Oh for sure tech schools are a good thing. We have NDSCS, which could add a campus or two out west.

But, no need for the tiny 4 year schools eating up a shit ton of taxpayer money

I agree and think the same about SD.
It made sense when a 100 mile drive was a serious venture, but as mobile as society now is it is an insane waste of tax dollars to keep so many of these open.
Granted, shuttering these institutions will be the first nail in some of these cities' coffins, but that should not be part of this consideration.

Its in the state constitution so its a moot point. I just want to see us keep growing and the president seems to have a good vision

As a Fargo guy, I want to see NDSCS expand their Fargo campus. They could double their enrollment. Its a lot easier to recruit a high school kid at the new Career Academy and not send then an hour away, only to send them back in 2 years

I’m told NDSU is up ~21 students over this time last year, so will likely be up slightly at census (which is good considering the "free college" being offered next door in Moorhead)

Last year, the GF school's advantage over NDSU was entirely due to on-line (virtual) enrollment, and although I have not yet seen this year’s numbers, I expect it will be the same. This is what they are referring to as "record enrollment"

It appears Bismarck is reevaluating the funding model, as some in the Legislature are not keen on giving the same amount of money for students who may never set foot in the state. I hope they do this, as it strikes me as both fair and logical …

I think we need to get as many online students as possible, especially out of state. Even if they never set foot in North Dakota, it's money being transported to our city and state.

Look what it's done for Liberty. They have a record 115,000 online students in addition to their 15,800 on campus. It's a big reason they have unlimited money.

I think we need to do both

It's straight up more revenue for the school which leads to more donors

I have a question about the "free college" in at MSUM. My understanding is that if a Moorhead High school graduate gets at least 3.0, they get tuition paid for all 4 years.

Where does this money come from - the State of Minnesota or what? Obviously, it would be nice if NDSU could do this - I am sure if they could, they would.

Moorhead Area Public Schools and Minnesota State University Moorhead announced October 21 that they will be launching the Moorhead Scholars program ahead of the 2025-26 school year. This new program will aim to keep high-performing students in the community by offering full-tuition MSU Moorhead scholarships to Moorhead High School graduates who have earned top grades.

“This program aligns perfectly with our goal to help students thrive in a changing world,” said Superintendent Brandon Lunak. “We believe in supporting academic achievement and opening doors to higher education right here in Moorhead.”

Starting with the Class of 2025, Spuds who graduate from MHS with a GPA of 3.0 or higher can receive a four-year commitment of free college tuition at MSU Moorhead. This is accomplished through a combination of federal, state and institutional grants and scholarships for MSUM.

“We are proud to partner with Moorhead Area Public Schools in offering this opportunity for Moorhead’s brightest students,” said Dr. Tim Downs, MSU Moorhead President. “By investing in the next generation of scholars, we are investing in the future of our community.”

To become a Moorhead Scholar, students must meet the following criteria:

Graduate from Moorhead High School

Achieve a minimum high school grade point average of 3.0

Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Enroll as a full-time student at MSU Moorhead in the fall following their high school graduation

Moorhead Scholars is a last-dollar program designed to recognize and reward academic excellence by covering any remaining tuition costs at MSUM after all available gift aid has been applied. This innovative partnership highlights a shared commitment to nurturing local talent and fostering educational success within the Moorhead community.

“The Moorhead Scholars program will do more than support students – it is building a stronger Moorhead,” said Mayor Shelly Carlson. “The future of our community depends on empowering the next generation, and this program does exactly that.”

Important note: MAPS does not provide any funding for the Moorhead Scholars program. Funding for this program is exclusively provided by MSUM.

NDSU guarantees a $1,000 scholarships for students with a 3.0-3.64 GPA

They can apply for additional scholarship but If they receive a renewable scholarship exceeding the guaranteed minimum amount, the higher award will replace the lower one (not be added to it).

The North Dakota state legislature created a bunch of red tape to award scholarships to students getting scholarship for a 3.0 GPA. If a kid hasn't decided what he wants to do by his junior year, good luck

Earn a high school diploma
Complete Essential Skills Requirements
Complete a nine-week career education course or individual counseling
