ESPN says private equity firms are coming to an athletic department near you.

I say if there is one thing those guys know how to do it is cut costs.

We all live in stories... It seems to me that a definition of any living vibrant society is that you constantly question those stories... The argument itself is freedom. It's not that you come to a conclusion about it. Through that argument you change your mind sometimes... That's how societies grow. When you can't retell for yourself the stories of your life then you live in a prison... Somebody else controls the story. - S. Rushdie

This is absurd and probably a bigger lawsuit than the one they are settling

Why is their not more animosity?
IANAL, but this is what I think the NCAA's position on this is.
They're a defendant of suit claiming damages from the NCAA's policy of not allowing NIL payments. For various reasons the NCAA has decided to settle.
NIL is generally believed to affect the revenue sports of P5 football and MBB more than anything else. That's where the vast bulk of the damages originated.
NCAA directly makes very little money from P5 FB due to how the bowl/CFP post-season is set up.
NCAA makes a huge percentage of its revenue from March Madness. The damages for past behavior are going to be paid from funds they gave to conferences but should have given to elite athletes.
Their plan to pay damages is to reduce payments in proportion to what was paid out. It's generally believed non-power conferences are heavily subsidized by these tourney credits compared with their performance and media draw.

That means the little guys pushing back is playing with fire. If we insist we aren't that valuable, we might get our payments cut even more.

I *think* we don't get a say on if the NCAA settles the House lawsuit. I *think* we do have enough votes to veto the payment plan. That would create a very interesting scenario where the NCAA owes $2.7B but doesn't have a way to pay it.

The big boys need to pony up. To schlep this off on the schools that are more negatively impacted by this ruling is ridiculous.

We'll end up with the P2 varsity sports and intramurals at the rest of the colleges. (half purple)

It’s over. Greed has completely penetrated FBS and there’s no putting the genie back in the bottle at this point. The P5 schools have proven that if they think they can make an extra dollar, they’ll tear down college athletics for good to do it.

Ethics, morality, tradition, honor, respect, collegiality, etc. mean nothing anymore to them. College sports has turned into another financial services industry and once you do that you don’t go back.

The NCAA will be bankrupt after the smaller schools sue. That's fine. A new organization can then take over. If the P4 want to do their own thing, so be it. Just on principle alone

If they are willing to sell us out for fear of pissing of the P4, let's make sure it happens

I don't think we even need a lawsuit. If the small schools are united, we have the votes for internal changes. I'm worried what the repercussions of that would be. A Power breakaway has been rumored for years.

I've worked with PE firms, and they know how to squeeze the sponge dry and leave a pile of dust behind.
If PE firms takeover, college sports is done. They will leverage and pocket any profits the players don't get.

Another update. I'm not going to gather together all the links, but reputable sources say the NCAA, ACC, B1G, B12 have voted to accept the House settlement. SEC and PAC are meeting tomorrow and are expected to approve. Expect a flurry of news articles by Friday. This is a done deal.

That breakaway has been inevitable for a while, its just gaining momentum now.

The P2 are going to separate and take as much revenue as they can with them. Unless all the other schools are willing to subsidize the P2, which to a degree this NCAA settlement seems to do. I'm not sure which is worse. Inclined to say let them leave and take the liabilities they owe with them.

What the P2 would really love to do is stick the NCAA with the bill, then run off without paying a dime of it.
