I don't know football like you guys/gals but aren't most coaches former football players?? They don't go to Coaching School, do they? Taking Grant Olson, after his playing time was done, didn't he go directly to being an assistant coach? Same with Tyler Roehl, granted high school coach at first. It seems they all have to be in the trenches of football.

Exactly!!! You learning playing and being in the trenches. Some people are better teachers than others but doesn't mean they don't know the game. Now if someone never played the game to me that raises a red flag. Good managers are the ones that played the game and became leaders and teachers.

Sometimes somebody with great athletic abilities can get by cutting corners on fundamentals. The great coaches love the sport but had to overcome their lack of abilities with smarts and techniques. That's what makes them great coaches. Think belichek, Saban, Klieman, and Bohl eh. There's exceptions to everything and you're not making the nfl without good fundamentals. But playing is different then coaching.

Coaching and playing are two different things, yeah, a good player could be a good coach - Dan Campbell. A great player could be an average to below average coach - Deion Sanders. A lacrosse player could be the GOAT of all NFL head coaches - Bill Belichek. The only way a player can become a great coach is if they have the desire to become a great coach and they work their asses off to get there. It's no different than any other job, you gotta work at it, you can't just show up and say, "hey I played in college".

Yep. One of the worst position coaches I had was at Iowa. He was a supposed all american back in his playing days at Oregon and he couldnt coach a horse to water in the desert.. Absolutely terrible. Couldnt teach technique to save his life. All he did was walk around yelling FULL BORE. Which meant full contact.

When you play football, you gotta like the taste of blood, And 50 percent of the time, it's your blood.

It is characteristic of the unlearned that they are forever proposing something which is old, and because it has recently come to their own attention, supposing it to be new.
