Regarding Hawaii and the Mountain West.

I'm being told by a source close to the situation that talks have gained serious momentum and things could be finalized as soon as this weekend.

The real issue right now is that I feel the pressure to not add anymore FCS schools is real, obviously if a conference needs to go that route they do but it is looking like a last resort type of thing. The MWC is literally exhausting all of their FBS options. They are now down to getting Hawaii to join for all-sports, which is a very expensive endeavor for both Hawaii and the rest of the MWC.

Hawaii was a full member of the WAC and it worked. Yes, it is expensive, Hawaii budgets for it, making Hawaii a full member actually makes sense for the MWC. Get to 8 FBS schools, deal with the fallout of the PAC and evaluate the future. Adding a dreg like Tarleton State is what makes zero sense.

Its possible thats true on MW side. It's pretty well known they are one of top 3-4 CUSA backfill choices.

If we get another chain of PAC poaches AAC/SBC poaches CUSA, then Tarleton is back on deck again, with a few others nearby.

We want MW to either expand and/or take NIU/Toledo next to open the MAC door.

Money.

None of the G5 are profitable, they live off of subsidies, CFP money, and NCAA tourney money.

If P4 truly packs their bags, and leaves with all the CFP and majority of NCAA basketball money, the G5 are screwed financially. And yes, I believe if P4 leave they will circle back for the NCAA tournament also. The P4 have more than enough teams and media deals to make march madness an exclusively P4 thing. Everyone else effectively becomes D2 if they do that.

Never said that. The rumored *threat* of a rug pull by P4 is what might be causing conferences to look at FCS additions in general as an absolute last option. I don't know the veracity of this, but there sure have been a lot of rumors on that, including with Dom/McFeely on hot mic. Its a possibility.

Reality is SEC/B1G are the two ton gorillas and often get their way, even if its against the self interests of other members.

I believe the original plan was to add UTEP, Texas State and Tarleton as full members. With Hawaii as football only that would have made 10 for football..Then the NIU and Toledo football only would have the conference with 12 for football. They could have had 2 divisions for football. When Texas State stepped away from the negotiation, the Texas plan ended. UTEP is in Texas but also in the MST zone

All the time Hawaii was in all the versions of the WAC they did not pay subsidies and had essentially the same travel destinations they had before. In addition, every school remaining in the MWC has a whole lot more money and higher budgets than they did in 2012.

I do think Hawaii will come on board again. I also think the NIU/Toledo football addition is still very much alive. That would make 10 football schools and 8 oly sports schools. I believe the MW will then add an oly sports school to get to 9.



However, until the ink is dry, and everybody is cool with the deal, it is all up in the air.

How do you work football scheduling with only 8 teams? Does that mean 7 conference and 5 OOC games?
