Do people in North Dakota get to watch it on espn3...or is it blacked out?
Like you, the "spite" comment was pretty funny to me.
There have been like 4 games in the past decade where you could say scheduling un_ would have been more advantageous for NDSU than who they scheduled. All four of them ended up because the Bison got backed into a corner by other institutions. Otherwise, scheduling OOC FCS opponents from outside the area and FBS opponents will always be great for NDSU. Some are probably equal to a un_ on the schedule, but none are worse. I continue to want to see NDSU schedule OOC games with opponents from other conferences mixing it up with the top teams from the Big Sky and other FCS conferences. One FBS, one top FCS, and one tune up every year would be perfect. un_ every 5 years or so is about the most I ever care to see. I want to see other FCS programs and scheduling un_ takes away from that.
I can but that is only because my Fiancee has a Comcast email. It's really convenient for me to watch the CFL, Arena Football, or Bison Basketball games.
Obviously, I go to the home games but I watch the away games on there also.
A lot of people cannot around Fargo because of the internet providers. I am not sure if people with Midcontinent can or not.
Not that I recall. How I remember it....uNOd kept hounding us for a game and Big G said fine we will play you, but its going to be 2 games both in Fargo and all you get a $100K per game (AKA Peanuts) . The said F that to which Big G Said, fine, OK, no worriers. Once Big G retired the unides came back and said hey AD Mathews how about a home for home game and the interim AD "PM" said, NO! The offer on the table is 2 in Fargo or nothing and a hundred K guarantee. The Sun dogs countered with 2 in Fargo but they get a higher payout. PM counted with no the deal...it is what it is take it or leave it. Pressured by a certain big time donor they WHooooooo accepted. That is how I remember it going. I am sure the bunker folks recall it going differently :-)
I was referring to why we scheduled Weber.
As for the timeline you provided, it's pretty accurate (as far as someone with zero visibility into that can say at least), but you have to backup a few years.
Big G fell to the pressure and submitted a home and home
F said FU, we want an ongoing game scheduled
Big G said, here's an every other year agreement
F said FU, we want one every year
Big G said, how about two in Fargo
F said HELLZ YEAH!
Oh tony please let this thru.
Gene was never ever ever going to sign a contract, he was pissed by 2003 press conf and getting back stabbed for years by scheduling and the legislature.
Enter Prakash, when gene left faison & Kelley scrambled to the phones calling Prakash. Prakash was interim and ALREADY ON HIS WAY OUT OF NDSU VIA RETIREMENT..
Prakash was so honored to talk to Kelley the president that he begged Bresciani to play the game because of the whole legislature, good for funding bullcrap.
Guess what.. Prakash went out with a bang like the fraternity at the end of animal house. This was and is a black eye for NDSU and WILL diminish all we've accomplished over the last 10 years without the anchor of und around us.
I'm sorry, but small town folks like jack micheals pinto, heitcrap and your grandpa from hoopoe are getting their jollies off this weekend. But this hurts NDSU and it's future growth. Period and I am selling my tickets in the exchange I tell NDSU donations every single time they call me. (Go FBS & get und off the schedule and I'm in for $2500/year
That set the tone for EVERYTHING that came after. I will concede that they had a valid reason not to schedule us in 2004. I would also argue that they KNEW the DII rules would change for subsequent years so they could have played in 2005 and on without hurting their playoff chances. A simple call to GT offering to do that would probably have been enough. NOPE. They didn't talk to him and went straight to a Press Conference to announce it AND upped the ante by saying they wouldn't be scheduling in any sport (I don't think I made that last part up/misremembered)
The real question is will the new AD be open for future games. Listening to ML on the radio, he essentially said we are well past the rivalry and in the future we will look to schedule an FBS and top tier FCS. Plan on more top FCS.
Agreed, seems to have a solid view of what SU needs to do to keep climbing. Also I like that he was not a native NDAK. NDakotan's seems to doubt or fail to embrace their full potential especially when it comes to the state, business HIED and the like. FYI, that is not smack, but rathert an observation after living here for 20 something years
I also remember, "It's not a higher level"...
Kolpack doesn't seem to be buying it... He must not read the Grand Forks Herald...

My suspicion is the two fan bases likely see it slightly different. NDSU folks see it as an interesting out of conference game.. UND folks see it as an opportunity to match up against the defending national champion, who happens to be in the same state.
The history certainly makes the game more interesting, at least to me, but I am an old guy... But I can understand it being a bigger deal from Grand Forks. Honestly a lot like us vs. the Gophers.
I kind of wonder if that wouldn't have tipped Big Sky our way. Would have been a 16 team conference with 2 divisions? Unless they left the UC-Davis and Cal-Poly out in 2012 and be at the 14 they're currently at. Would have had the 4 dakota schools, Montana schools and either UNC and Weber State/Idaho and ISU in east and rest in the west? But that's in the past dreams!
Granted I'm happy with how things turned out though and wouldn't have it any other way now.
Same here.....Being raised in MT, I really wanted us in the big Fluffy, but I am glad it turned out the way it did. The MVFC is so much better in so many ways. It really did turn out well...now we are in the big 12 for Wrestling and things are really looking great for SU
For me it isn't any more of a rivalry if the game were against VCSU this weekend.
So, you're never going to complain when the Legislature treats the schools differently or the media applies, what seems to be, different standards to reporting events at the two schools?
You see, there's a constant litany of comparisons made between the schools by fans on both sides. It's also incredibly apparent that the people who deny the rivalry the loudest are the ones who perpetuate it. They're the ones first to howl butthockey or trash the successes of the other school. It's actually funny to observe.
That's a valid position to take. Just keep in mind that the FCS Program's you just named can't be part of the plan without giving up an FBS every other year or occasionally taking advantage of the 12 game option years.
Basically, those programs will demand home and home contracts meaning the FBS can't be scheduled or you must live with 5 home games those years.
Some jackwagon was trying to use the fact that student tickets sold out as proof of how BIG this game was. When I notified him that they do this for every game, he as like "No, they sold out like really fast. What a dumb ass.
In all of this .. ..debauchery... isnt the only question worth asking, what has UND done in the last 10 years for anyone to consider this anything but a rivalry game , simply for being a rivalry? This is an old blood, nothing but a they said, we said, brother fight. Its irrelavent to both schools schedules respectively. This is about generating excitement about our biggest football teams in the state. That is enough for it to be fun for the alumni, students, and players alike, is it not? Talk championships and superiority all you want, but these schools have historic games that EVERYONE who was a part of them remembers.
I will say this, back in the day you were on one side or the other. Now we have fans who cheer for both teams. Sioux Hockey/Bison football. Bandwagon fans who cheer for whomever is doing better and go back and forth. During the rivalry you werent friends with any UND people and UND ppl werent friends with Bison ppl.
That doesnt sound very North Dakota or that true. Even the old duffers kept it in perspective.

Yep !
Imagine College GameDay here and some bimbos (male and female) yelling chants that can be perceived as racial slurs to the Sioux Indians in the U.S. ... how would that reflect on NDSU, Fargo, North Dakota. It would be the last time ESPN would be in Fargo, and it would destroy the extremely positive reputation Fargo presently has with them.
