Default Re: Season Opening Series: Bison vs UC Irvine

Game one of the Pacific series has the Bison playing very much like they did in the early part of the season in 2023, with the Herd leaving runners in scoring position early in the game, while allowing their opponents to advance runners and get early leads by stringing together walks, hits, and hit-batters. The Tigers used that formula to score the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning and grab a 1-0 lead after 2 complete. That all changed in the top of the third, where NDSU used a two out rally highlighted by a Sam Canton single that plated 2 and gave the Bison a 2-1 lead.
Nolan Johnson is the Friday starter for the Bison. That is significant, since number one starter Parker Puetz suffered what appeared to be an injury to his throwing arm in the season opener against UC Irvine and it may be more than just a tweak. Johnson looked sharp in his first career start, as he had 9 strikeouts in his 5 innings vs the Tigers.
The Bison load the bases off reliever Owen McWilliam with no one out in the top of the 6th and Cadyn Schwabe delivers sac fly to left to plate the 3rd run of the game for SU. Colton Beckers 2nd double of the game drove in 2 more for a 5-1 lead. Becker later scored on a botched pick-off attempt for a Bison 6-1 lead after 5 1/2 innings of play.
The 6th inning was not kind to relievers in this game, as both teams struggled to record outs as the runs piled up. The 1st 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th were charged to Karns, the 4th and 5th belonged to Ligtenberg, and it's all tied at 6 each after 6 innings. The Tigers only had 2 hits in plating those 5 runs, which should give you an idea of the ugliness of that frame. If your Bingo card had a wild pitch, a balk, and an error on the 1st baseman, you may have collected the jackpot...
A 2-out RBI double by Jake Tandy gives the Tigers a 7-6 lead after seven.
And just like that, the offense disappears like a fart in the wind and the Bison are 0-5 to begin the 24 season. Oh, and no sprinkles on the ice cream for the bullpen this evening, as they wasted a superb start by Nolan Johnson with their unimpressive performance tonight.

NDSU (0-5): 6 runs on 11 hits, with 2 errors and 10 LOB
Pacific (2-3): 7 runs on 6 hits, with 1 error and 6 LOB

    Batteries:
Bison - Nolan Johnson, Alex Karns (6), Reese Ligtenberg (6), Skyler Riedinger (7), and Will Busch
Mustangs - Ethan Shaver, Owen McWilliam (5), Ryan Martinez (7) and Jacob Weiss

    WP: Ryan Martinez (1-0)
    LP: Skyler Riedinger (0-1)

    Homeruns:
    Bison: None
    Mustangs: None

    NDSU: Colton Becker 3-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI, Sam Canton 2-4, 2RBI, Jake Schaffner 2-4, Cadyn Schwabe 1 RBI

Game 2 in Stockton vs Pacific has Logan Knight (0-1) on the bump for the Bison facing Josh Souza. The Bison score 2 in the 3rd to break a 2 all tie. A 3-spot in the 4th gives the Herd some breathing room and should produce a collective sigh of relief in the NDSU bullpen. The Bison add 2 in the top of the 6th on 4 extra base hits (3 doubles and a triple) and lead 9-2 after six innings. I was wrong! The bullpen remains shaky, and after 3 walks (that's 11 for the Game) and a throwing error, Pacific scores 2 runs on no hits in the bottom of the eighh, and we enter the ninth leading 9-4. The Tigers refuse to lay down and score 3 in the ninth and leave 2 on when the rally ends on a ground ball. Bison are in the win column with a 9-7 final.

NDSU (1-5): 9 runs on 12 hits, with 4 errors and 10 LOB
Pacific (2-4): 7 runs on 7 hits, with 1 error and 13 LOB

    Batteries:
Bison - Logan Knight, Leland Wilson (5), Seth Thompson (7), Joey Danielson (8) and Will Busch
Mustangs - Josh Souza, Reece Wagner (4), Bryce Cruz (4), David Andrus (7), Austin McKinney (9) and Andrew Sloan

    WP: Leland Wilson (1-0)
    LP: Bryce Cruz (0-1)

    Homeruns:
Bison: Carson Hake - Solo to left in the 2nd inning
    Mustangs: None

    NDSU: James Dunlap 2-3, 2B, 1 RBI, Jack Steil 3-3, 3B, 1 RBI, Carson Hake 1-1, HR, 1 RBI, Sam Canton 2B, 3 RBI, Davis Hamilton 2B, 2 RBI
Pacific: Kaden Peterson 2B, Andrew Sloan 2 2B 1 RBI, Andre Vidal 2B, 2 RBI, Jake Tandy 1 RBI, Jack Metcho 1 RBI, Gabe Camacho 1 RBI

Get away day for the Bison, as they face Pacific in game 3 of the series. Landon Koenig (0-1) gets his second career start for the Herd and will face Jakob Guardado (0-1) for the Tigers. Both pitchers throwing well and the game remained scoreless until the bottom of the 4th, when Pacific scored the first run of the game on a pair of singles and an error on Koenig. The lead didn't last long, as the Bison scored on an error on the catcher followed by back-to-back homeruns by Dunlap and Becker and finished with a 4 run fifth inning. Pacific answered with i in the bottom half of the 5th, and the Bison led 4-2 until the 6th, when Kaden Peterson hit the 1st home run of the season for the Tigers, a solo shot, and the lead became 1 run heading into the 7th. Hachem comes in to pitch the 7th and promptly puts 2 runners in scoring position with a pair of walks and a wild pitch, but Hunter Rosenbaum got out of the jam, allowing only 1 run on a ground out. We enter the 8th all tied up at 4 apiece. It could be the water in the bullpen, as Carter loads the bases with a hit batter and 2 walks and Jake Schaffner delivers a 2-run single to get the lead back for SU.
Austin Bergum came on to slam the door and the Bison have their first series win and their first winning streak of the season.

NDSU (2-5): 6 runs on 10 hits, with 3 errors and 7 LOB
Pacific (2-5): 4 runs on 8 hits, with 2 errors and 8 LOB

    Batteries:
Bison - Landon Koenig, Reese Ligtenberg (6), Julien Hachem (7) Hunter Rosenbaum (7), Austin Bergum (8) and Noah Gordon, Will Busch (8)
Mustangs - Jakob Guardado, Regan Carter (6) Jarryd Wood (8) and Jacob Weiss

    WP: Austin Bergum (1-0)
    LP: Regan Carter (0-2)

    Homeruns:
Bison: James Dunlap - 2 run to left in the 5th, Colton Becker - solo to left-center in the 5th
Mustangs: Kaden Peterson - solo to left in the 6th inning

NDSU: James Dunlap 2-5, HR, 2 RBI, Colton Becker HR, 1 RBI, Jake Schaffner 3-4, 2 RBI
Pacific: Jack Metcho 3 -3, Kaden Peterson 2-5, HR, 1 RBI, Jake Tandy 2-4, Andrew Sloan 1 RBI, Chase Graves 1 RBI

Default Re: Season Opening Series: Bison vs UC Irvine

Game time for the Bison (2-5) vs #6 Oregon State (7-1). Matt Sargeant on the hill for the Herd vs Ian Lawson for OSU.
Lawson was unable to find the strike zone and did not get out of the top of the 1st, as the Bison score 5 runs on 5 walks, 1 hit by pitch, and a single by James Dunlap. AJ Hutcheson came on to record 3 outs and the Bison head to the field with a 5-0 lead. Matt Sargeant faced his own struggles with control and almost mirrored the effort of Lawson, allowing the Beavers 4 runs on 4 walks, 1 hit by pitch, and 1 single and it's 5-4 Bison after 1 complete. Bison get 1 in the 2nd - Beavers answer with 5 and the Bison trail 9-6 after 2 innings. That score held until the bottom of the 4th, when OSU scored 3 to take a 12-6 lead going into the 5th innings. It's a good night for getting work for the bullpen, but it's not good work by the bullpen. Hayden Sylte surrenders 3 in the bottom of the 5th, and the Bison are facing their first mercy rule loss with the next Beaver run. The Bison staff pitch count stands at a ridiculous 166 in 5 innings. It's 15-6 OSU after 5. Bison get one in the 6th and now have scored more runs against the Beavers than any other opponent this year. Colbey Klepper is not making friends with the Beavers, as he plunks his third batter in the inning with 2 out in the bottom half of the inning. All three score along with 1 more for good measure and it's the Beavers leading 19-7 heading into the 7th. Final pitch count for NDSU was 191. Yuck!!

NDSU (2-6): 7 runs on 9 hits, with 1 error and 8 LOB
Oregon State (8-1) 19 runs 11 hits, with no errors and 11 LOB

    Batteries:
Bison - Matt Sargeant, Reese Ligtenberg (2), Leland Wilson (3) Hayden Sylte (5) Colbey Klepper (6), Hunter Rosenbaum (6) and Will Busch
Beavers - Ian Lawson, AJ Hutcheson (1) Noah Ferguson (4) Tyler Mejia (6) and Micah McDowell

    WP: AJ Hutchison (1-1)
    LP: Reese Ligtenberg (0-1)

Game 2 vs Oregon State. Bison redshirt sophomore Nolan Johnson (0-0) will be facing off against OSU senior Jaren Hunter (0-0).

For the second night in a row, the Bison start out with an offensive mindset, using a 2 run double by Sam Canton to take an early 2-0 lead. Johnson faced 4 batters in the bottom half of the inning, allowing only a harmless single and the Bison lead after one. A power failure caused a 17 minute delay, but it was all quiet until the top of the 5th when James Dunlap followed a Cadyn Schwabe lead-off single with a towering home run to left and it's a 4 run Bison lead. Colton Becker followed with a triple and scored on a Jack Steil single and the Herd leads 5 - 0. There must be a policy in the PAC that if the ranked home team is trailing halfway through the game, the "crew in blue" needs to come to their assistance, because a pitcher who has only walked 2 batters in his first 11 innings of work this season walks 3 straight, to walk in the only run for the Beavers. The announcers say many of the pitches were "close", but the Bison didn't agree, leading to the ejection of 1 staff member and starting catcher Will Busch. Bison lead 5-1 after 5. Riedinger comes in to pitch the 6th and brings his A game to compliment a fantastic star by Nolan Johnson, who allowed 1 run, 2 hits, walked 4 and struck out 5. Still 5-1 through 6 innings. Bison load the bases in the top of the seventh and back-up catcher Noah Gordon goes down looking. Looks like the bullpen needs to carry the load tonight.
An injury to the home plate umpire causes a 23 minute delay in the bottom of the 7th and on the 1st pitch by Riedinger, Travis Bazzana gets the 3rd hit of the day for OSU and jacks a 3-run shot to right. The lead is cut to one. Danielson on to pitch, and he issues a bases loaded walk and the game is tied at 5 all. The Beavers get the lead on an error (the second of the inning by the Bison) by the shortstop Jake Schaffner that could have ended the inning and it's business as usual for the Bison, who have blown a 5-run lead on 2 consecutive nights!! Beavers up 6-5 going into the 8th inning. Bison enter top of the 9th down by one run and having the 3-4-5 hitters coming to the plate. And they go down 1-2-3 and OSU comes out on top 6-5. The Bison out hit the Beavers 10-4, yet lose. Double yuck...

NDSU (2-7): 5 runs on 10 hits, with 2 errors and 9 LOB
Oregon State (9-1): 6 runs 4 hits, with no errors and 9 LOB

    Batteries:
Bison - Nolan Johnson, Skyler Riedinger (6), Joey Danielson (7) and Will Busch
Beavers - Jaren Hunter, Nelson Keljo (5) Bridger Holmes (7) and Tanner Smith

    WP: Bridger Holmes (2-0)
    LP: Joey Danielson (0-2)

    Homeruns:
Bison: James Dunlap - 2 run to left in the 5th
Beavers: Travis Bazzana - 3 run to right in the 7th

NDSU: James Dunlap, HR, 2 RBI, Colton Becker 3B, 1 RBI, Jake Schaffner 2-4, 2B, Sam Canton 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, Cadyn Schwabe 2-4, Jack Steil 1 RBI
OSU: Travis Bazzana HR, 3 RBI, Tanner Smith 2B, Canon Reeder 1 RBI, Gavin Turley 1 RBI

All set for game three of the series with OSU (if the rain stops). The Pregame show is 2 hours late, but it looks like they will be attempting to play around the weather, with a start set for 4:35 CST.
The starting pitcher for the Beavers will be Junior right-hander Jacob Kmatz. He will be facing Bison Junior right-hander Logan Knight.
For the first time in this series, we have a scoreless 1st inning for both teams. Both teams hung zeroes on the board until the bottom of the 4th, when a walk to Mason Guerra was followed by a home run by Dallas Macias and the Beavers jump out to a 2-0 lead. Oregon State adds 3 more in the bottom of the 5th to go up 5-0 on the Herd. That stood up until the bottom of the 8th, when OSU scored 5 runs, including the game-winner on (of all things) a walk-off error. The #6 Beavers move to 10-1 on the season with a mercy rule 10-0 decision over NDSU. It's never a good day when the number of hits you have equals the number of errors you commit. Oh well, one more chance to catch lightning tomorrow.

Default Re: Season Opening Series: Bison vs UC Irvine

Final game of the OSU series has freshman Landon Koenig (0-1) on the hill for the Herd (2-8) matching up with fellow freshman Eric Segura (1-0) for OSU (10-1).

The Bison were gifted with 2 Beaver errors but failed to score in the top of the 1st and the Beavers used a walk, 2 singles, a balk, another walk, and a bases loaded triple to move out to a 4-0 lead after 1 inning. The Bison get on the board in the second with back-to-back hit batsmen, followed by a Garret Hill single, 4-1 OSU. The Beavers add 2 in the 3rd including a solo homerun by Mason Guerra, and 2 in the 4th on a 2 run double by Elijah Hainline. The Bison answer with 2 in the 5th on an RBI triple by Cadyn Schwabe and a sacrifice fly by Jake Schaffner. 8-3 OSU after 5 innings.
The Bison get runners on 1st and 2nd with no one out and a bunt single by Schaffner loads them up and a run scores on a double lay ground out and the rally ends with a strikeout. Bison down 8-4 heading into the home half of the 7th. A trio of wild pitches with runners on base led to a pair of Beaver runs to give OSU a 10-4 lead. And then the rains came and a delay is in place. Play resumes and the Beavers strand 3 runners. The Bison score on an RBI single by Carson Hake and proceed to load the bases with no one out and score again on a ground out, 10-6 OSU. Another RBI groundout makes it 10-7 and that's how the rally ends.
It now is up to the relievers and the defense to get us to the ninth and a chance to make a miracle. Roman Trapini, the Freshman from Minnesota, makes his mound debut for the Bison. Short stint on the mound, as the Beavers get 2 off of Roman and 1 off of Skyler Riedinger to lead 13 - 7 after 8 innings. The Bison are 3 outs away from being the victims of a 4-game sweep by the #6 Beavers. It's a quiet 9th and a 13-7 loss is in the books. On to Louisiana, and some Cajun/Creole food along with a shot at SELA and the defending National Champion Tigers at Baton Rouge.

NDSU (2-9): 7 runs on 8 hits, with 2 errors and 7 LOB

    WP: Eric Segura (2-0)
    LP: Landon Koenig (0-2)

    Homeruns:

Beavers: Mason Guerra solo to left in the 3rd inning, Tanner Smith 2 Run to center in the 8th inning

NDSU: Garret Hill 2-3, 2 RBI, Cadyn Schwabe 2-5, 3B, 2 RBI, James Dunlap 2B, Jake Schaffner 1 RBI, Carson Hake 1 RBI
