Yep. Fargo is the fastest growing medium sized city in the nation and our TV market is basically the entire state of North Dakota western MN. You really need to combine Fargo, Bismarck, Williston, and Minot for an accurate TV market size number.

That's not true for some so called larger market teams who not only aren't the big dog in their entire state, but sometimes not even #1 in their own market. Ask anyone if Omaha has any TV advantage over Lincoln. It's laughable.

If those were all combined, where would the equivalent market rank?

The site below lists the Fargo-Valley City market at 115th with 240K TV homes. Add the 164K for western ND (139th largest) and you have a North Dakota market which is the 74th largest similar in size to Spokane, Omaha, and Rochester.

the TV market aspect is a total BS talking point for the Anti FBS haters.

the % of people watching NDSU in this market kicks the crap out of a lot of FBS colleges.

if the City of Fargo gave $15 mill & 25 years of no taxes on a building downtown, why cant they do that for NDSU & expand the Fargodome?

or the $20 million city offices

I don't know where to find the stats, but the first measure is how many TVs are watching Bison football right now on Saturdays. You can't start anywhere but there. Then from the availability within the markets, there has to be some reasonable projections in a G5 or P5 conference. Now you have to do the same for BB. Those are the first figures that NDSU has to bring to the table before anyone would take a look.

If every one of those 400k homes with a TV were tuned into a Bison game on Saturdays, that probably get close to bringing in the bare minimum to get a token look today. Of course, that isn't happening. The bottom line is that the big money comes from the TV deals and a school has to show it can bring enough viewers to the table to cash in with advertisers. ESPN is certainly helping with national branding that could turn NDSU into a commodity that transcends the regional area. Even then, there has to be some long term projections keeping that going and how to work in possible apathy into the equation.

Boise State didn't garner new fans because of their program. They garnered the viewership of football fans because they were willing to play on other nights of the week and fans wanted to watch football. Any football. It was a gimmick that worked and Boise was the recipient of it. There certainly isn't new BSU fans out of it all. NDSU could pull off gaining new fans out of more exposure because everything about ND and Fargo is straight up goofy and interesting to anyone not from here. The interesting part of all of this is how much and for how long. I don't think there is enough there for any P5 conference to chance adding a school who might not bring equal food to the table and we all know the G5 is a lateral move at the moment.

I like dreaming as much as the next guy, but the reality is football isn't enough and we just don't have the support necessary yet to be as attractive. The wild card in all of this is ESPN. They are kingmakers and strange things happen when they get involved in things.

What you're talking about is secondary. Rutgers and Maryland were added to the B1G because of the amount of cable customers those markets added to the B1G subscriber list, not how many viewers might watch the channel. There were obviously residual benefits in advertising revenue as the B1G could show advertisers they had more people watching the channels since the subscriber base was bigger, but it is nowhere near what they were able to gain from subscriber fees. That is the reason the actual size of the market matters more than the percentage of viewers tuning in at a particular time.

Abcdumb- youre right about big ten & cable with BTN

But you're very wrong with the rest . Mountain West Mac even big12 want more exposure & reach. Broadcast tv gives them that especially using 1 of the 4 major networks and knowing that they are reaching the MOST viewers for thier advertisors

Staying in the second tier of D1 is what Larsen and Taylor before him have been consistently saying for some time now.
The only reason some people get lost in thought is because it's unfamiliar territory.

NDSU ISNT IN THE 2nd tier. P5 G5 FCS D2 d3. We are in 3rd right now. Furthermore playing a FBS team every 4 years like the Olympics doesn't give us a taste of FBS! What is Deans smoking & why doesn't a reporter in this town ask him point blank. "Why haven't you or your AD approached the Mountain West?" (Hell Wichita st did & they don't have football!)
