Your liking hockey and others who are interested in hockey arent very good reason to add hockey. Have you considered all the ramification of such a move. And I mean ALL of them. Such as Title 9 requirements? Funding etc etc etc.
How does NDSU benefit? Whats the upside? And I mean REAL upside not pie in the sky rhetoric.

You don't give out trophies for losing. Trophies for sucking. That's a communist idea. You don't get a trophy for losing. You get a piece of pizza and you shut up. Trophies for losing? What the hell happened to us?

Would actually like to see a real sport that people care about like swimming.
I like hockey, fun sport to watch live but here are the issues.
1. Women's hockey: Garbage sport that nobody wants to watch and is extremely expensive. Title 9 basically means it has to be added. You know the top dogs in hockey will want to do full cost of attendance, that means you are paying that out to the women as well. Making it even more expensive then it currently is.
2. UND: Hockey is their everything, they have a beautiful arena, tremendous history and are in a premier conference. All the hockey and casual hockey fans around here support them and the only way to turn them is to win at a high level. NDSU playing in the WCHA and hosting games at Scheels will look second rate in comparison. Maybe if you are MSUM being that is ok but that is not ok for me. Being a hockey power in this region would cost barrels of money and it would have to come from somewhere even with a few wealthy donors backing the program.
3. Flexibility: We add hockey and we are devoting all this money and resources there. I think those resources are better served enhancing the sports we have, I would much rather be great at what we offer athletically without hockey instead of mediocre across the board with hockey. Lets the G5 and upper FCS merges, football will need more resources to compete....you want to hamstring the program with a hockey ball and chain it has to drag around?
I will say again I like hockey and there was a time when I wanted NDSU to add it but that time has come and gone. Back when the WCHA was the premiere conference I thought it was a doable idea if they would let us in. But so much in college hockey has changed and it isn't really enticing to be a start-up unless you have big money backing you and a top conference that wants you.
Basketball should be our niche after football, let the others have hockey.
Gabe nailed it, whatever happened to the guys who were looking into bank rolling MSUM? If that cash could be used to build NDSU centric practice rinks and locker rooms at Scheels + a good chunk towards an endowment why not? Probably kills FBS though unless we could get a women's team fully *endowed*
Unless we can raise a fuck load of money, its a terrible idea. But in a perfect world if we could raise a fuck load of money, and by a fuck load I mean enough to increase funding to all sports including enough to fund an FBS move, it could be a money maker. Maybe not as much as we would like to think with womens losses eating into the profits.
We would have to spend big to be competitive but if Duluth can win a Championship so can we. Heck if Ferris State, St Cloud, Mankato, and Rochester technand half these other teams Ive never heard of can make the frozen 4, we could do it. Now lets say best case we do end up making the Championship or the Frozen 4? Nationally nobody would care. Regionally many would care. In North Dakota and Minnesota it would be a huge deal. Basically the benefit would be possibly a few bucks, some poorly rated playoff games on ESPN, and the Midwest hockey crowd would certainly notice us and raise our profile. Maybe a few potential student athletes may think were a big deal and think of us in a brighter light. Probably get some more year round TV coverage. You gotta remember people who love hockey are obsessed and THINK everyone cares even though they don't. May get the occasional NHL star. So overall it would have some benefits. Of course it could potentially take away some fans of other sports who have to choose. But as a fan it would be cool for more year round entertainment .
