    Default Needs for next season

A few things I’d like to see happen for next season (and a wish/prediction for each).

    - a veteran at 197. It’s very hard for anyone to wrestle as a True Freshman but especillay at the heavier weights. Glover burned a year that he absolutely could have used to get bigger and stronger. Redshirt him next year. Maybe a kid like Gabe Nagel from Minnesota (little falls, mn native) would like to spend one year as a regular. Wasley came and can give him the scoop on NDSU

    - same at 133. Burwick is done and there isn’t a replacement for him unless someone moves a weight or they burn a TF year from someone in the incoming class. Maybe Peyton Moore could convince his brother Kade to come north like he did. I know he’s been the starter at Missouri for a couple years and a NQ er but I believe the tigers have a blue chipper coming in next year at the weight.

    - otherwise barring anyone leaving or getting injured the lineup looks pretty set for next season.
Bison fans are blessed. Enjoy it.

Unless something has changed, we should have Adam Cherne at 197 next year. Wrestled as a true freshman, redshirted this year. He was better than Brenot when they were both at 184 in 2024, so as long as he can be a true 197 we should be good there. Agree at 133.

He was better because he beat Brenot the first month of their first year of college wrestling????? If you look at his matches the two years he’s been here it not very pretty. 6-13 against d1 competition and when he loses it’s bad. Majority are major or technical decision losses. And unless he’s put on a lot of muscle he’s pretty skinny for 197. Everyone gets caught up in the victory he had against Giseppie Hoose in the Oklahoma match which really wasn’t that great of a win.

I’m making the assumption the coaches would have made the better wrestler the starter, which was Cherne last year. At any rate, I think Cherne deserves an opportunity. Another weight we could use an upgrade is 165. I don’t know if Greenley is athletic enough for this level. Has such a hard time generating any offense.

I'm not sold at 141 either but i agree 133 and 197 are in clear need of a experienced addition. I think 197 is Chernes to lose, but after his 197 performances this year I would be surprised if they dont bring in an upgrade.

Cherne wrestled nine matches this season. The first three at 197, the last six at 184. Wrestlestat lists him @ 184 pounds and doesn’t have him listed as redshirting.

Greenley is an interesting one. He beat out Landen Johnson at 157 and caused Johnson to transfer. Johnson ended up being a NQ this year at Northern Illinois. Then he moves up to 165 and beats out Howe who had a full season as a starter. This season they wrestled the crap out of the kid with 40 total matches which to me is insane. Looks like they wanted him to get him as much exposure as possible to competition and stronger guys. Other than the two matches against All Americans Steed and Amine at the Big 12’s he was pretty competitive in his losses. As a North Dakota kid I think he deserves and will get every chance to be the guy next year.

197 and 133 seem like pretty obvious needs. PaBizon hit on all the points on Cherne. Hopefully he improves, but he hasn't shown near enough to be considered a capable starter at this point.

I would imagine Peyton Moore is the in-house favorite for 133, but again, he hasn't performed to a starter's level yet.

As far as feasible(ish) transfers, there could be a couple local 197s that would be improvements.

Brock Fettig out of Bismarck/SDSU improved significantly this year and will have to compete with Thomas Dineen of Benson for the spot. Fettig is more of a 184 than a 197, but he had decent results at 197. Beat Cherne by major, beat the 3rd and 4th place D2 guys, and his biggest win was over Isaac dean of Rider, who was a #7 seed at NCAAs. Dineen started over Fettig when they gave Glazier time off, so I would assume he's the heavy favorite to start. I'd take either guy but Fettig is probably the more likely guy to leave.

Gavin Nelson or Gabe Nagel out of Minnesota would be an upgrade too. If MN brings in a transfer to start, I imagine both would hit the portal and Nelson would be my preference of the two.

Any of: Alan Koehler (Prior Lake/Nebraska), Kysen Terukina (Iowa State) orseveral of Terukina's backup teammates around this weight, or Kale Peterson (Iowa) would be serviceable with varying degrees of upside.

If Koy Hopke is healthy and starting, I would guess Bennett Tabor transfers for his final year and I'd take him at HWT.

125, 149, 157, 174 (Magayna), and 184 are the five that seem set (assuming no departures). 141 (Olson), 165 (Greenley), and HWT (Blackburn-Forst) all showed promise at times but if the right transfer was available, we could upgrade. 133 and 197 need upgrades.

I wonder if guys like Wasley, Howes, and Schumm transfer for a better chance to start.

Does anyone know what the injury/reason was that Peterson didn’t compete at Big 12’s? He could also be a concern if it was something major.

Alex Facundo’s in the transfer portal. A guy can dream, right?
