CRETE, Neb.-- Luke Shekeryk (SR/Seattle, WA) went 3-for-4 with two home runs and drove in seven to help the University of Jamestown baseball team to a 13-6 win over Doane (Neb.) University in the championship game of the Doane pod in the GPAC postseason tournament.
Jamestown (29-22) travels to face Concordia (Neb.) Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Seward, Neb., for the GPAC's second automatic bid to the NAIA national tournament. The Bulldogs won three elimination games Monday to capture the Seward pod of the tournament.
Shekeyrk led off the second inning with a solo home run to bring the Jimmies within 3-1 after the Tigers scored three times in their first at-bat. UJ scored three runs in each of the third, fifth, sixth, and seven innings, finishing with 14 hits in the game.
Tayler Cullen (SR/Santa Rosa, Calif.)'s bases-loaded double in the third made it 4-3 Jamestown, but Doane came back with a single run in the bottom half to tie the game at 4-4.
Trent Peters (SO/Niverville, MB, Canada) and Andrew Kupec (SO/Peoria, AZ) had RBI singles in the fifth and Shekeryk scored on a throwing error as the Jimmies took the lead for good at 7-4. The Tigers scored once in the fifth and had their last run come in the eighth.
After Quade Peters (FR/West Fargo, ND) and Tanner Shepard (SR/Grand Rapids, MN) reached base in the sixth, Shekeryk came through with a two-out, three-run homer that extended UJ's lead to 10-5.
Shekeryk continued his monster day at the plate in the seventh, clearing the bases with a double to right center to score Xander Orejudos (JR/Ellensburg, WA), Shepard, and Quade Peters.
Orejudos, Cullen, Quade Peters, and Reece McKenzie (FR/Gresham, OR) all had a pair of hits for Jamestown.
Kendall Yackley (JR/Lynnwood, WA) started on the mound and went three innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on 10 hits. Ben Ray (JR/Federal Way, WA) (3-0), the second of five Jimmie relievers, got the win after pitching 1 2/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Overall, the UJ relief corps of Cameron Jenkins (SR/West Richland, WA), Ray, Noah Soltero (SR/North Las Vegas, NV), Cameron Multer (SO/Greeley, CO), and Hayden Brown (JR/Buckeye, AZ) worked six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits, walking two and striking out nine.
This will be the second time in the last three full seasons UJ and Concordia have met for the GPAC championship. Jamestown defeated the Bulldogs 3-0 on May 7, 2019 in Yankton, S.D., behind a four-hit shutout by Dru Fitz.
