(Thomas, Lennon, Schweigert were football coaches at UND).
But Thomas and his staff, which by then included eventual coaching successors Dale Lennon and Bubba Schweigert, along with then-assistant coach Rob Bollinger, designed a plan to recruit and develop players to counter the Bison's vaunted, run-oriented veer offense, as well as to develop a passing attack of their own. "We worked hard at recruiting," Thomas said.
A reason why the UND game should be just another game. In the early 1990s UND started recruiting and developing players so it could beat the Bison. In other words, to be best in ND. As some of us have argued ... wrong perspective for NDSU. The goal of NDSU is to be strong at a national level, to be able to compete against a variety of offensive & defensive schemes. If NDSU starts making it a priority to defeat UND, rather than a priority to be strong nationally, it will harm NDSU's competitiveness. Part of the reason I don't like this so-called rivalry. I think the numbers speak for themselves - NDSU 12, UND 1.
If you want to be strong nationally, you gotta be strong at home first. Feel free to inform us of any titles NDSU won in a year where they lost to UND.

Obviously the game was big, but they knew if they couldn't beat the Bison, they weren't going anywhere on the big stage as well. Kind of like SDSU now. They want to beat the Bison not only for the rivalry, but they know they will get them in the first round of playoffs every year, so they have to be able to beat them to be nationally relevant.
