There is no reason to separate and this would appear to be an illegal restraint of trade to this non-lawyer economist. Just deregulate some more and get the same result.

This would be the death of college sports.

The argument they will make is anyone that wishes can enter and participate, given they find the money.
Its a massive barrier, but a purely economic one. They win (have already won) the good old fashion capitalistic way.

NCAA membership needs to fight this tooth and nail, but P4 seem to have a grip on power there too.

Behind the scenes suspect the P4 is blackmailing the NCAA and threatening to leave without this change.

The P4 CFP money and NCAA basketball tourney money is basically what funds the whole thing.
Not sure it can be stopped.

If P4 left, it's possible G5 football, FCS playoffs, and a ton of NCAA olympic sports all collapse.

Not if they limit participation to specific conferences.

Yeah, the actions of the NCAA and those within it have become a case study in political science and game theory. I suppose there’s always been a level of power grabbing and Machiavellianism, but starting with the downfall of the Big East it really seems to have escalated.

I don’t know what switched it on, if it was the onset of the CFP, the NCAA made a decision that a group of the big schools didn’t like and this is them taking their ball and going home, or what. It used to be that you couldn’t really forecast NCAA decisions because they would take into account tradition, the sustainability of the sport and student athlete well-being. Now it’s just a naked grab for money and power by all involved, which makes things a lot easier to predict.

For what it’s worth, the stance of the big schools does sound a lot like NDSU’s complaint about the watering down of D2. Of course the difference being that D1 is already nowhere near close to watered down and these changes will do nothing but accelerate the resource disparity.

To me, this means college sports interest/revenue/etc. has peaked. It’s my belief that the reason why the NCAA brings in so much revenue to their playoffs is because there are hundreds of other teams involved whose fans see their “peers” playing and want to watch. What this is talking about is creating a new minor league system, looking nothing like college athletics, and it is going to burn a lot of college fans out.

F it, let it happen. Maybe it will create a new "lower" division where College sports can be about the name on the front instead of the back.

Let it happen is what the P4 wants everyone to say. If you think poaching is bad now, just wait till this passes.

HOPE there is some massive pushback, but P4 seems to run the NCAA now. Charlie Baker is their mouthpiece.

Last time there were no roster limits, schools like Texas and OSU stockpiled extra players just so opponents couldn't have them. They'll take 200+ each. Thats why the limits were introduced.

I‘be thought a lot about whether or not this helps or harms good G5 schools and NDSU… the most obvious thing is that it would harm schools like us, because virtually every recruit will do literally anything to go to the P5 and never ever leave. You think there’s a gap between P5 and G5 now??? Lol, this would make the already large gap into an absolute black whole, and all players and programs on the wrong side of it will legitimately be known as D2. There will be a HUGE stigma to anyone outside of those groups and poaching will be vastly worse than it is today.

On the plus side, G5 and NDSU still can do NIL, which can even the playing field as we have seen this week! I also think a lot of great 3 stars will be kicked to the curb and fall down to G5 teams because now the money schools will almost never try and develop players and only go after stars because now they’re straight up purchasing those kids. Easier to justify buying a 4stsr recruit with a criminal record and bad attitude than buying a low 3 star who leads his youth group at church.

BUT. This really would make things interesting between G5 and FCS- very likely have their playoff, maybe even promotion relegation , who knows. Would be cool, but I think overall more harmful than good
    1. The FCS was the Best option for NDSU for a very long time.
    2. As a general rule- the FCS sucks at football and has proven that is not committed to football at all.
    3. It's time to go FBS

This feels like the NBA creating the D League...basically a direct pipeline to the NFL and not really amateur athletics any more.
