Best DI Football Team in the Tri-State Area - AGAIN
I've been a Gopher fan as far back as I can remember. I can sort of remember cheering for QB Sandy Stephens when the Gophers last won the Rose Bowl. However, with a few exceptions, the state of Gopher football has been horrible for the past 40 years. It's no wonder that the real diehard Gopher fans are those 80 year old guys with those ragged old Gopher jackets.
I got two degrees from NDSU in the early 1980's and then I cheered for NDSU and the Gophers at the same time when we were DII. However, once we went DI, it has become much more difficult to cheer for both teams. For the first time ever, I actually cheered against the Gopher was in 2006 when we played in the dome. I remember telling the Gopher fans around us at the game that we were there to help them get Glen Mason fired and they were instantly our buddies. We had a great time at the game.
I feel sorry for Gopher football fans but this will continue on forever as long as they are the second most favorite football team in the cities. What do Columbus, OH, Ann Arbor, MI, Madison, WI, and Lincoln, Neb all have in common? None of these cities have professional football teams to compete with their local university football teams.
I was going to say teams that win??? but also Ohio has MANY storied programs within short driving distance and Pro teams in Pittsburgh, Philly, Cincy, Cleveland, Indy, Buffalo etc... There is no reason in Minnesota that the Gophers if they really put some money on the table and got a good coach couldn't be a top B10 program.....I mean if Iowa, Wisconsin and Nebraska can do it why can't MN?? I repeat I don't think Jerry Kill is the answer, Big Ten and the MAC are 2 extremely different leagues

So if they made say a Rich Rodriguez or Tubby Smith type hire that's all it would take?
That isn't always the answer. I think they lucked into Kill, but that hire is as good as the hires made by Miami or Michigan this past year. And better than recent hires made by MN, MICH, or even USC. There is never any guarantee, but at least Kill has a track record of winning. He is also 2-3 against the Big Ten, all road games. Most Big Ten coaches aren't that close to .500 on the road in conference.
No but a good coach will help bring in kids of a higher profile, Mason and Brewster just didn't have it, I think Mason had a little more positive Personality than that moron Brewster, and we have a nice little record against the B10, B12 and MAC, doesn't mean Bohl would make a good hire in the FBS

Agreed on most, but in reality if high-profile coaches aren't going to Michigan or USC or Miami, they sure as hell aren't going to Minnesota.
Besides, that isn't what it takes. Most coaches work their way up. So yes the competition gets tougher the higher you get, but the cream rises. Jim Tressel is a great example. Now OSU has major built-in advantages, but all would agree that he has done great.
I actually think Bohl could do alright in the FBS in the right situation, I just don't see him leaving the good thing he has here.
