Re: A new and better FBS thread
I have no idea what the MW will do in the future but if they want NDSU they will invite you. Your AD may well have had conversations with Thompson before.
It should be noted, while Thompson can make recommendations, he has no vote. These decisions are ultimately voted on by academics. That may actually help your chances because there are 5 land grant schools. That does show some commonality. A great football team is a plus but only one factor being evaluated.

How can we blame Larson then?

You can blame him on a message board..That is what the platform is designed for..

OSU AD suggests that all FBS FB leave NCAA and adopt FCS-like playoff structure under CFP umbrella
They’d have to reign in NIL before the "lessers" agree, but lots of action starting now with imminent NCAA leadership change on the horizon
Something like this is much more likely than a split within the P5, IMO
There’s nothing in there about “reigning in” NIL. Not sure why there would be. If that’s what they wanted there wouldn’t be any reason to leave the NCAA. Seems like they want their own governance structure so that they’re free to make their own decisions without regard to what non-football schools want.

No, that's popping up elsewhere. Culhane was just talking about it.
And yes, if they can sort it out to their liking, then they won't leave the NCAA, but FBS splitting off is much more likely than the P5 splitting off or splitting internally, IMO. I think they'd prefer to stay but want more governance, and Emmert supplied absolutely none.
The sense I get is that everyone now thinks NIL is out of control, even the super-league teams. We'll see

What if anything has Jay Bilas said about this? He is (or was) a big supporter of this. I have not seen anything from him. But maybe I did not look in the correct spot.

Not sure, but he's the last guy I'd listen too on this
This is probably most recent
https://www.si.com/college/2022/05/0...aws-recruiting
Sounds like they'd rather have it go back under the table ;)
IMO, the easiest and most ideal scenario would be to place some kind of limits on NIL and the TP, keep FBS under the NCAA umbrella, and expand the CFP
Whether this happens or not is TBD

In any scenario, the top 10-20 teams are going to get nearly all of the top recruits when they can take their talents to the highest bidder and everyone else will be playing for something like the Frisco Bowl.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
The top schools have always signed the best players..That hasn't changed..Pay for play used to be under the table but now it is out in the open. My humble, mid major, alma mater pays for certain players now. I think every school in the MW does so as well..That's the deal these days..
This is all funded by boosters..

Yes, it's already like that, and now getting worse with open NIL. What would be best for mid-major FB? What would be best for mid-major BB? To this point, it seems they want to stay affiliated, from both perspectives: mid-majors don't want to leave the elites and the elites don't want to break away (really truly). Hard to know what will happen, but major change seems like it is always forced upon them, rather than chosen. Emmert just waived a white flag on this front.
To me, FBS minus the uber rich, with a reasonably sized playoff, would be ideal for NDSU, but it might not happen. And if it doesn't, going FBS still seems like the right thing to do. You've won 9 of the last 11, and you really don't fit in the landscape of FCS at this point. You'll never sniff a natty, but you can reap some degree of monetary reward and compete for conference titles against more appropriate talent. That's pretty much what true mid-major hoops is now, no?
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
Lets get real. The executives, management and administrators only think that NIL is out of control because now some more of the money around the margins is going to someone other than them.

This would probably mean something else the MW has looked into..If they lose a couple members, they are unlikely to add replacements.

Will the “real” NIL supporters please stand up? You know who you are, and those of us (minority here) told you so.

It’s always a terrible day when labor realizes their value.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Do out of state athletes have to file taxes for that money in the state they go to school at? Someone at the college responsible for helping with that? It's income?

Do you know anyone who’s employer does their taxes for them? College students work and pay taxes all of the time. This is not terribly difficult.

Yep—like owning and paying your student loan for gender study degree or the like.

His point was that the NIL and other payments could be taxed out-of-state/by other states similar to pro athletes.
E.G.: Do a commercial that crosses state lines, or something otherwise similar to that. Lots of layers ….

Re: A new and better FBS thread
so are we gonna go FBS or wtf is the point anymore
win 17 more fcs titles in shitsville Texas? literally was a snoozefest down there last year

If they’re worried that they can’t figure out the income tax I suppose they could just turn down the money.

Holy man. I just have trouble believing 17 to 24 year olds are going to do the right thing. Whoever wants to pay them to play would be wise to make sure that happens go get a return on investment.
Suck when someone can't play because they didn't pay taxes.
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
They can vote in their home state so I was wondering about taxes.

The fact that I've asked the nil tax question 3 times on here in the last 6 months and never gotten a real answer actually tells me all I need to know. It's going to get someone burnt.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
Do they fill out w4's? I honestly don't know but am interested. I have no freaking clue how tik tok revenue works eh. That's beyond me. Or like the Talbert shirt I bought. Do these kids hire someone to do this? It's not like being a college athlete and going to school take up much time eh. They've got time to balance the books at spring break.

Asking so you know if you can hire out of state kids to advertise the meth and expand your consumer base. Smart thinking bro.

I'm disappointed I had to use Google to answer my questions. I always Bisonville first.

Re: A new and better FBS thread
I guess h and r block wanted new customers more then our resident audit because they had a hell of a lot better answer. Just go to h and r block during spring break and don't worry about it eh.

Yeah, check my handle again. I’ve never been paid to prepare a tax return in my life. I’m not a tax professional. My only point is all this hand wringing over these young adults making money and oh my god how are they ever going to pay their income tax is fucking absurd.
-

You must have been way more mature then me when you were that age. Although I was probably to immature to even play college sports eh. It wasn't hand wringing. It was me using my story that I live in experiences and then being genuinely curious. But yeah you got me good.

This will go over great on this board I’m sure, but what about an NIL "tax" on mega-dollar-FBS (i.e. upper P5) deals, where say after fed/state comes out, 10 % goes back to help the FBS lessers? Just have to define an upper threshold that triggers it.
I just don’t see how you put this Genie back in the bottle, so the only option going forward is to regulate NIL. Without something like this, it seems inevitable that the P5 will fracture in about 10 years.
Scenarios sorted by probability (IMO)
FBS stays affiliated with NCAA
FBS separates from NCAA
P5 fractures and the very top P5s leave NCAA (best case for NDSU)
P5 leaves the NCAA (I think this is the least likely)
-
Re: A new and better FBS thread
soooo no FBS for NDSU for the 10th straight year huh?

The teams have been taking 100 percent of the revenue and the players have gotten nothing ever and now that they’re being allowed to make a few marketing bucks off of their name and talent you think the teams should get a slice of that too?! How about the teams actual pay them for their skills first!

Alienation of workers from their labor bro. Hardly the first example of that in our corporationist system. All organizations have their hands out when their laborers start bringing in extra cash.
In all seriousness, I would love to see the kids get paid how much they were actually worth. That way about 95% of them would realize how important school actually is.
