I found this on the NCAA website:

Exception -- Professional Basketball Draft. A student-athlete in the sport of basketball may enter a professional league's draft one time during his or her collegiate career without jeopardizing eligibility in that sport, provided the student-athlete is not drafted by any team in that league and the student-athlete declares his or her intention to resume intercollegiate participation within 30 days after the draft. The student-athlete's declaration of intent must be in writing to the institution's director of athletics.

Wow, learn something new every day! Thanks.

So with J, he'd be good if he went in the first round or didn't get drafted at all. The bad case would be in the middle--going in the second round....

I doubt that a 7 footer with proven ability would go undrafted so that theory is probably out the window. Here's the other problem, that player could sign an NBA free agent contract ANYTIME. So let's say he's playing well to start the year, an NBA team could sign him over Christmas break and he could play the next day. That would kind of leave the college teammates in a pickle eh? What if he jumped after the conference tournament and before the NCAA tourney? That's why there is some concern about this.

He'll get drafted. However, if he believes it will be late in the first round, say all the Florida kids and Ohio State kids come out, they'll all push a kid like Smith lower in the first round. He may then decide to play college ball for one more year. They'll be fewer big men in the draft and his stock may rise. Not hiring an agent gives him that option. good move in my opinion.

This year's draft will have a lot of talent.

The senior class is regarded very highly (one of the best in years) plus an inordinate amount of underclassman are poised to come out after having to deal with the recently enacted NBA rule of ... one year beyond high school.

So the Greg Oden's of the world who under the old rule was eligible for the draft last year have finally acheived their draft eligibility.

Regardless of whether Durant and/or Oden come out (I predict both will) the Florida foursome and a high number of other early entrants will likely push Jason Smith to the near bottom of the first round if not into the second.

Lastly the only good thing is that the number of quality foreign players is down slightly (from a draft perspective).

Finally ... one last point ... this maneuver, for guys like Smith, allows them to partake in a lot of the pre-draft evaluations such as the Portsmouth tryouts/tournament. That is an invaluable way for improve their game even though the likelihood is high that they'll return to college.

Randolph Morris , a PF from Kentucky was the player mentioned above who went undrafted, returned to school and played this year and when they we're knocked out of the tournament, he signed with the Knicks and is playing now.

Thanks for the info. I should have been able to remember that. Especially the Kentucky connection.

Miles is meeting with Jason's parents tonight. He will go through the camps, and have several evaluation services evaluate where he will go in the draft. Like was said before, if he goes in the first round, he gets guaranteed money. 2nd round...not so much. Basically, if you are rooting for Miles and CSU, you want everyone to turn pro. This is a huge draft and he is borderline 1st round right now. www.nbadraft.net is a really good draft link that is updated quite often. Right now it has him at #29.
