Thomas Buning, an associate athletic director at Army, will become athletic director at the University of North Dakota.

North Dakota President Charles Kupchella made the announcement Monday, citing Buning's "rich array of leadership, management, budget and resource acquisition experiences."

Buning, 45, an Army lieutenant colonel, succeeds Roger Thomas, who resigned in February to become the commissioner of the North Central Conference. Phil Harmeson has been serving as interim athletic director.

Kupchella said Buning will start his new job July 1.

In a statement, Buning called Monday's announcement "an absolutely exciting day for the Buning family" and said he and his family are looking forward to visiting Fargo during spring commencement weekend.

Buning is in his fourth year as an associate athletic director at the military academy in West Point. A former pentathlete who twice qualified for the U.S. Olympic trials, he is an Orlando native and a 1981 West Point graduate.

Aparantly he wants to check out the state's only DI school to see how he should plan UND's move!
