Welcome to Cole Payton!

Interesting comment here from the Lincoln Journal Star sports guy:

Ron Powell
@ronpowell_ljs

The Westside junior and top returning quarterback in the state next season commits to the defending FCS national champions.

Interesting as in Nebraska just offered Heinrich Haarberg, Kearney Catholic’s QB

Good year for QB’s in the Cornhusker state!
TJ Urban - Millard South’s QB - also has multiple offers - Air Force, SDSU, Illinois State, Western Illinois, Fighting Hawks

Ron Powell’s article on Cole Payton commit to NDSU:

https://www.google.com/amp/s/journalstar.com/sports/high-school/football/states-top-returning-high-school-qb-payton-commits-to-north-dakota-state/article_88b309a8-ca0b-522f-b557-b56969da132d.amp.html

Payton, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound left-hander, is the top returning high school quarterback in the state this coming fall. He led Westside to the Class A state championship game a year ago by rushing for 872 yards and 15 touchdowns and completing 60 percent of his passes for 1,986 yards and 24 TDs.

You'd think a lack of Lefty QBs would have more to do with elite prospects going to chase the money playing baseball than not being able to play the position.

A couple of interesting nuggets as he committed on the spot once the offer was made.

He was getting interest from a couple of D1s for being a possible linebacker prospect as he must be a very good athlete but he committed to NDSU because he wanted to play QB.

We had an offer out to a teammate Cade Haberman - who selected Northern Illinois a couple weeks ago.

https://www.hudl.com/profile/9248746/Heinrich-Haarberg - this one of the other QBs in Nebraska who just got an offer from Huskers. Fun to compare the two.

I appreciate that he wants to play QB and we will give him the chance. But if/when he gets beat out, he’s gonna be a helluva linebacker. To my scouting eye, his arm talent is mediocre but his athleticism is top notch.

He got into the 2011 Championship Game for a snap or two after Brock got his bell rung on a play. Brock either came back in after one play or for the next series, I don't recall exactly when. And recall Esley moved from the QB position not because he couldn't play it or wouldn't have been successful, he just had the misfortune of having a No. 2 overall draft choice a year behind him and would have continued to be the No. 2 QB. He just wanted to play and we were better as a team because of it. I wonder if he has a shot at the NFL as a linebacker if he comes in as a LB from day 1?

"With his athleticism and ability to run, he had some interest from FBS schools as a linebacker.

“I’m a quarterback,” he said, “and NDSU believes in me as a quarterback.”

Payton is the third Westside player in the 2021 class to commit to a Division I school, following Avante Dickerson (Minnesota) and Cade Haberman (Northern Illinois)."

Cole looks to be the next great Bison QB. Wow, he puts the ball right where it needs to be every time. Wish NDSU had a chance to get the TE in the video (maybe since he appreciated Cole's throws so much he will follow Cole......wishful thinking). 6'5", good frame at 225 lbs and great hands. NDSU needs some incoming 6'5" or 6'6" TE's. Amazed how many recent TE recruits are only 6'3" and 6'4". Entz and Roehl must be more focused on blocking. Our 6'6" TE's right now are awesome, but they are both juniors (Gindorff and Babicz)!

I'm not sure what it is. Our guys always seem to look smaller than they are. Lance looks 5' 10" and 185, rather than his true 6' 3" and 225 or so. Our tackles never look like their true 300+ pound frames.

Maybe I should start wearing green and gold consistently, to look a little slimmer.

3 star (247) Heinrich Haarberg - Kearney NE (Catholic) Let the cherry picking begin. With all the attention NDSU is getting lots of P5 teams will be looking to steal our recruits away. Total BS, but doubt Cole would give up QB to play LB. Looks like Nebraska is just as bad at evaluating in state talent as Minnesota (wanted Trey to play DB). Excerpt from above 247 article:
Nebraska is very interested in Payton — but where would the Huskers recruit this jumbo athlete, that looks every bit like a Tim Tebow (https://247sports.com/Player/Tim-Tebow-24970) for Westside? The initial thought is linebacker. At 6-foot-3, 220 pounds, Payton is tough as hell. He seeks contact. He seeks action. The Bison got a hell of a player and one 247Sports should reevaluate at some point.

Creighton Prep’s AJ Rollins - 6’ 6” 220 - TE/DL - 2021
just committed to Nebraska.

Teammate Alex Bullock - 6’ 2” 180 - WR/DB/ATH
Has a SDSU offer, others are paying attention.

But Omaha Westside has several FBS recruits, in addition to the FCS commit QB - including the top-ranked prospect in Nebraska for 2021 - Avante Dickerson (CB/WR 5’ 11” 165, Minnesota Gopher commit)

Another Westside player - Koby Bretz (6’ 2” 185 - DB)
also just committed to Nebraska. Klieman & Co were in good shape recruiting Bretz for awhile, but he waited to see if the Cornhuskers would offer, they finally did and byebye KState.

Certain programs destroy QB . . . they don’t develop them and they don’t improve them. Part of that is style of offenses, and part of that is the mindset that we are not developmental, come in ready to compete.

NE historically is terrible on QBs, gets them injured, destroys their confidence. MN isn’t great, better than they used to be.

Valid points. I would/will be more concerned if there’s a change in-season (injury). When they have all spring and fall camps then I really won’t worry about it.

It can be tough on the defenses too. Usually defenses like to make QBs scramble in the direction of their off arm since it's tougher for them to throw accurately going in that direction so they'd have to adapt to a lefty. They also may have to switch their DEs if they match up their stronger pass rushing DE with the weaker pass blocking OT (would be a LDE vs RT with a righty QB or RDE vs LT with a lefty QB). I don't think it's a big deal but I've even heard that it's a bit different catching the ball from a lefty QB since the ball spins clockwise coming at you instead of counterclockwise like a righty's throw would... something that might negate a potential INT for a defender that isn't used to it.

I don't think it's a big deal but I've even heard that it's a bit different catching the ball from a lefty QB since the ball spins clockwise coming at you instead of counterclockwise like a righty's throw would... something that might negate a potential INT for a defender that isn't used to it.

Exactly. Saw a highlight this weekend where a QB (Tua T.) was rolling out and suddenly made a pass that a right-hander couldn't make. It seemed to surprise an NFL defense.

But, really, I suspect that Cole Payton has only been playing left-handed because he was bored beating teams by 30 points every game. I suspect that he's going to pull a Princess Bride deal in a game.

Has anyone ever watched an ambidextrous qb? ……...never heard of one...….. Wouldn't that be a hoot !! I've umpired baseball where a player played outfield right handed and pitched left handed. In this wide world of football, there has to be at least one.....

Back a long time ago I had a pitcher who was ambidextrous. That was kind of fun. He just had to declare before each batter which side he was going to throw from. Baseball there can be an advantage to doing that. Football I don't know how much of an advantage there would be. The ball is going to be different to catch from each side so it would be tough on the receivers. It would be tough for his line also. So I would think in football the coach would make the QB choose and then stay with it as I can only see disadvantages for the team by letting the QB stay ambidextrous.

Mahomes has made a couple "ugly" left handed throws hasn't he? Guess wouldn't call him ambidextrous being they were pretty ugly looking throws if I remember right?

Didn't Carson throw a few warm up throws left handed back when he had the broken wrist?

Our offense is already tough to prepare for by college standards. Throw in a left handed QB and good luck prepping in the playoffs with 6 days notice

Looks like Nebraska was standoffish early but Iowa State looked interested a couple years ago. Both went hard when he went bonkers in his senior year but he was already committed to NDSU.

Apparently Easton came to visit the school and hung out last summer. NDSU is awesome, family, etc.

I love this kid already.

That relationship seems like a good hook to keep him in the boat considering his bro is the best demonstration of next level potential at the QB position. That with the fact he already flat out said thanks but no thanks before even meeting with Nebraska in person gives me the warm and tinglies. Nebraska is likely set at QB anyway so if he turned down Iowa State at QB and Nebraska for anything else, seems like NDSU is in a good spot retention wise.

He redshirted during the 2009 season behind Mertens, I think.

As it relates to his 2010 competition with Jose, by the middle of the season, coaches seemed to want to move on from Jose and start Brock but everyone forgets that he had a hard time staying healthy. He seemed brittle that year, which seems absurd now that hindsight shows us the toughness of his next three years.

What has always bugged me is that Mertens was never allowed to run, which was central to his game. The story was that there was no good backup option if he got hurt. That makes sense to me for the 2008 season but for 2009, Brock was there. My guess is that he just didn't show IT during practice his true freshman year.

Exactly. By all stats, Cam was better than both the true Frosh QBs at UND and SDSU, and his HS competition was as good or better than theirs. We had/have coaching/scheme issues for sure. And, to those that disagree, I’ll “footnote” the Game-day threads here and all the posts/comments about the play calling. Stick/Wentz/Lance wouldn’t have done much better IMO, other than just say eff it, and either call a different play or take off running on every pass play that didn’t develop, which was 90%.

Probably. Still not the guy I'd want starting the next 4 years though. Think NDSU has proven it has a higher ceiling at that position than I think Cam is able to reach. Just my opinion.

Maybe we need more old associate head coaches? Like a coach retirement center or something. Imagine all the knowledge.

Cam is not a special talent and diSplayed nothing special. Not saying he is bad, he’s just another FCS qb. NDSU can definitely do better. Playcalling/offensive coaching was terrible. Put them together and our offense....wasn’t good.

Can’t one just watch a season from Messingham’s play calling and develop an offense of of that? My worry is that all of the plays are there to choose from but once game time comes around the ol’ blinders come on and out comes the same 5 plays that we see all the time.

Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkI don't disagree on the scheme issues. But I wonder how much the playbook was trimmed down for both Cam (and maybe Zeb) in an attempt to keep our run first identity while also not overwhelming the QB?

Where Brock, Carson, Easton and Trey would look at the defense, call out their protections and/or switch to play B or C I'm willing to bet that Cam wasn't personally ready for that jump yet after he was thrust into the lineup due to an inaccurate, inadequate QB ahead of him that everyone thought was going to perform at a high level.

Now, it's on the coaches to work with what they have as well and come up with play designs and options that he can execute. So that falls back on the coaches for sure.

I can see a serviceable backup QB role for Cam in the future (assuming QPII and/or Cole Payton retain the starting role we all think they will have) and maybe even challenging for a starting role if and when he gets more command of the playbook and verbiage

Everybody talking about skill players with inadequate skills, play callers with no plays, schemes that just weren't very schemy etc, etc. To my eye our OL play just wasn't up to the standard we have become accustomed to. I think it all starts there. No doubt these other faults exists as well but I bet all skill guys look less skilled when they have a second or two less to work with. Play callers have one or two fewer plays they can call when they know that it just can't be executed.

Don't know. I'm not much of an xo person but that seems like the place to start to me. And for sure if you are trying to run through the A gap and not getting at least a couple of yards to begin with then there is perhaps no reason to believe you are going to be getting the 4 and 5 in the third and fourth like we used to do, so try calling something else.

It's easy to look good calling plays when you have a bevy of NFL talent. That team had either a rostered or practice squad NFL player at QB, WR (Shepherd), TE (Ellefson), RB (Bruce), and multiple O-lineman (Radunz, Z Johnson, T Volson, maybe C Volson too). They had an amazing offense that year mainly because they were supremely talented not because Messingham was a wizard.

It's not like Messingham was Lincoln Riley. He wasn't a particularly successful OC at Iowa St or Montana St before he got to NDSU and K-State hasn't been lighting it up since he got there either. I think Roehl could learn a lot from him though, mainly how to break tendencies and how to let your players take advantage of mismatched defenders. That all takes time and experience though, you can't just watch another OC and expect to be better without understanding all the nuance that goes into calling plays. If that were the case there would be a lot fewer shitty OCs than there are.

Seems very early to say he's not able to meet the standard. None of those NDSU's other QBs have had to play as true freshmen. And the bar many here seem to have for QB at NDSU is just not sustainable. From 2013-2020, there is not a single team other than maybe Clemson who has had as much success at the quarterback position, and their success isn't sustainable either.

Frankly, he seems like precisely the type of QB NDSU should strive for. He had offers from the rest of the conference. He's from our part of the country. On paper its a great fit. He showed very good potential throughout the season. He got one start and had a tough day. It is what it is. I think everyone here would be pretty pissed if their customers/employers formed their opinion on your potential based on a rough day at work in your first couple months on the job.

Quincy Patterson hasn't shown anything to indicate he's going to be a Rockstar, and this Payton guy hasn't played a snap in college.

I'll defer to CAS and others on how much was Roehl's fault or the players fault. I do have vivid memories of Brady Quinn being trash as a freshman before Charlie Weis turned him into a Heisman finalist.

Tl;dr: doesn't make sense to write off because of one bad start while simultaneously hyping guys who have also had only a bad start (Patterson) and a high school senior who has not played a down in college.

That's a very good point. The oline definitely had some growing pains. Hopefully they are much improved this fall. I think another issue was when Zeb started flinging interceptions and putting a young defense in bad situations the coaching staff got way too conservative with the play calling. That doesn't work too well when you don't have much of a running game or very many running backs to speak of either. In turn you're just not putting the team in the best situation to be successful especially on early downs. Too many 3rd and long or obvious passing situations. Just a lot of issues with this spring fiasco.

Not sure on rehab, but can’t be stated more strongly IMO that all of our players need Kramer conditioning. That’s not saying they haven’t been working hard, but the last several seasons of Natty’s/deep playoff runs have caught up to us when it comes to offseason training. Everyone talks about the additional reps, etc., but the smaller calendar to lift and condition is huge, and other teams have had that opportunity. I’ll reference SDSU’s Oline as an example.

Bentrim, I think. Ryan Johnson played a bit as a true freshman.

Considering that transfers are uncommon at NDSU and were even rarer back in the day, we're talking a very small sample size. I thought Staus did a pretty good job. Stacy Robinson transferred as a QB and ended up in the NFL as a WR so there's that.

Yea, so pretty unprecedented, especially with the west coast offense. My overall point is people are being way too hard on Miller. Not that I think he’s gonna be a super stud like the last guys but I wouldn’t pencil him in as a lifetime backup already. Give the kid a bit of a chance to grow.

Yes, yes I see this is a consideration and indeed the cave-in would be tragic most assuredly. But I don't expect the exalted Kramer would require an altered coiffure in order to imbue the youngster's frame with additional lean tissue, would he?

Exactly. The Bison program has had a long history of kicking ass with long hair, facial hair, and the intention of dishing out pain. I think a little mop top fits right in. Hell, I look at that picture and wonder how some high school kid could look so damn confident standing next to an NFL player. I would have been in awe.

And from the book of St. Easton, chapter 16, verses 9-12: And after the period of great tribulation, a prophet of great wisdom came forth to the Herd. He raised up the skin of the pig, and he chucked it. He ran it. He did what he wanted with it, and the vermin skattered. Many southern pilgrimages were made in the years that followed, and bunnies lamented. Here ends the reading.

...this is the word of the herd.

Impressive speed. Plus, I'm pretty sure that's the play we run on 3rd and long. Right after the dive and jet sweep on first and 2nd downs.

That run was a Tyler Roehl wet dream.
Basically, give it to the athletic running QB and make me look good after a run up the gut and a jet sweep and it's now 3rd and 8

Yes that jersey thing was so bizarre. I've watched that long run by Payton a few times and I am pretty convinced the only reason he gets tackled is because he thinks the guy that tackles him is on his team...

It could be. I had to watch that play a couple of times to verify that the tackler was on the field when the play was started. He was covering a receiver on the other side of the field and and then took an angle where he might have expected to tackle the runner at the goal line.

I can tell you never played serious, competitive sports.

Sometimes, even in competitive events, you don’t take that shot—>had ACL injury written all over it.

And I’m assuming he had a good, knowledgeable coach that didn’t play him much after that shit tackle.

I've had 2 knee reconstructions after being tackled like this 30+ years ago. To this day, I wear a ridiculous brace when I do serious hiking, play court sports or snowboard.

It's a stupid tackle for the defender as well. Really easy to get seriously hurt that way. The ball carrier can eventually walk away from that injury. A defender might not in the worst case scenario.

If the defender had any neck muscles or traps, he’s fine—no ligament damage. ACL for Cole could have been legit career ender.

I know that these are athletes with a more elite bend to them but I also know that we teach our players to bring the head to the back side to avoid a knee to the noggin or a potential of neck compression. We also teach being in total body control as a part of the tackle progression. Much of our training has been to follow the methodology that the Seahawks train their guys with...head behind, wrap and gator roll if possible (which it could have been here with proper technique), preempted by all of the important (controlled) positional work that leads up to contact. Admittedly, I'm very much a novice at best and just coached youth but I'm also around the HS program a ton and see the same thing there. Maybe I'll need to look at it again but when I saw the tackle initially, I winced for the defender first.

I feel silly debating this with you. You have forgotten more football knowledge that I will ever know...

Kid was taking bad angles the entire play and took another one right at the end and was about to get beat on the cutback. Dove and caught an ankle or Payton takes it to the house. Let's freak out about a tackle though.

Yep. Our last high school game I was stuck going against two large kids with wrestling scholarships to Minnesota. I got my ass handed to me all game because I wouldn't go after knees or ankles. Might be the only time I took the "high road"....

Let's be clear.... smart players always go low in a heads up tackle against a freight train. Stay low, keep head up and drive through the knees to thighs and wrap up. That is a clean play and injury risk is low.

It is taking shots at knees at angles or when defenseless that is terrible.

Last year was a little rough for me. Our QB couldn't scramble out of a wet paper bag. The sight of a recruit who is physically capable of running the ball may have made me a bit excited.

Also hahaha at him riding the bench his entire career.
