A very interesting look at the revenue and expense profiles of D1 schools:
    https://www.knightcommission.org/wp-...ncesGraphs.pdf

P5 are largely in FBS Q1/Q2.
G5, along with some lower rung P5 are in Q3/Q4.

Tons of fascinating conclusions from this, among them:

    - FCS only gets 5% of revenues from the category of "NCAA/Conference Distributions, Media Rights, and Post-Season Football". In the case of a school like NDSU it would be even lower once you remove our independent Media deal from that. Think we're talking about maybe $1m annually or less from NCAA?

    - P5 already get the lions share of "NCAA/Conference Distributions, Media Rights, and Post-Season Football" in NCAA.

    - Budgets at G5 FBS and FCS are largely supported by Government/School and Tuition/Student Fee support. This is why I have felt it doesn't make sense to pay athletes at that level. You are asking taxpayers and other students to spend more to pay the athletes. Their scholarships/free education are already being subsidized. There is no profit.

    - Even the P5 aren't sending large profits back to the schools, it is going to Athletic Department coaches and staff. If the student athletes are paid more, it will mean cuts to Coaching and Staff in P5. This is why they are pushing back and want to saddle G5/FCS with more of these costs.

There is a real risk here that the NCAA/P5 shifts the Alston settlement costs onto G5/FCS and then P5 splits with their money. That would likely bankrupt NCAA, and be devastating to G5/FCS schools, whose athletics are already heavily subsidized by taxes and students.

If I’m not mistaken the P5 just voted unanimously to save the NCAAs ass, so that should erase any doubt

I also can’t see the G5 leaving. They will take what they get like they always have, because it’s better than nothing and they will still be 'at the table'. NDSU will continue to try to join the club, which I suspect at some point will become much harder to do

Lots of moving parts yet with pay-for-play etc so realignment isn’t done, but I think you will see boundaries form based on FB support, as opposed to hoops or hockey

Hoops/March Madness is currently the largest revenue stream under the jurisdiction of NCAA.

The CFP is a contract directly among the FBS conferences and media companies. It is outside the NCAA.

A "fourth quartile median" is effectively 87th of 100.

NDSU or UND would have to double FB spending to be fourth quartile median of FBS. That's just Athletics and not G&G or 1883 NIL dollars. The numbers are staggering.

Based on this announcement, it looks like the deal is basically done with P5 and NCAA:

Right, and the NCAA is clearly doing everything it can to stay attached to the CFP

The 2nd level will whine but go along because what else can you do really? But there will be a reset and realignment within the 2nd level based on FB priority. You already see this within the MVFC and the recent movement of coaches and players. Not a good sign when that kind of disparity exists within a confrence

Thing is, the NCAA isn’t “attached” at all to the CFP, only the existing FBS conferences are. Believe they throw a few chicken bones ( $1m or so?) to all of FCS combined but aren’t really required to do so. Governance of CFP is all managed outside the NCAA.

Bigger picture, the real divide is P2 (SEC/B1G) vs everyone else. They might bring the B12 and ACC along when they split off, or might consolidate those conferences/schools like they did with the PAC.

In that context, not sure if you mean G5 or FCS when you say 2nd level? They are likely headed to the same fate. Also curious what you think will become of MVFC. Not sure there is a better option for most of the members.
