Also, found his follow up retweet of this one kind of bizarre:

That suggests to me it isn’t done yet perhaps.

And I know a lot of people would love that scenario, but there is about a 1 in a bazillion chance the PAC go that direction. They will likely look outside both MWC and FCS for additional schools. I’m thinking most likely two top AAC schools will join them initially to get to 8. That would keep PAC alive and give it a strong base to build on later if they choose.
fwiw it is mentioned here also,
so increase those chances to two in a bazillion!

……Who are the candidates? That’s to be determined, sources told Action Network.

The Pac-12 could pursue two more Mountain West schools — UNLV and Air Force would be at the top of that list, sources said. Or the Pac-12 could hope (and pray) that somehow Cal and Stanford decided to leave the ACC and return to their Pac-12 roots.

Or maybe the Pac-12 could look to grab two schools from the AAC — maybe Memphis and/or Tulane — or from another Group of Six league. Or does it take a chance on an FCS school, such as FCS juggernauts North Dakota State or South Dakota State?…….

is it safe to assume that it doesn't happen now that it'll probably never happen? at least not in the next decade+?

    because it feels that way.

Seriously; if you read an article about PAC taking NDSU, not worth the paper written on. The opportunity now is Mountain West or another conference if they raid someone.

Stop trying to act like the NCAA. There is a direct connection between the collection and the athletic dept. Jay knows that and treats it accordingly.

Yeah MWC is the opportunity here. And they'll need to take FCS programs to avoid folding entirely I'd assume. Where's the crossover from g5 otherwise? the texas teams in the American or CUSA (i can never remember their exact footprints).

From everything I'm reading, options for Mountain West are CUSA teams in Texas or going after FCS. They will not get AAC or Sun Belt teams; but possible those teams would consider PAC. However, CUSA teams are generally worse football quality than top level FCS, so keeping my fingers crossed. I really think we have a shot here, provided SDSU get their head out of their ass as we need a travel partner for non-rev.

Now is certainly the best opportunity we've had in years.
"Now" though could mean another 3-6 months for MWC to formalize and approve their invites.

Also, there is a strong chance FBS will split/reorganize into P4 vs G6 (presuming PAC not allowed back in as a "power" conference) There could be further fallout and reorg that comes out of that. It is likely some additional FCS schools will join the G5/6 within a few years.

    Agree.

PAC will pull from some combination of MWC/AAC/SBC. Most likely MWC and AAC for first phase.
MWC will likely not be able to pull from AAC or SBC, though Texas St might be tempted.

FCS options are better geographically and competitively for MWC than most of the CUSA schools. I believe MWC will not want to reach to the east coast.

I think NDSU's main competition for those MWC backfill spots will come from the Big Sky. The Montana schools are obvious replacement candidates but there are others in the Big Sky who could make a push and fit better into the footprint of the schools that the MWC just lost such as Idaho, Sacramento St, and UC Davis.

Sam Herder...couple paragraphs worth a look:

"If MWC presidents do look at FCS additions, they may prefer FCS teams within their footprint with bigger markets, large alumni bases, student enrollment, and revenue potential. If that’s the case, Sac State and UC Davis could be targets. Northern Arizona may also be on the long list of options as well due to the factors above."

"Or if the MWC presidents are smart and just want to add the best pure football teams with cool home fields and passionate fan bases, they could look at NDSU, SDSU, Montana, and Montana State. Small TV markets, location, and budgets could be hurdles for these four programs in making an FBS jump. But if the invite is extended, I bet all four would say yes. The $5 million fee to go from FCS to the FBS won’t be a roadblock for those four. Montana and Montana State have to make the jump together. The board of regents will ensure the two are always in the same conference. NDSU doesn’t necessarily need SDSU to make the jump and vice versa."
