Considering the 1st one was in a *season that doesn't count in anyone's mind but SHSU, no.

…which begs the question: how big of a drought is needed for NDSU to have considered ending one dynasty and starting another?
If we are calling a dynasty just based on making it to the chipper, is it a dynasty if a team makes the playoffs by the skin of their teeth and then wins out the playoffs and loses in the chipper? And does this 3 years in a row, is that a dynasty? Even if you never won the national championship and end the year with a record of 10-6 for three years straight.

I’d like to propose the following criteria for how a dynasty is started and ended using 2 guiding principles:
-Championship wins only count (not championship game appearances)
-at least 3 in at least half the opportunities (or years)

By this rationale, the smallest dynasty any team could accomplish is 3 championships in 6 years. This provides guidance on when the dynasty starts and ends (or when the opportunities to extend run out).

Therefore, since NDSU has won 9 championships in 13 opportunities (years), they have 5 more opportunities to extend their dynasty, if they don’t win another one by 2028, their dynasty ended in 2021…

Maybe that’s too long? Maybe it’s just a rule of 3, meaning you can’t go 3 years without winning one to continue the dynasty…?

    I could go either way…

In the link from the 2014 thread that Tony posted, it is suggested that a 3-peat is needed to start a dynasty. And I think heffray has it figured out how to continue that dynasty once it is started.

The term "dynasty" gets thrown around at the slightest hint of a three-peat these days and for good reason. Including Bohl, only a handful of coaches at any level of college football have accomplished that feat. Legendary Notre Dame coach Knute Rockne didn't get it done. Bear Bryant never did it either as a consensus champion. Saban came close, winning BCS titles with the Crimson Tide in 2010, 2012 and 2013, but the third has eluded him.

App State had a 3-peat. Georgia Southern won back to back championships three times - 85/86, 89/90, and 99/00.

3's not even close to a dynasty ... maybe 5 within 6 years would qualify or be close.

An argument could be made for 85-90 Georgia Southern: 4 titles in 6 years.
Even there, it might be debatable.

4 in 6 years is not debatable, that is a dynasty

So what’s your criteria, then? If NDSU’s 9 championships in the 11 years they accomplished them were divided evenly into 3s, then by the rationale you’ve provided, that’s not a dynasty?
