier, it's not because I don't think we have the talent to beat/compete with top tier teams, its more of 2nd tier from a financial POV. It's extremely unlikely that we'll ever be able to compete in a financial arms race against Bama, Texas, LSU, Ohio State, etc... in my lifetime.

I'm fairly convinced they want to stop playing & paying G5 schools as well as FCS and that this is the primary reason that they are moving toward megaconferences.

PERFECT! when NDSU is in Big 12 or SEC we won't have to play these puds from this area.

That would be best case scenario.... but I kinda think BigXII and Pac 12 are going to be the "2nd tier" as well and won't be getting as much TV revenue as they do now since their most recognizable names are being raided. Now, they may still get a decent deal with basketball revenue with schools like KU and KSU, but I think they will become the FBS version of the MVFC where all they "really" care about is basketball and football is just another sport. If my prediction is correct (and I in no way have a crystal ball) they won't be getting games & paydays from the B1G or SEC either.
Of course, I could be wrong here too, and the Big XII might actually absorb the best of the PAC 12, but even there I don't see NDSU making the cut (even though I've long thought that the BigXII was the right/ideal spot geographically for NDSU to land)

Regarding the 2nd tier of college football idea... NDSU is already in the THIRD tier of CFB, anyone who cant comprehend that is dellustional. There are clearly 2 levels of FBS. 2 very very very very very very distinct levels... and then there is FCS.
If they were to name levels honestly, FCS is D3, D2 is D4, and D3 is is D5.
Also its entirely possible that this realignment never gets to the FCS level. I hope it does, but it may not :/

Assuming B12 and PAC both survive this round, its very likely to cascade to MWC.
Conferences are rarely shut down, especially at the P5 level. They will still have $ to rebuild with.
Not that long ago, people were predicting the demise of B12 and it may end up being in the P3.
CUSA somehow (thus far) survived losing 9 schools, and they don't even have a media deal after this year.
While some of our fans are anxious, the best course right now really is "monitoring" to see how this all plays out.

Yes, monitoring is best. Monitoring and... monitoring and...
Monitoring and ...issuing a press release which touts the strengths of our university and athletic department, explains our understanding that the college athletics landscape is going through generational change at the moment, and declares our intent to make sure NDSU is in the best position for the future of the University - which includes the desire to move up a subdivision should a conference be interested

Administration should be positioning to make a move on MW, Big 12, or Pac 12 to take advantage of any opportunities that become available

You saw it on twitter yesterday. NDSU's success is a national story, and how successful we would be in FBS is a polarizing debate and a lot of people have an opinion on it. Release the press statement and keep the conversation going at the national (ESPN, CBS Sports, etc.) level. Literally worst case scenario is that we get a TON of free press until another shoe drops in this saga.
Do it.

I just like chirping at Goof fans who have tiny balls and tweet about NDSU and college football. The fear is so palpable.

Well, in a year or two, after what 75 years(?), the Goophs will finally be able to say they played in the Rose Bowl! (The stadium, not THE game). I can totally see PJ pimping how they went to the Rose Bowl.

Ever heard of the Southwest Conference. It used to be a big thing until it wasn't. Ten years before it died, nobody would have ever thought that would have happened. Obviously, the reasoning was a different situation than now but still...
The thing is, none of this crap has really happened before. I wouldn't be looking solely at history to tell us what is going to happen in this situation. It is all very volatile. Not saying to hide from it, just be careful of what you assume based on history.

That smells not of greed, but fear.
I found this on a different board.
Quote:
But it isn't greed. It's fear.
The reason so many here doubted the potential of this (B1G poaching PAC) is because you were focused on sports. IMO, this became evident when Texas moved. Institutions like Texas, which had resided in a world of its own making, and which sat atop yearly revenue leaders, doesn't move out of greed. Something had to scare the hell out of them for that to happen. So, what was it?
Demographic and Economic paradigm shifts amid an uncertain global political future.
These moves are a circling of the wagons for defense, strength in numbers.
They're probably going to stay with sure things or what they know is proven low risk.
Risk and a fear environment don't mix.

Conferences dropping is more common than you might think. Since the 1-A was formed for the 1978 season:
Socon and Ivy dropped to FCS in 1982.
MVC stopped sponsoring football in 1985, Big West in 2000, Big East in 2013(though that’s a bit more complicated), WAC in 2013.
Big 8 legally dissolved and all its members formed a new Big 12 in 1994.
Metro and Great Midwest merged to form C-USA in 1995.
Southwest dissolved in 1996.
The general trend is a major realignment in the first half of each decade that sees at least one conference leaving FBS. IMO PAC and C-USA are on the chopping block with their meaningful members just waiting for invites. ACC’s GOR is the only thing holding them together and they’re in a lot of trouble if that gets broken. If PAC still exists after this then they won’t be a “Power” conference anymore. The Big 12 has a new commissioner that appears to be excellent. That goes a long ways during times of crisis and uncertainty.

I thought he was pretty clear that he is not interested in FCS call-ups, but he would be open to PAC or Big 12 schools looking for a home if it comes to that.

I believe the MWC has a real shot of ending up with Washington State and Oregon State.

Only way Daddy is gonna be happy is if NDSU is in the Big 10 with Minnesota.
Boise State, Colorado State, Wyoming, NDSU 4 team POD to the Big 12.... renamed the Big 16.
4 teams in 4 pods

Exactly what someone who was secretly interested in FCS call-ups would say! :P
Are we really an FCS call-up at this point? We have an institutional endowment and yearly budget bigger than their median school. Not to mention higher research classification and academic standards. Give us MW revenue and we're one of the stronger universities in the conference.
In all seriousness, really no one is interested in FCS call-ups until they're really interested in FCS call-ups.

If Oregon and Washington dont get an invite I like the chances. Whenever you have Oregon, you are going to be in a conference that treams want. Orgeon is probably worth more than the entire Mountain West

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Nobody openly waiting/hoping on picking up PAC members is going to say they want FCS teams
No, that would not be in their best interest
NDSU talked to Thompson a year ago. I’m sure he knows we’re interested and available
IF it happens, NDSU would be stupid to turn down the MWC, and they wouldn’t
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
He didn't identify the schools as FCS..He just said institutions..3 of them are almost certainly New Mexico State, UTEP and Texas State..They call all the time..
Fox and CBS told the conference that they would not bump up the payout during the term of this contract. What some of you here see as arrogance or fear is really nothing more than money. Or the lack thereof..
The conference could lose some schools but that doesn't mean they will add to replace them..2026 is when things might happen..Then again, they might not.

Idk what your point is. Of COURSE NDSU has more notoriety and is more relevant than most G5 schools, but I'm not talking NDSU. I'm talking the 'tiers' of college football. and you're delusional if you think anyone thinks FCS is basically the same as G5, and anyone who thinks G5 is basically the same as P5. we are in the 3rd tier.
If our goal is to always be in the 2nd tier, we're factually NOT there right now. It is willful ignorance to pretend we are in the 2nd tier. we're not
