Default 2024 Game 9 Preview: Murray State

Coach Polasek presser ongoing now - he just said both Sam Jung (torn pec) and Cole Payton (torn labrum) are done for the year. Sounds like Benson could still come back.

This game is the definition of a let-down game - after having a huge home crowd in a massive game against their biggest rival they're going to go on the road against a relatively unknown opponent. Murray St is drawing 10k+ in their first 3 home games so they'll likely have a decent crowd at least. They hung with Illinois St last week and it was a one possession game late in the 4th quarter. Their starting QB Jayden Johanneson signed with NDSU in the 2019 class and redshirted that fall before transferring.

The tale of the tape shows a pretty lopsided matchup:

Hopefully the Bison can work on some things like getting some explosive run plays especially with the RBs now that the QB run game is going to be a much smaller part of the offense (maybe more under-center formations with a FB now???), continue trending the defense in the right direction, play a clean game, and get out of there without any additional injuries.

Losing Cole sucks so bad. I suppose he's too far into the season for a medical redshirt?

Yeah, Ross Uglem asked him that in the press conference and Polasek confirmed. I don't know if it's 4 games as the hard limit to maintain a redshirt due to injury or 30% of games but even if they play 16 games this season he'd be over either threshold.

    Keys to the game:

    1. Do everything you can to make Cam need to do as little as possible to win. Pound Marty at them.
    2. Build lead, and get Cam out.

Pretty simple blueprint. Cole being out is a big deal with Cam still not 100%. We need Hayes to get some reps.

Feel horrible for Cole, but next man up in that #2 QB spot. We've obviously seen Hayes in a very small sample size earlier in the year...but, word from Coaches/the team is that he is an uber-talented kid. If this game plays out as it should, there is zero reason as to why he shouldn't get the entire 2nd half.

Has anyone heard anything about Cole W?

Originally, they had said they planned on waiting 8-10 weeks and reevaluating if he could come back. 8 weeks is today. With Jung out for the year, it would be nice to replace him with Cole W, but I realize that is likely a long shot.

Spot on. Don’t care if we win by 7 or 57. Just minimize injuries and help guys heal up. Give some reps to backups if possible. There are young guys that will be eager for reps and it gives them some experience.

Chuck 40 yd bombs on every 1st down. Get up by 40 at half. Stretch the field early. Work on the long ball vs the weak d.
