Nope, it's in the DI manual*. They're called initial counters. An FBS school can only bring in 25 student-athletes that are counting against the 85 scholarship limit for the first time. FCS schools can bring in 30 initial counters against the 85 total limit(63 scholies over 85 players). NCAA regs allow greyshirts to be initial counters in either their first academic year or their first playing year, whichever the school prefers. But they must be an initial counter at some point.

Say a recruit enrolled at NDSU for the first time a month ago. If we did not bring in our maximum of 30 initial counters last fall, the recruit could be added to the 2009 initial counter class. If we did bring in 30 initial counters, then he would be added to the 2010 class and we'd have 29 spots left open. That all presupposes that he was receiving a scholarship for the current semester. If he was paying his own way until the fall, then he would have to be counted as part of the 2010 class.

Any school can sign as many kids as they want, but they can only give scholarships to certain numbers and types, and they can only bring a certain number to fall camps.

If the player leaves prior to the first day of class, the school can re-award that scholarship to a new player immediately, provided the recipient was previously on the team for at least one academic year and had never before been awarded athletic aid. If the recipient had not been on the team for a year(a freshman or a transfer), then he can not start receiving the award until the following term(spring semester).

If the departing player did not withdraw until after the first day of class, then the scholarship cannot be re-awarded until the following year. Although it might be possible to re-award the money for the spring term to players already getting partial scholarships during the fall term. FCS football is a little wacky in that it's both a head count and equivalency sport. Sometimes it's hard to figure out which rules apply, and they don't always tell you straight out with an FCS exception. For example, if NDSU was giving money to the maximum of 85 players, and one of them dropped out after the first day of the fall term but before the first day of the spring term, then NDSU could not give the scholarship to a walk-on or other non-scholarship player as that would be considered the 86th counter. But equivalent sports allow scholarships to be canceled within the academic year and not be counted against the following term. So if our departing player had a full scholarship, it might be possible for that award to be divided and given to two players, each previously on a half scholarship(for instance). The bylaws don't specifically say you can do that in FCS, but they don't say you can't. If you were really interested in the answer, I'd contact Colleen Heimstead, NDSU's director for compliance. I'm just an educated layman, she's the pro.

I've been kind of curious about the rumor Kermit heard about a kicker from Tennessee.

My mind got to working and I am wondering if there is a possibility of a Vol transfer.

The Vols started with this kicker:

    Switched to this one midseason:

    http://www.utsports.com/sports/m-foo...am_chad00.html

The Vols finished with this kicker:

    http://www.utsports.com/sports/m-foo...s_devin01.html

All of these guys were juniors last year, obviously they couldn't have been impressed with any of them since they moved around. So, I wonder if Bohl will bring in a HS kicker, let them redshirt while going with a Sr kicker for one year?

I was too dumb to ask any good questions, such as, is the kicker a high school kid or a kicker? I wonder if WMG had a hand in this..

Just got word of a new commitment...

Osceola (WI) WR Tevin Pittman (6-4, 193). I assume he committed on scholarship, but haven't gotten that portion of the commitment confirmed just yet. But he has committed to NDSU nonetheless.

Interesting signing, it'll be nice to see some stats from him but you gotta like 6-4 and 190 in a receier - imagine that size bowling over defenders.

Thanks for the input Marlin, always good stuff to hear from you!

He was a WFCA honorable-mention all-state selection. We have him down for 35 receptions for 891 yards and 11 TD's as a senior.

I wonder how many people Bohl will announce that we don't know about? Walkons? Verbals we don't know about? I'm excited
